Robert Mueller is the most unknowable man in Washington Chicago Tribune - Duration: 1:47.
By now, it goes without saying that Mueller and his prosecutors run the tightest ship in Washington. No interviews, no leaks, no whispers, no jokes, no nuthin. In August, members of his team were spotted by the press waiting for a Shake Shack delivery at an Alexandria hotel during Paul Manaforts trial. Shake Shack, huh? joked a reporter. Peter Carr, Muellers spokesman, would not even confirm the order.
Mueller rarely ventures outside his temporary office in a nondescript federal building. Even in his most public role before this, as head of the FBI, Mueller only appeared in public when it was important to the bureau. Most of photos of him are from testimony to the Senate several years ago. His last speaking appearance announced before he was named special counsel was in May 2017 at the graduation of his granddaughter from a small boarding school in Massachusetts.
One of the things that I think is important in understanding him is understanding the perspective that he brings to this job, says Graff. If you got him in a moment of candor, he would say that this is no more than the third hardest job that he has ever had after in Vietnam and after being FBI director in the wake of 9/11. In that sense, the photo of him at the Apple Store is indicative of a lot: Hes just continuing to lead his life. His life has always been under the radar and non showy, and thats exactly how he has comported himself as special counsel.
Muellers private life is even more circumspect. It is possible, after following the bread crumbs of his biography, to determine his comings and goings. He lives in a gated community in Georgetown with his wife of 52 years, Ann. They have two daughters, Melissa and Cynthia, seen only when they attended his 2001 confirmation hearing as head of the FBI. The couple regularly attends services at an Episcopal church in downtown Washington. They both play golf, although Anns the better golfer of the two.
And they have a weekly dinner date, usually at their favorite Italian restaurant a few miles from their home. The Muellers have been regulars for years, typically sitting unnoticed behind the bar in the back of the room. How, in this age of smartphones and cameras, does Mueller pull that off? Slip in a side door? The owner, as did everyone contacted for this article, declined to comment.
In fact, virtually everyone within Muellers orbit refused to talk about him. Ill pass along your request, but she never returns calls about Mueller, explained the assistant of a lawyer who worked for him many years ago.
The people that he has surrounded himself with throughout his career are temperamentally very like him, explains Graff. And he has a good set of longtime friends in D.C. that he primarily socializes with. Hes someone who draws a pretty firm line between work and home in terms of socializing. Part of the answer is just that the people around him dont share the things that they do with him. And he has developed a series of places that he likes to go where I think that privacy is respected and theyre also not the trendiest restaurants on 14th Street where he would be recognized.
Even the press has been unwilling to cross Muellers invisible line. Salt Lake Tribune reporter Thomas Burr tweeted that he saw Mueller in June: Gotta love DC. Walk into restaurant, run into the special counsel. But Burr declined to say which restaurant, despite a flurry of responses to the tweet.
Some of this is respect for Mueller. Some of this is the fear of unintentionally providing a piece of information that could compromise the Russia investigation. And some of this is just fear for Mueller himself. Given the heated rhetoric surrounding Trump and a gunman who shot up Comet Ping Pong over the Pizzagate conspiracy theory friends and colleagues are reluctant to say anything that could harm him in any way.
Bob Mueller is doing exactly the right thing by simply focusing on this investigation and trying to determine the truth, says Panetta. I dont know what the final result is going to be, but I have a sense that whatever that final report shows that people are going to thank Bob Mueller for the way he handled this.
We asked Muellers spokesman if he had a response to . . . well, anything.
We appreciate your reaching out, replied Carr. But well decline comment at this time.
Mueller. Mueller. Mueller. Mueller. Mueller. Mueller. Everywhere, at any hour, its Mueller time.
Special counsel Robert Swan Mueller III is the second most famous man in Washington. Time Magazine just ranked him No. 3 on their Person of the Year list, after crusading journalists and President...

The Washington Post journalist was murdered inside Saudi Arabian embassy in Istanbul earlier this ye - Duration: 5:29.
