What makes Ithaca College what it is
are the thousands of unique relationships
that are built here.
Some of the most meaningful relationships that I have.
I met my wife here at Ithaca.
The person sitting next to me ended up being my husband.
Your professor it is like your friend, too.
People here are so great.
Everyone's so welcoming.
Some amazing person that I wish to this day I
knew exactly who it was so I could thank them
because she changed my life.
Ithaca is unique in that sense.

Mark really wanted to be dating me
and I really didn't want to be dating anyone.
That's not true.
I didn't say I didn't like you.
I said I wasn't ready to be dating.
You didn't think you were ready until I bugged you enough
and then you were ready, right?
I remember the night that we had our first real kiss
on that bench at the chapel pond.
There was, like, heat lightning in the sky,
so there was something electric in the air.
See, I don't remember that.
What I remember most about my experience with Deb
in her office is her, one, knowing-- she
could hear my squeal from, like, way down the hallway
so she knew I was coming.
She tried to close her door but I would just walk past.
I would open her door.
I'm like, Deb, don't hide from me.
I don't know why he gravitated to my office.
To be honest with you, he was my most frustrating and my most
outstanding student all in one.
Jennifer was one of my top students of all time
and I've been here since 1988.
And it was pretty clear when I first met her.
Growing up, I struggled a little bit with confidence
and I didn't believe in myself as much
as I should have despite what I could see in front of me.
You know, I saw the dedication.
I saw the passion.
He was my mentor.
I had a couple of relationships with Coach Butterfield.
He was my football coach.
I just respected him so much because he did it right,
he did it with class, and we won.
Years and years later.
We were in Ithaca for a wedding of some friends that
went to IC.
And it just seemed like this is the place to do it.
He took us down to the bench and he proposed.
And even though I felt like I knew it was coming,
I was still shaking and excited.
She said yes so that was also a positive.
I got the opportunity to come back and work
with him for 10 years.
He called me and said, would you be interested as an assistant?
So I say, I don't think I even responded.
I just hung up and went to Ithaca.
And here he was.
Here's my head coach who I played for.
He said, Mark, you want to go have a beer?
And I go, whoa.
It's wonderful to have a mentor-mentee relationship grow
into that place where you're both professionals.
Being back here in Ithaca and being
a leader within the community now,
too, we have a lot even more in common.
And then when Coach Butterfield retired,
I had the opportunity to become the head football coach.
Yeah, that was a great game for us.
And then stay here for 23 years simply
because I love my alma mater and also
to continue the legacy of Ithaca college football--
what Jim Butterfield had built and how he built it.
Knowing she's here not only makes that kind
of closure to my career better and hoping
her carrying that torch forward and you've
come full circle now.
It's full circle.
So we're bonding even more through
not just the administrative-student
relationship but just being two professionals
in the same space.
I'm now learning from him.
When maybe I was his advisor, he was learning from me.
One of the key factors that Coach Butterfield always
talked about was family and that his football team was a family
and we should treat each other like brothers.
That's the greatest birthday present
a person could have-- a coach could have
or anyone in athletics.
I kind of miss him.
To me, you also filled that role of a father figure and someone
who believed in me and supported me and understood
what I was doing and saw me for who I really was.
