Minnesota Public Radio Drops Garrison Keillor Over Allegations of Improper Conduct - Duration: 7:37.Minnesota Public Radio Drops Garrison Keillor Over Allegations of Improper Conduct
Minnesota Public Radio said Wednesday that it was severing all business ties with Garrison Keillor, the creator and retired host of "A Prairie Home Companion," after allegations of "inappropriate behavior with an individual who worked with him.
Over four decades, Mr Keillor, 75, had created a financial juggernaut for the radio network with his weekly broadcast of songs, skits and tales of his fictional hometown Lake Wobegon, along with related books, recordings and other products.
In a statement he provided to The New York Times, Mr Keillor said, "I've been fired over a story that I think is more interesting and more complicated than the version MPR heard.
Effective immediately, MPR said, it will no longer distribute and broadcast Mr Keillor's remaining programs, "The Writer's Almanac" and "The Best of A Prairie Home Companion Hosted by Garrison Keillor.
It will also change the name of American Public Media's current incarnation of the show, which Chris Thile, a songwriter and mandolinist, took over in October 2016, after Mr Keillor stepped down.
Jon McTaggart, the president of Minnesota Public Radio, said in a statement that "all of us in the MPR community are saddened by these circumstances.
He added: "While we appreciate the contributions Garrison has made to M.
, and all of public radio, we believe this decision is the right thing to do and is necessary to continue to earn the trust of our audiences, employees and supporters of our public service.
" The network did not elaborate on what it called Mr Keillor's "inappropriate behavior.
Later on Wednesday, The Star Tribune of Minneapolis published an email from Mr Keillor in response to a reporter's questions, giving his version of an encounter with an unidentified woman.
"I put my hand on a woman's bare back," he wrote. "I meant to pat her back after she told me about her unhappiness and her shirt was open and my hand went up it about six inches.
I sent her an email of apology later and she replied that she had forgiven me and not to think about it.".
Mr Keillor claimed that they continued to be friends "right up until her lawyer called.
He insisted his discomfort with physical affection was common knowledge, adding, "If I had a dollar for every woman who asked to take a selfie with me and who slipped an arm around me and let it drift down below the beltline, I'd have at least a hundred dollars.
Mr Keillor is one of many public figures to face consequences after allegations of sexual misconduct in recent weeks.
Indeed, just a day earlier, he had come to the defense of his friend and fellow Minnesotan, Senator Al Franken, who is fighting for his political life in the face of accusations of improprieties from four women.
In an op-ed for The Washington Post published on Tuesday evening, Mr Keillor said calls for the senator's resignation were "pure absurdity" and dismissed a photograph of the Democrat with his hands on a woman's chest as something "in a spirit of low comedy.
The fallout with the network came as Mr Keillor was slowly receding from the public stage, though he has still been touring, with appearances around the Northeast this week. On Wednesday, he canceled a performance scheduled that night in Pittsfield, Mass.
He originally came up with the idea for his own Americana variety programin 1974 after he traveled to Nashville to write about the Grand Ole Opry for The New Yorker.
"A Prairie Home Companion" became a radio institution, peaking at 4. 1 million weekly listeners a decade before he retired, with lucrative live performances and merchandise that included recordings, books and clothes.
Mr Keillor sang, performed in skits with recurring characters like Guy Noir and ended each show with a monologue about Lake Wobegon, "where all the women are strong, all the men are good looking and all the children are above-average.
Famous artists who appeared on his stage included Emmylou Harris, Chet Atkins, Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, Taj Mahal, Bonnie Raitt, Willie Nelson, Keb' Mo' and Wilco. He was credited with shaping the early profile of public radio.
"'Prairie Home Companion' came on the scene just as public radio was trying to figure out what its identity was," Ira Glass, the host of "This American Life," told The New York Times last year.
"The fact that here was such a visibly weird, funny, idiosyncratic show opened up the space of other weird, idiosyncratic shows, like 'Car Talk,' and our show.".
Mr Keillor, in his statement on Wednesday, which he also published on his website, said he was "deeply grateful" for all the years appearing on the radio and touring the country.
"It's some sort of poetic irony to be knocked off the air by a story, having told so many of them myself, but I'm 75 and don't have any interest in arguing about this," he said.
"And I cannot in conscience bring danger to a great organization I've worked hard for since 1969.".
He also apologized to "all the poets whose work I won't be reading on the radio and sorry for the people who will lose work on account of this.

Donald Trump drops another bomb on the NFL – 'the American public is fed up…' - Duration: 4:16.Donald Trump drops another bomb on the NFL – 'the American public is fed up…'
President Donald Trump is at it again with his criticism of the NFL on Twitter.
