Georgetown is a great environment, and one of the key reasons is it's in Washington, D.C.

It allows me proximity to the policymakers. I am Sumit, I am a

professor of finance in the business school at Georgetown University. I have

actually got my undergrad, my master's and my Ph.D., everything at University of

Wisconsin-Milwaukee. So after I finished my undergraduate in computer science,

I was talking to my father, who was part of the U.N. and the World Bank, and he would

sit me down and he said it would be better if you do some econ degree where

you can actually make policy decisions that could impact the world. And that's

what appealed to me about going into economics. I think of myself when I go

teach my students in a very unique position. When I go to the classroom, I

tell them, look, I've spent six years at Bank of America, so I've learned banking

and done banking and actually understand banking, from the private sector, and then

I went to the Federal Reserve for six years, where I actually looked from a

regulatory point of view the role of banks. Some of the work I've done over

the years is about consumer behavior. I was very happy to see some of this work

included in the President's Economic Outlook and other policy documents. I'm

looking to pick projects that will have impact on the big canvas, that will have

policy implications and will get noticed by policymakers. And especially if you

can get into the President's Economic Outlook, that is the best place you can be.

The training to be inquisitive, the training to ask questions and the

training to be persistent about those questions is something that I learned

at UWM. I was very glad, I was very thankful to the department, to the

school, to the university for considering me to be in the group where I would be

receiving this Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award. For the people who

nominated me I would like to thank them from the bottom of my heart. I hope I'll

make you proud going forward as a recipient of this award.
