News on Youtube Feb 9 2018

Today we are headed to Des Moines to the Iowa Public Health Day on the Hill

and it's me and some of our fellow students here from the College of Public

Health. I think what I'm most excited about is meeting with other public

health professionals from out the state and learning about what they're

doing in their communities to help benefit the state as a whole.

It was a great day, this was my first time at this event. I was really surprised to see how

busy the Capitol was. There was a lot of buzz throughout all the floors that we

were on and you can tell it was a busy day for everyone there. I think the

unique thing about it was it was an environment that was a very open playing

field. I feel as though we were just students we could approach anyone there,

and everyone was happy to see us, and engaging conversations, that was a really

fun feature of the day. So we got a lot of face time actually with Dave

Jacoby who is a representative here in Johnson County. We asked some

questions about things that we were interested in, whether it was Medicaid, or

mental health status here in the state, and just kind of got his thoughts on

some of the initiatives that are going through the legislature right now.

Public health can take people in a lot of different directions there's so many

careers out there in public health and the one kind of common thing is that

policy affects all those areas of public health, whether you're in administration,

or epi, or community and behavioral health and so seeing how the process

works is really great and I now feel very comfortable if I wanted to reach

out to any of the people I met with today, that I could send them an email or

give them a call and I think that's really important and something that not

everyone has the opportunity to do.

The Real Reason Kate Middleton Never Takes Off Her Coat In Public - Duration: 1:39.

Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, is the definition of style.

"Thank you so much."

From modest day dresses to glamorous gowns, the 36-year-old is always on top of her fashion

game, but there's one wardrobe habit that's left some fans puzzled — her coats.

Middleton wears these jackets even when she's indoors, and, honestly, it's a bit like wearing

sunglasses at night.

The fashion oddity caught followers' attention when Middleton and her husband, Prince William,

met with Norway's Prince Haakon and Princess Mette-Marit in early February 2018.

While sitting on sofas for a lunchtime conference, Middleton kept her coat on.

And, while Norway is likely freezing, it's doubtful that a winter jacket was necessary

inside, especially given that William only wore a button-down shirt and sweater.

However, there's a specific reason for Middleton's outfit choice, and it has nothing to do with

temperature.

According to Ok!, royal dress code dictates that women should not take off their coats

while in public.

Apparently, it's considered "unladylike."

Since there were photographers present for her meeting with Norway's prince and princess,

poor Middleton had to suffer through a presumably stuffy room without removing her peacoat.

Unfortunately for the Duchess, it's not the first rule of fashion she's had to adopt since

joining the royal family.

As noted by StyleCaster, Queen Elizabeth II has also outlawed both colored nail polish

and jeans — at least for public events.

Now, will future royal Meghan Markle be able to stick to the Queen's list of rules?

"I can't say that I know."

Ch 1: Public Speaking (Part 1 of 6) - Duration: 4:07.

Hello and welcome to the lecture for Chapter 1: Why Public Speaking Matters Today.

In this chapter, we are going to be talking about public speaking as a general idea,

as this is really the first lecture of this class.

So we're going to be talking about why public speaking still matters here in the 21st century

and what public speaking looks like in an everyday setting as well as some of

the benefits that you can get from a public speaking class, aside from earning a few GE units.

So, when it comes right down to it,

a lot of communication, or a lot of things in the area of communication,

seem to be changing very very quickly.

We no longer send letters, for example we text each other instead,

but even with all of these changes in the way that we communicate with one another,

public speaking is one of those things that continues to be relevant

even though the actions that we take when we are communicating with one another

are changing so rapidly.

So let's talk about public speaking in the 21st century.

So when we're talking about public speaking it's important to always always always

define our terms. So public speaking, for the purposes of this class,

is the process of designing and delivering a message to an audience.

Now when you are giving a public speech it's important to understand not only

who your audience is but also what your own speaking goals are,

and you have to choose elements of the speech that are going to

engage your audience with the topic, you have to learn how to deliver your message skillfully,

and hopefully we are going to be learning all of those skills as this class progresses.

So, we are going to learn how to plan and organize our material and then present that revised

material to an audience to deliver the most effective speech that we possibly can.

Because, public speaking isn't something that we can

completely avoid unfortunately, in our everyday lives.

Most of us are probably going to end up in situations where we have to give a public speech

where we are asked to give a speech. So for example, let's say that you are a

member of a wedding party. Let's say that you are the maid of honor or the best man at a wedding.

It's expected that you give a speech about the bride or groom at that wedding,

so public speaking is something that happens in our everyday life,

so it's really really important that we understand how public speaking works

and how to be the most effective speakers that we can.

So that's one of the reasons that public speaking is so important

because we are constantly given these opportunities to speak in public and so

we want to make sure that we can be the most effective speakers that we can be.

But in addition to that, every single day we are constantly bombarded by messages.

Whether that is a lecture that is given by a teacher or if it's a dialogue

that's given in a play or a monologue or if it's something on a television show

or even a commercial, right? We are constantly surrounded by messages both

good and bad and because we live in a world that's so filled with content,

we have to figure out how to communicate with each other in a way that is the

most accessible to everyone involved that communicates that information as

clearly as possible. So that's what this class does:

it allows us to be able to communicate information in the most clear manner that we can.