Trump has called out the league several times this year for not taking action against players who refuse to stand for the national anthem.
Tuesday, he said the protests are now affecting attendance at NFL games.
At least 24 players kneeling this weekend at NFL stadiums that are now having a very hard time filling up, Trump wrote Tuesday on Twitter.
The American public is fed up with the disrespect the NFL is paying to our country, our flag and our national anthem. Weak and out of control!.
While figures show the leagues attendance is actually up slightly from last season — 69,296 per game this year compared to 68,914 last year — those figures represent tickets sold for each game.
They dont count the actual number of fans in the seats at a game.
In other words, season-ticket holders who dont use their tickets either because theyre fed up with the performance of their favorite team and/or theyre fed up with athletes protesting the anthem are still being counted as being at the game.
Since 2005, the league determines game attendance as tickets distributed as opposed to fans in attendance.
The protests by NFL players reached as high as 200 this season after Trump said at a rally in late September, Wouldnt you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say, Get that son of a b— off the field right now!.
The protests have been cited as one of the factors behind the leagues declining television ratings and merchandise sales, as angry fans have called for boycotts against the NFL and its sponsors.
Meanwhile, other fans who support the anthem protests have also tuned out the NFL because they believe Colin Kaepernick,.
who launched the anthem protests last season, has been blackballed by the league and its owners for his stance on racial inequality and police brutality.
Trump has called for commissioner Roger Goodell to stand up to the players, but so far, the commissioner has done nothing to inspire players to stop protesting.
When will the highly paid commissioner finally get tough and smart? Trump said in a tweet last week.
This issue is killing your league!. Trump has tweeted about the NFL four times in the last eight days.
The anthem protests havent generated much media attention in recent weeks, as the networks broadcasting the games have stopped reporting on which players have knelt prior to games.
But that hasnt stopped the presidents anger with the issue.

SNL has removed public access to its controversial Safelight sketch|K CHANNEL - Duration: 1:46.SNL has removed public access to its controversial Safelight sketch
Saturday Night Live has quietly taken steps to erase its controversial Safelite AutoGlass parody commercial from public view, replacing it with a previously-cut sketch in episode repeats and removing clips entirely from online platforms.
The sketch, which starred Beck Bennett as a Safelite technician who uses his job fixing windshields to try and hook up with a teenage girl, was closely modeled on the repair companys actual advertisements, which feature real technicians as they address viewers.
It mentioned actual services and products offered by Safelite and was filmed in an attempt to capture the company commercials tone, only with a creepy and comic infusion.
Safelite strongly disapproved of the sketch via Twitter the day after the episode, which was hosted by Gal Gadot, first aired in early October. "Thanks for the skit," the tweet began.
"Although we can take a joke, this one was a step too far. Our techs are our heroes. #notcool." Subsequent comments on the companys official Twitter feed called the sketch disappointing..
The spoof commercial is no longer available on YouTube or Hulu, where SNL typically posts all of its sketches that make it to air, and was entirely absent from NBCs reairing of the Gal Gadot-hosted episode on Saturday night, as Decider noted.
In the repeat, the sketch was replaced with The Last Fry, a rap video featuring Bennett and Kyle Mooney, in which Gadot eats their last french fry while an apocalypse builds in terror around them.
The Last Fry, which did not make it to original air, is currently available on YouTube. NBC did not immediately reply to a request for comment.
In a statement to Decider, Safelite reiterated its disappointment with how [the sketch] negatively portrayed technicians, and confirmed that while the content has been removed from public access, the company was not provided a reason to explain why.

George Belliveau - Public Salon: - Duration: 9:51.Our next guest is a professor of theater at UBC
But he uses theater as a tool for research and social change. He raises awareness of veterans
Taken from Canada
Dropped into brutal environments, then returned to their homes here in Canada
Often given no support to make sense of their experiences
And I would like to acknowledge a number of veterans who are with us here today?
We thank our next guests for using theatre to teach us and them
New ways of understanding ourselves and the world we live in please welcome George Beliveau
Theatre is often defined as a place to see to hear
to feel
to witness
to question
And to safely witness the consequences of human behavior, and I'd like to add that theater is a place where we come together
to share humanity
For the last three years I've had the privilege of working on a collaborative project with
military veterans and counselors and
In that project we produced a play called contact unload which toured extensively in Canada in the UK
But what I wanted to share tonight is
The the impact that that play and the creation of that work
Working with these veterans has had on me as an artist as a researcher
but most importantly on me as a human being
As a father of two girls a husband a
Son a brother and most recently working with these military veterans
I've been wondering what it means to be a man
What does it mean to be a decent man in?