The harrowing last words of slain journalist Jamal Khashoggi have been reveled. It has now emerged the Washington Post columnist recognised one of his alleged killers as he entered the Saudi Arabian embassy in Istanbul earlier this year
Maher Abdulaziz Mutreb, a former diplomat and intelligence officer working for the Saudi royal family, was known to Khashoggi from their time together at the Saudi embassy in London
Mutreb tells Khashoggi in the recording, which has yet to be released, "You are coming back," to which he replies, "You can't do that
People are waiting outside." In a transcript of disturbing audio recorded inside the consulate, Khashoggi can be heard saying "I can't breathe" as he was horrifically tortured inside the Saudi embassy
The sound of Khashoggi's body being dismembered by a saw can be heard, the Mirror reports
A voice is heard telling the alleged perpetrators: "If you don't like the noise, put your earphones in
" Read More Top news stories today The translated transcript of audio of Khashoggi's last moments, obtained by CNN, backs up claims the October 2 murder was not a botched interrogation, as the Saudis initially claimed
The new evidence also appears to tie Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman even closer to Khashoggi's brutal death
During the course of the gruesome scene, the source describes Khashoggi struggling against a group of people determined to kill him
"I can't breathe," Khashoggi says. "I can't breathe." "I can't breathe." Khashoggi was killed within seven minutes in a "premeditated" murder captured on tape, Turkey's Foreign Minister said last month
Mevlut Cavusoglu says he has listened to the "disgusting" recording allegedly capturing the Saudi journalist's brutal killing
He claims a forensic expert shows 'enjoyment' in the tape, as he tells other hitmen to listen to music while he cuts up Khashoggi's body
"It was premeditated murder," Cavusoglu told Germany's Sueddeutsche Zeitung newspaper, rather than a last resort
"It can be heard how the forensics expert instructs the others: they should listen to music while he cuts up the body
"One notices how he enjoys it." He added that the journalist was murdered "within seven minutes"
Saudi-Turkish relations have been strained by the killing of Khashoggi. After offering numerous contradictory explanations, Riyadh said the 60-year-old had been killed and his body dismembered when negotiations to persuade him to return to Saudi Arabia failed
A US resident and critic of the Saudi leadership, he had been filmed on CCTV arriving at the consulate on October 2 before vanishing
Turkey says he was killed at the consulate by a squad of 15 Saudi agents including a member of the Saudi Crown Prince's security team
However, Saudi Arabia has repeatedly said that Prince Mohammed bin Salman had no knowledge of the killing
In his interview, Cavusoglu said the crown prince had asked for a meeting with Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan and that there was currently no reason not to meet him
"Yes, he has asked Erdogan on the phone, whether they could meet in Buenos Aires," he told the newspaper
"Erdogan's answer was 'Let's see'." US President Donald Trump has said that Washington would remain a "steadfast partner" of Saudi Arabia, despite saying Prince Mohammed may have known about the plan to murder Khashoggi
Asked if he knew for sure who in Riyadh gave the order to kill Khashoggi, Cavusoglu said that the team would not have acted on its own, but could not say anything else without proof
The foreign minister added that Riyadh had offered to send identikit photos of local helpers who assisted in the cover-up
"Why identikit pictures? The Saudis know the names," he said. Following Khashoggi's disappearance, Turkey said it had recordings related to his killing, which it shared with Western allies
Cavusoglu said he had listened to the recordings.

Washington is now five days away from a partial government shutdown CNNPolitics
On Capitol Hill, Republicans and Democrats alike have made clear they dont want a shutdown, but lawmakers left Washington last week without a resolution in an ongoing standoff over funding for President Donald Trumps long promised border wall. The administration and congressional Democrats appeared to be no closer to reaching an agreement over the weekend.
