My name is Thomas Amsler
and this is the book that was published
together with three of my architectural colleagues
in Stuttgart, Germany, in 1959.
I remember from hiking with my parents
in Ticino
that we came upon this village, Corippo.
I thought that would be a wonderful chance
to document a historic village.
It was very quiet because, even then, there were
very few people.
As we started drawing, they woud observe us.
They would say, "Come to our house and draw that".
The village is completely built out of stone:
walls, roofs and interior partitions.
Very few villages are that compact,
and that comprised of a mass of houses
with little passages between them.
It makes it a big pile of stones hanging on the mountains.
A few years after we were there to draw,
we came back with a German TV crew,
because they saw the book that we had published in '59,
a book with photos, text and stories.
We printed 2,000 copies
and they were gone in a year or two.
Now the mayor is the only one working
in a village of just 14 permanent residents.
Many of these traditional stone houses stand empty.
A foundation set on preserving Corippo
plans to turn some of the empty houses into hotel rooms.
It's a good idea to preserve the village
and have control over its future.
But there's also a negative side when
everything has to be changed
to modern accommodation.
I don't know the details,
but it's thought to be more of an Eco hotel,
a little rustic.
But people are not gonna put up with
rustic houses, if they don't get a shower.