This day and age who are models I?
Mean who are your models?
For the first two decades of my life, I identify myself as a hockey player in the dressing room
I was surrounded by a hyper masculinity and on the ice
It was about being tough and strong in a fast physical game with other men
I mean, I dreamed of being a goalie in the NHL
I wanted to be Ken Dryden because he was an athlete and a scholar
Well, I didn't make it to the NHL
but I did manage to play at the university level where I traveled from hockey to theater dressing room as
I majored in acting at Dalhousie University
At the age of 18 as I made my way between those two
drastically different worlds I
came to realize that there was a spectrum of men and that performing one's masculinity is part of the continuum I
Mean I enjoyed the camaraderie in the Brotherhood of my hockey teammates
But with my male acting friends I felt more alive
I mean I was exploring parts of myself that that I never knew existed
So in my second year university I decided to hang up my hockey gear and commit myself. Fully to theatre
Much to my father's surprise
My brother Don though he got it because at that point in his life
He was moving away from weightlifting and playing football and taking a new pathway by climbing in the mountains
from the Canadian Rockies to the Himalayas, but dad
well
You see to be a man is to play hockey
To be a man is to be tough and strong and reserved an emotion to be a man is not to
open oneself up and be vulnerable in front of others I
Now work with military veterans men in particular
Men, who were deployed overseas as peacekeepers
These men who risked their lives for the well-being of others represent for many of us the epitome of being a man
In my three years of working with these men though
I've realized the various layers and levels of what it means to be a man and
Being a man goes much deeper than the bravado the uniform and physical strength
Because these men I work with have seen and experienced things that
Hopefully many of us will never encounter. I mean imagine I
having to decide
whether or not to shoot a
Young Afghan boy who's coming towards your compound
Because he might be carrying explosive devices in his backpack
While holding on to your your mates shrapnel filled body as he takes in his last breath
These men I work with have journeyed from war zones to counseling support and now to the theater
where they perform their lived experiences in our play called contact unload and in the play they share their stories of loss of
survivor's guilt
But they also bring to life the camaraderie the Brotherhood as they come together to heal to cope and to reclaim
parts of their souls
Souls that were fractured or for some of them left overseas?
As one of the vets says you got to die when you join, so you don't fear dying when you're there
Well, it's not easy when you come back to try to reclaim your life
But nothing's the same here, nothing makes sense when I was there. I was something when I'm here
I'm just dead inside
Our play
at the very beginning
Shows these hyper masculine hyper masculine men initially defying any kind of support. Hey listen
I'm fucked up, but I'm not that fucked up or
They're guys. That are way worse than I am
but gradually
with persistent persuasion from other vets they step forward
and they seek professional help in an attempt to literally for some of them save their lives and
Here I am as their director and co actor in the play, and I'm witnessing this for 25 shows and
I'm in awe of
their courage their courage to be vulnerable
their courage to open themselves up and share these deeply personal injuries and
Then painfully work at stitching them the pieces back together so that they could live more fully
So what does it mean to be a man?
Well I never served in the military
So what did I really know about their struggles?
I mean the only weapon I've ever held is a wooden sword in a Shakespearean battle scene
or hockey stick
But something something inside me was happening as I watched them firsthand rebuild themselves in the company of their brothers
I was wrestling with my own identity
As a father as a son
My father
He grew up on a farm in eastern, Canada. He was a hockey player a
Weightlifter a boxer at age 18 my dad could benchpress nearly 300 pounds. That's twice my weight
My dad is 74 now when we move furniture dad. He still takes the heavy end
But when my dad was 49 the age, I'm now
He lost a son
my brother dawn in a tragic mountain climbing accident I
Was 27 at the time and I had no idea how to grieve for my only brother a best friend
but my dad
He showed me another way to be strong
he stood beside me and
With compassion we grieved and we cried together
releasing sharing the burden of our loss
Never alone never alone. That's the model that the veterans I work with use. I've got your back in the battlefield and at home
Well my dad
He saw the production of contact unload and like many other men and women in the audience the night
He was there his eyes were filled with tears
As he watched these six veterans stand side by side
hugging singing lean on me
Well men do cry and they laugh in fact we have the spectrum of emotions available at our
disposal
We just need the courage to act upon and release these emotions
So what does it mean to be a man?
Well for me it means being true to myself and to those around me
Thank you
