so everybody who comes to Mexico City inevitably makes the video is this
really Mexico or can you believe this is Mexico or something commenting about the
crazy amount of wealth that is here in Mexico City and I want to have this
conversation with you guys
Harper and I are at a mall next to a road so I don't know if you can hear me and I'm
gonna guess that they're probably not gonna let me fill them in there but
maybe I'll try it looks big and fancy what are you eating Harper? Trail mix. and how is it? pretty yummy
I found a nut for you! oh thank you oh my favorite thank you baby, you're welcome
so Jesse is home very sick terrible timing
I mean he's okay but he does not feel like getting out of bed today so I
decided to bring Harper down to this mall so that we could burn off some of
her three-year-old energy and this place is swanky
I just meant I just meant don't lay on the ground baby I didn't mean you
couldn't touch the ground just don't lay on the ground all right so everybody who
comes to Mexico City inevitably makes the video is this really Mexico or can
you believe this is Mexico or something commenting about the crazy amount of
wealth that is here in Mexico City so I've had several interesting comments on my
comment about made in Mexico in the last video or two videos ago and I want to
have this conversation with you guys about this question that I've kind of
been mulling about in my brain I feel like what people are trying to say when
they make those videos is that oftentimes you hear one story about
Mexico if you're not in Mexico or you're not from Mexico you don't know somebody
from Mexico the story that you often hear
involves the cartels or poverty or illegal immigration right like that is
the story that we often hear about Mexico and a lot of times it's the only
story that we hear about Mexico and so I think what people are trying to do is
say hey look there is another side to this Mexico is an enormous country and
there is a lot of money here it is not all poverty and drugs and
crime right those of us who are here want people to know like look the things
that you hear about in the news are just one part of the story and do not
represent the whore of the country and I think that's what struck me about made
in Mexico okay so if you haven't seen it it's just keeping up with the
Kardashians in Mexico City right a bunch of super super rich people and all their
drama and all of that stuff and you know people have pointed out quite rightly
that that show really doesn't represent real Mexico like that's not a fair
representation of the country and I totally agree in the same way that the
Kardashians are in no way representative of the United States but I think what
struck me about that show is that and I don't know if this is intentional or or
what but I think the show aims to tell a different story
like look Mexico has the same kind of super rich wealthy out of touch people
as anywhere else and maybe it's not representative of most of Mexico but it
is representative of part of Mexico, does that make sense? however another thought
is almost saw somebody get hit by a car I'm fine I'm recovered they're fine
everybody's fine however there is also really intense income disparity in this
country there's income disparity in every country on earth income
disparity is a fact of our entire world however does that complicate our
watching of this show I mean there is a significant poverty issue in Mexico
does that color the way we see a show like made in Mexico is made in Mexico
fundamentally different than keeping up with the kardashians because of the
difference in median incomes between Mexico and the United States another
thing that I wanted to ask your opinion on is do people from the United States
and Canada over focus on the ritzy stuff is that a problem is
that because of you know I mean my country is pretty
well known for being quite focused on money am i just bringing that right here
with me when I'm like oh look there's another side to Mexico let's talk about
the super wealthy stuff okay these are just thoughts that I have
being in Mexico City and I really want to hear what you guys think and that is
getting pretty loud so I'm gonna stop here all right
talk to you soon all right hey guys Harper and I are back in the apartment and I
took the longest hottest shower I am gonna take a shower every single day
we're here because this shower is amazing
and also this bed is amazing and these sheets are amazing seriously so to go
back to what we were talking about earlier I have some questions how would
you guys describe the dominant story about Mexico like what is the story that
people hear most often about Mexico how would you describe that what do people
know about Mexico what do people not know about Mexico what do you think the
story should be or maybe what do you think the stories should be maybe there
isn't a Mexico maybe there are a million Mexicos it seems to me that whenever
something is easy to understand or simple it's probably not true and so
obviously the Mexico as dangerous scary poverty-stricken country it's too simple
it's not the whole truth on the flip side is there a danger of going too far
the other way and kind of rushing to embrace the
the positives or I hesitate to even use that word because is wealth a positive
are fancy things a positive is nice stuff a positive you know I'm not sure
that it's I'm not sure that it's that simple either so anyway that is on my
mind and I think will be on my mind as we stay here in Mexico City for the next
few days on the flip side I did not get stopped by anybody at the mall today could
have been because my kid was screaming and they figured not worth it so anyway I
hope you are having a great day I really want to hear your thoughts leave me a
comment and don't forget to subscribe and do that bell thing all right love
you bye
you