This week on DPS News Now…

It's national signing day – when student athletes across the country (and in Denver

Public Schools) sign college letters of intent to both attend, and play college sports.

"My number one supports."

Macey Murray was one of three Thomas Jefferson High School seniors celebrated at this event.

"I'm very grateful, because Iknow a lot of people don't have that.

So I was very grateful for them to be there for me."

DGS Office of Public Affairs on Strategic Planning 2016 - Duration: 2:32.

Good afternoon, I'm Brian Ferguson with the DGS Office of Public Affairs. Sorry

I couldn't join you today but we're excited to talk about the initiatives

that were undertaking in 2016. I like to start by commending all the divisions

and offices who presented today. The goals we are undertaking as a department

are impressive. In the Office of Public Affairs it is our goal to provide tools

and services that divisions offices can use to increase their communication with

our customers. That being said, the Office of Public Affairs has its own strategic

initiatives for 2016 which we hope will provide needed tools for our divisions

and offices to do the important work of the business of government. First and

foremost, in the age of the Internet, the first place customers go to learn about

a department or a service is the web. In 2016 we're going to be launching a major

revamp of our public facing website with our partners in DGS's IT division, we're in

the process of sending out to bid our website and our hope is to provide a new

more customer friendly content management system where we have tools

that are easy for our customers to use, and our business lines are more easier

to activate. Our second initiative is to relaunch our public facing blog. The

story of who we are as people at DGS and the story of our customers is something

that we'd like to tell in 2016. We believe that we've done an excellent job

building services and delivery options that improve DGS's business lines. What

we look forward to doing, is pushing these services out to our customers and

creating a better story of who we are as a department. Our third goal is to hold a

number of media worthy events throughout the state that promote the efforts of

DGS to provide excellence in the business of government. We'd like to tell

the story of who we are as a department in our new initiatives whether it be

sustainability, real estate, procurement or school construction. We're

undertaking in many initiatives that we think are worthy a public consideration

and could be better promoted. Thank you and we look forward to working with all our

divisions and offices to undertake these strategic initiatives on behalf of DGS.

Public Works TV : EP.0014 - We ♥ SF - Duration: 10:10.

Hello and welcome to Public Works TV

I'm Ramses Alvarez

I'm Jordyn Aquino

I'm Philip Singh

I'm Carlo Alfonso

I'm Jennifer Brooks

I'm Miguel Hernandez

I'm Natasha Reed

Today, we're your hosts.

I'll be sharing

My

My

My

My

My

My

My

favorite San Francisco spot

with you.

Before we get started let's take a look back at our past week this week.

This week at Public Works improvements continued along Hayes Street. Did you know that 2018

marks the sixth year of the Stockton Street Sidewalk Expansion Program?

This holiday initiative alleviates sidewalk congestion and allows businesses to

better showcase their merchandise through the Lunar New Year festivities.

Through the clean total swap-out Recology is helping to keep Chinatown

looking fresh by replacing blighted toters with newly polished containers.

Like we always say, it's all in the details.

And this week we were proud to receive a

well-being at work award for employee wellness initiatives.

I love my bike.

It's with me when I'm traveling between meetings, grabbing a quick bite to eat or

running an errand during my lunch. Often times I'm a bit busy at home so

having an easy way to occasionally run a lunch errand is key.

If I'm heading South, Valencia Street is my go-to route. Over the past decade this

corridor has gone through a series of transformations which has greatly

improved the experience for pedestrians and cyclists alike.

My favorite improvement is a bicycle Green Wave which times the traffic signal so I can

travel at a comfortable speed and encounter fewer red lights. This gives me

a great relaxing cycling experience and allows me to take in the sights and

sounds of this vibrant corridor, it also has a traffic calming effect which

greatly increases safety for all users.

Public Works continues to collaborate

with multiple City agencies such as the Planning Department the Health

Department and MTA to develop safer streets for all. It's our Vision Zero

plan. As an enthusiastic cyclist improvements like these helped me feel

safer when traveling through our city.

If you keep riding to the end of the corridor you'll find the Mission Valencia Green Gateway.

With the rainy season underway here in the city these gardens offer a unique way of managing stormwater to

help keep runoff from overwhelming San Francisco's aging stormwater system.

While landscape architect's carefully selected species

to handle the wet and dry seasons making it a beautiful sight to see.

Hello from Jefferson Street in Fisherman's Wharf -- one of San Francisco's internationally

known tourist destinations. As a landscape architect at Public Works I'm

particularly excited to be reporting from the Jefferson Streetscape

Improvement Project, an exemplary work of landscape architecture in San Francisco.

It's one of my favorite landscape projects in the city because it

demonstrates how landscape design can transform the public realm for the

better. What you see here is the result of a community driven process and a

coordinated effort among the public, local merchants and business owners, the

Fisherman's Wharf Community Benefit District, City Planning,

the SF MTA and Public Works and is just the first phase of the Fisherman's Wharf

public realm plan. The most apparent improvements are the conversion of

Jefferson Street from a one-way to a two-way route. The roadway was also

reduced from four lanes to two and the sidewalk was widened making the popular

corridor safer and more inviting for people who walk and bike.

