Chicago has an amazing bar scene,
but you don't have to sit around, thank you, and drink.
There's so much more you can do with your cocktail.
So that is why I'm going to five bars on tonight's episode
that offer far more than just cocktails.
(rock music)
I'm at the Gwen Hotel, and I'm going to be
cocktailing and curling.
I am a sucker for a Chicago rooftop,
but I thought they all closed in the winter.
So to hear that there's a rooftop
with views and cocktails and curling, oh yes.
Hey, how are you doing, I'm Dawn.
- Great, hi I'm Michael.
I'm the General Manager at The Gwen Hotel, Chicago.
- I came up here, and I saw your beautiful bar,
and then this terrace, man, the views are out of control.
- The Gwen Terrace is without a doubt our showpiece.
Five stories above Michigan Avenue and Rush Street,
it's quite a sight to see.
- So I always think about rooftops as being, like,
a summertime thing, but you've changed all that.
- The curling rink we installed is really a way
of keeping our terrace open and activated
throughout the winter season.
- I love that you put all, like, the fireplaces and,
like, this seems like a hot little drink.
- Our mixologist put together a great warm cocktail program
that carries through the winter season.
- I also understand that I'm going to get a curling lesson.
- You are.
We partnered with Windy City Curling Club
and they help us with the inspiration of the court,
modified some rules and regulations
to give it a little competitive spirit.
- Alright, I'm gonna go get my curl on.
- Enjoy.
(electronic music)
- Hi, I'm Simon, from Windy City Curling Club.
While a traditional Scottish sport, it's a very social,
it's a gentleman's game.
How it's played with two or four people, men or women.
Very easy to learn but hard to master.
- I need the basic layout here.
- Okay, - Tell me the basics.
- Well we can do that.
Now this is not normal, it's not ice,
but right here we have our stones or rocks, alright?
And what we're playing on is a sheet, a part of a rink,
and then down there, that bullseye is called the house.
- Alright, I got it.
Stone or rock, rink, house.
- Very nice.
And the middle of that house is called the button,
and that's what we're going to try to shoot towards.
- I'll do a good luck cheers to you.
- Cheers to you!
- Oh we're gonna drink
- Cheers.
- This is the fun part of curling, cocktails.
- You're gonna want to do a lunge and throw it as such.
- Right.
- You pick up like this..
- Lunges, I know how to lunge from gym class.
- Pick it up, lunge, and throw it.
- I got this, alright, no I don't, okay.
You did like this, like a lunge?
- [Simon] Not a bad toss!
- First few throws came pretty natural.
I think Simon better watch out
'cause I think I got natural curler in me.
- You ready to get the match on?
- Yes, of course I'm ready.
I'm warmed up and ready.
- Alright.
- Good luck, Simon.
(laughs)
- [Simon] Throw an easy guard up there.
- Alright.
- [Simon] Ooh, that looks good!
- [Dawn] Ooh, mommy!
- [Simon] Ooh you got one in the house!
- That was hot.
- And great form.
- Dude!
- Yeah and I will.
- Is there any sort of taunting that I can do to you like
"Hey, batta batta batta"?
- Uh, there's nothing that curling has.
- There's typically no heckling.
- [Simon] Uh-oh this might work out well
- [Dawn] That's not good. - [Simon] For me!
Yeah I promoted that one,
I knew it was in an area she couldn't get to,
I was really nervous as she's going
there was an alley to get it.
So this is for everything.
All, - No pressure!
- This is for all the marbles.
Uh-oh!
(screams)
- [Dawn] Yes girl!
- Well, we might have to go measure.
I think yellow won by the hair of his chinny chin chin.
- She shot, it looked good,
it was going down the ice smooth,
it just ticked away and I was able to,
I was able to beat her by those couple inches.
- He ends up winning the match,
but I will say he got some help from yours truly.
- It's traditional in curling that the winner
buys the loser a beverage.
Let me go broomstack
- Yes! This is happening.
- Let's go!
- Come buy me a drink.
That's the least you can do.
