Hi, my name is Lauren Deipolyi and this is my research proposal for APN 610
My research question is do females with symptoms of candida overgrowth
experience more sugar addicted behavior than those with balanced gut bacteria?
Candida typically lives normally in the human body and in the intestinal tract
But it is a powerful and opportunistic fungal pathogen. If overgrown, Candida results in an imbalance in gut bacteria
Which negatively affects digestion and increases the risk of chronic illness and development of diseases.
Candida overgrowth is the most frequent healthcare care associated infection
Candida overgrowth is correlated to numerous negative health reactions
Gaining an understanding of the dietary habits of individuals who have
imbalanced intestinal flora can help nutrition and medical professionals spot this condition more quickly
pinpointing dietary patterns associated with candida overgrowth can provide us useful treatment procedures
My hypothesis is that individuals with symptoms of candida overgrowth will experience higher rates sugar cravings and
sugar addictive behaviors.
And my null hypothesis is that individuals was candida overgrowth
Will have no significant difference in the rate of sugar cravings and sugar addictive behaviors, and those who do don't have Candida
There's existing literature
that
correlates candida overgrowth to negative health reactions such as improper digestion
insulin resistance
development of chronic diseases and
obesity and
Studies have shown that severe cases of Candida infections can actually result in death
There's also a great deal of research that focuses on the pharmaceutical treatments of Candida infections and
research regarding candida overgrowth and imbalance in the gut bacteria
It's really limited to severe cases of infection in immunocompromised
individuals
and hospitalized patients
Studies have found that the dietary habits most associated with weight gain and obesity are the
high intake of simple sugars and starches
Research regarding sugar addiction gives us no definitive answer as to what the cause is
Existing research doesn't look at the connection between candida
overgrowth and how that can affect sugar and carbohydrate cravings and sugar addictive behavior
So seeking a link between candida overgrowth
To the presence of sugar cravings, I'm going to use an 8 question 5-point Likert scale survey
The survey will consist of four questions regarding sugar cravings and four questions involving Candida symptoms
The survey link will be posted to a Facebook account with
1,600 friends from around the country these are all random people who
were selected for the purpose of this and
Some have mutual friends and some don't and these are people from all around the world
But only female volunteers are going to be asked to complete the survey
the Likert style scale will be posted on surveyhero.com and
it's going to begin with this informed consent letter that I've listed below, and this letter basically use the
subjects of the study an idea of why they are participating in the study
and what the point of it is and who I am I am doing this research prospectus and
It is also outlining that I'm asking for female participants only.
It's also given a list of all of the different kinds of sugary foods and sweetened beverage
That could be included when I mentioned those things in the questions cause all of the survey questions regarding sugar cravings are
it's a very general statement of
sugary foods or sweetened beverages
So I list here what that might mean to give the people taking the survey a better idea of what these questions
Actually are regarding
This is the questions regarding the sugar addictive behavior, which I had mentioned previously
The list of foods and
also here note that I wrote in the last six months on every question and that's going to give the subjects and the
Study participants a better idea of exactly when with the time frame is here that I'm asking them about some of these behaviors
And as you can see I have this likert style scale and it ranges from never, not frequently,
Occasionally, very frequently, and always and all the questions have that exact
same answer option
And here are the questions regarding candida overgrowth symptoms and
Again, it has the same scale from never to always and again it also
Discusses the last six months so it's asking these people to just think at the last six months of their lives
and look at some of their own symptoms and
There is the first question
regarding yeast infection and that's kind of the reason why we're specifically asking women is they'll have a better idea of
Whether or not they've actually experienced that then a man does
So my limitations really are that these individuals being surveyed they're not a full representation of the entire population
Obviously because they're all Facebook users, and they'll have internet access and they're all able to
Take the survey which means they have the time to be on the computer
And that's going to be considered when analyzing the data. There's also a risk of self misdiagnosis
but really the survey questions are worded as directly as possible to try to avoid this and
as I mentioned that's getting those time frames and really giving the specifics of what I meant in the informed consent letter and
That's why we're gonna have female participants
answer
These questions because they're more equipped to diagnose the candida related question regarding yeast infection, as I had mentioned
The data collected is going to be put into a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet
and the sum of the for Candida related questions will be added and averaged to get the mean for each participant and
Then the sum of the for sugar related questions will be added together and averaged, and I show that down here in this
Excel spreadsheet, and this is just obviously a sample and here is the
The formula for average really easy, and it kind of gives me the opportunity to group the first four questions that are regarding
sugar and the second four questions, which are regarding Candida and
that way
We can find out with the central tendency is
because we're going to do a mean comparison of questions 1 through 4 against questions 5 through 8 and
the standard deviation will be calculated to test the variability and the standard error will be determined to measure the precision of the results and
the standard deviation will also be squared to find the variance and
We'll be using the Spearman's rank test to demonstrate the degree of relationship between the two ordinal data sets and again
That's those two data sets are the answers from one to four and the answers from five to eight for each study participant
And basically the analysis of this data it's going to display whether or not
there is a strong relationship between symptoms of candida overgrowth and sugar addictive behavior
And if there is a strong relationship determined then we will be able to accept my research hypothesis
Thank you very much for listening, and I hope you have a great day