Next time you're out here though, you'll notice there's more than just that.

The Jefferson Streetscape design relies on the breadth of the landscape medium,

paving materials, topography, lighting, plants and spatial organization to

achieve accessibility to pedestrians along the entire length of Jefferson

Street. This includes improved intersections, new pedestrian plazas on

the street corners, pedestrian scale lighting, bike parking, public seating and

more. The resulting design celebrates the history of the wharf and San Francisco's

roots along the waterfront while creating a streetscape that embraces

today's walkable and bikable city. Most exciting, the project has proven to be

such a success that phase two is underway. So come and check it out for

yourself!

Hello from Dolores Park. The park is bound by 18th Street on the

North, 20th Street on the South, Dolores Street on the East and Church

Street on the West. Mission Dolores Park is one of my favorite spots because it

provides an urban oasis in an otherwise densely packed neighborhood.

Many neighbors consider this their backyard -- it's a place for children of

all ages, those who have pets, those who play sports, those who want to hang with

friends or those who just want to lay in the sun. People from in and out of San

Francisco come together to enjoy this green space. San Francisco Public Works

helped shape the final design of this project. The reimagined park now is home

to six tennis courts, a multi-use court, a basketball court, a sports field, the

Helen Diller playground, two off-leash dog areas, improved irrigation and public

restrooms and of course the expansive lawns.

If you haven't already, come experience the Dolores Park for yourself.

Sunset Boulevard starts at Lake Merced and ends at Golden Gate Park. The boulevard is

lined with gorgeous tree canopies and is great for runners, walkers, cyclists and

serves as a scenic road for people who drive. Public Works tree and landscape

crews take great pride in caring for this area. District 4 Supervisor Katie

Tang, who represents the Sunset District, wanted to make Sunset Boulevard even

more inviting and worked with Public Works to install outdoor exercise

equipment along the green-way. Her goal encouraged the community to explore

Sunset Boulevard and engage in healthy physical activity. As a resident of the

Outer Sunset, the fitness equipment along Sunset Boulevard allows me an easy

opportunity to exercise outdoors and it's really fun!

As a runner I have always appreciated San Francisco's nature and I'm happy to

have the advantage of working out even while waiting for stoplights using our

community's new outdoor fitness equipment. Come try it out for yourself.

Oh hey, didn't see you there. Don't mind me I'm just here at my favorite San

Francisco spot: Lilac Alley. When I think about San Francisco I think about a city

that's deeply rooted in arts and culture. San Francisco has evolved to be such an

iconic place in the world because different communities use arts and

culture as a base for making San Francisco home. Lilac Alley is a two-block

stretch in the Mission District containing an array of murals that

showcase the talent of local artists. Whether it's something silly, iconic,

political or cultural the alley is a feast for your eyes and can be used as

the perfect spot for a very likeable selfie.

Through our Adopt a Street and Graffiti Watch programs community members can partner with Public Works to

make sure the dynamic alley is in its best shape for neighbors and visitors.

and that the murals maintain their vibrancy and aren't blighted by graffiti vandals.

Growing up here in San Francisco gave me the opportunity to explore many

cool and unusual spots that only San Francisco has to offer.

One of my favorite spots is the Palace of Fine Arts

in the Marina District. This architectural jewel was constructed in

1915 as part of the Panama Pacific International Exposition.

One of the showpiece structures was the Palace of Fine Arts

designed by architect Bernard R. Maybach who was inspired by Roman ruins.

After the exposition, most of the buildings were torn down but San Franciscans loved

the magical palace so much they decided to keep it. Today, people come from all

over the world to visit this magnificent attraction -- the ornate rotunda and serene

pond make it the ideal location to host weddings and events. I personally enjoy

walking around the palace and taking in its inherent beauty and tranquility.

Public Works led a multi-phase improvement project completed in 2009

that included seismic upgrades restoration, of walkways and other

upgrades to preserve the history and splendor of the Palace of Fine Arts.

If you haven't already, come check it out!

The Esmeralda Slide has been a popular spot for generations of San Franciscans.

The park opened in 1979 and was

developed by local artists, neighborhood activists and Public Works employees.

You can find the park tucked away on Esmeralda Avenue in Bernal Heights.

The park is cared for by a group of Street Park volunteers.

What makes this place so special? Side-by-side, 40-foot slides that can

bring a smile to both children and adults.

As one of those kids who was

lucky enough to have grown up in San Francisco, it's been a very special place

to me for a long time. I'm sure once you ride the slides you'll know why.

It's important to remember that these parks are maintained by neighbors.

They're gems of San Francisco and we want them to keep shining

so pack it in, pack it out and do your part to clean up.

We hope you enjoyed exploring the city with us.

Do you have a favorite public space that many folks may not know about?

Please share it with us in the comments below.

Until next time...

thanks for joining us in Public Works TV.

I am Marlena Cohen.

I keep SF curious. I am Public Works.

Together we are Public Works.