White House senior adviser Stephen Miller on Sunday the administration would do "whatever is necessary to build the border wall," saying "if it comes to it, absolutely," when asked on CBSs "Face the Nation" if that would mean a partial shutdown. But Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer on NBCs "Meet the Press" on Sunday that the President is "not going to get the wall in any form," saying the votes arent there in the House or the Senate.
The window is narrow this week for Congress to take action. The Senate will be back on Monday, but the House of Representatives isnt expected to return until Wednesday evening. That leaves little time before funding runs out at midnight on Friday for a number of federal agencies, including the Department of Homeland Security, the Justice Department, and other parts of the government.
Trump wants dollar 5 billion in wall funding, but that number is a non starter for Democrats. Any spending legislation would need to pass with at least some Democratic votes since it would have to clear a 60 vote threshold in the Senate where Republicans only have a 51 seat majority.
Some congressional Republicans were talking openly at the end of last week about the possibility that lawmakers could punt the border fight by passing a temporary, stopgap spending measure. If Congress and the White House agree to a short term funding patch that could leave the issue for the new, incoming Congress to resolve in January.
Outgoing Republican Rep. Jeff Denham of California CNNs Kate Bolduan on Friday, "At this late in the game, I think a short term resolution is in order, something that would allow the next Congress to actually come in and negotiate a much larger, longer agreement."
"The question is ... will we kick the can until the day after Christmas, January 2nd or 3rd, or whatever?," Republican Sen. Richard Shelby, the chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, told CNN on Thursday. "I dont know. There has to be some sort of breakthrough."
So far, however, there has been no apparent breakthrough, and the threat of a partial shutdown moves closer to becoming a reality with each passing day.
The President defiantly said during a dramatic meeting last week with House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi and Schumer that he would take responsibility for a partial shutdown if one takes place.
"Ill tell you what, I am proud to shut down the government for border security, Chuck," Trump told the top Senate Democrat. "So, I will take the mantle. I will be the one to shut it down. Im not going to blame you for it."
If a shutdown takes place, it would be limited in scope. Congress has already funded roughly 75 percent of the federal government through September 2019, including the Pentagon as well as the Departments of Health and Human Services and Labor.
But that doesnt mean a partial shutdown that would start just days before Christmas wouldnt be disruptive.
In the event of a shutdown, some federal employees would be deemed essential and would continue to work, but their pay would be withheld until the shutdown is over.
Other federal employees would be placed on furlough, meaning they would effectively be put on a leave of absence without pay. Congress could move to order that furloughed employees be paid retroactively after the shutdown is over, but that is not guaranteed.

Michael Flynns business partner charged with illegally lobbying for Turkey The Washington Post
A former business partner of Michael Flynn is being charged with acting as an agent of a foreign government and conspiracy for attempting to get Turkish cleric Fethullah Gulen extradited from the United States.
Bijan Kian made his first appearance in Alexandria federal court Monday morning. According to the indictment, Kian conspired with Turkish businessman Ekim Alptekin to illegally lobby U.S. government officials and influence public opinion in the U.S. against Gulen.
Turkish businessman Ekim Alptekin is accused of directing and funding Kian and Flynns work, and then lying in U.S. filings about his role. He is charged with the same crimes as Kian, as well as making false statements, but he remains in Turkey.
Flynn, who served as President Trumps national security adviser during his first weeks in office, is identified in the indictment as Person A. Flynn is soon to be sentenced for lying to FBI agents as part of the special counsel investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 elections. Prosecutors , citing his substantial assistance.
The Turkish government blames Gulen, who is living in exile in Pennsylvania, for instigating a failed coup in 2016.
I just finished in Ankara after several meetings today with Turkish ministers, Alptekin wrote to Rafiekian and Flynn, according to the indictment. I have a green light to discuss confidentiality, budget, and the scope of the contract.
Kian was allowed out on a personal recognizance bond, with the only condition that he keep the probation office abreast of his movements. Defense attorney Robert Trout told a magistrate judge Kian was currently in the process of relocating from California to the D.C. area. Trout declined to comment after the proceeding.
