This course addresses common health issues found throughout educational settings. Topics
include chronic stress, health and well-being, school violence and the roles of hunger and
obesity as concerns in the school environment. A focus on school climate, the role of school-based healthcare and
preventing dropout from public health perspectives will be included.
Module One acquaints you with the multiple types of academic settings where students
learn, play and grow. Videos and readings will provide you with a general overview which
will serve as your foundation throughout the course.
In Module Two, you will develop discussion board questions related to the physical, mental
and social health of students and then reflect on one of those questions and perhaps even
share your own life experiences with your classmates. There is much you can learn from
each other! Module Three provides you an opportunity to
identify laws, programs, policies or services that impact have influenced school policy.
Your research on a topic of interest to you will support an annotated bibliography assignment
and provide you with additional knowledge on systems and programs that impact the educational
experiences of students. In Module Four, we take an in-depth look at
social determinants of health and how those impact the health of student populations.
Where students live, their levels of family support, the safety of their neighborhoods
and the availability of healthy foods impact their educational achievement. In Module Four,
you will develop an article review and then summarize and share the information you discovered
with your classmates on a discussion board. The Module Four quiz provides you an opportunity
to recall the most important facts and information from the learning materials, providing you
with a strong foundation of knowledge as you begin to think about your final assignments
in the course: an informational interview and guided reflection paper.
What is equity? What is equality? What is the difference between equity and equality?
We will look at these important topics in Module Five as you review readings and videos
that are related to these issues. Your main assignment in Module Five requires you to
create a timeline of social change as that impacted equity and equality in public schools
and an open-note quiz will enable you to reinforce key facts.
Module Six promises to be interesting and challenging as we look at current public health
topics in academic settings. Topics for review include: chronic stress in students (and teachers!),
violence in schools, hunger, obesity, the role of school based healthcare, transitional
students and preventing dropout from public health perspectives. In Module Six, you will
organize and schedule your informational interview with a public health professional in an academic
setting and share with your classmates who you are going to interview and why you selected
that person. Module Seven wraps up the course with your
informational interview, an experiential learning opportunity for you to learn in the real world
and then to reinforce that learning through reflection. You will then summarize and share
your final thoughts on the personal and professional growth you have accomplished through the course
learning activities and interactions and how that growth will transfer into your professional
