Welcome to season three of Public Works TV!
My name is Jerad Weiner and I'll be your host for today.
Before we get started let's take a look back at some
of our accomplishments since the last season.
We unveiled a symbol of San Francisco's unity, love and friendship
with our 19 fantastic sister cities.
Check out the new sign at Hallidie Plaza.
We finished construction of the City's
latest navigation Center at Division Circle in the Mission where homeless
people who have been living on the streets can get shelter, services and on
the path to a more stable living situation.
Our crews were out in full force cleaning up after the San Francisco Pride Parade
and removed more than 46,000 pounds of trash.
And we planted beautiful olive trees for Laurel Village Streetscape Improvement Project
on California Street.
Every year Mother Nature reminds us of her power by building towering sand dunes that loom
over the Great Highway on the western edge of San Francisco, forcing the
periodic closure of these traffic lanes when they get covered with a dense layer
of sand. And every year, San Francisco Public Works undertakes the Sisyphean
task of moving over 8,000 cubic yards of sand back up the seashore to keep the
coastal road open. Let's head out to Ocean Beach to see how we deal with these wind shaped mountains.
Parts San Francisco's Great Highway has been closed because high winds continue to
blow sand all over the roadway. The Department of Public Works says that the
road cannot open until the winds die down.
This location here at Noriega is a notorious spot for sand to get blown across the road and you can see
this massive sand drift. I'd say it's about three feet high and at least 30
feet long in this direction and as you can see over here...
Hi I'm Matt Naclerio and I'm the superintendent for the Bureau of Street
and Sewer Repair. Sand has built up to about 35 feet high, eventually the wind
will blow it into the street. Several times a week, we are closing the Great
Highway to clear the roadway from sand that spills from buildup. Safety is our
key priority here and we cannot keep a street open that's unsafe.
Once the sand builds up, especially in the bike lane, bicyclists can actually
hurt themselves by traveling over the sand. What some bicyclists are doing are
actually diverting over into a traffic lane which then places them in even
greater harm, so once a year were able to go down and remove the sand buildup.
That will reduce the amount of times that we have to close the Great Highway
We have a short window in which we can do this work because there is the
Western Snowy Plover which is a threatened shoreline bird that nests
here throughout the year. They typically come back in the beginning of July and
are here until the middle of May. So during that time we are not allowed to
do work on the beach side of Ocean Beach.
From mid-May till the end of June is when
they're actually not here then we can begin our work.
We're removing about 10,000 cubic yards a year. Right now we're doing two
intersections, you always work on clearing along the walkway and the
promenade area and some years will add more intersections depending on what the buildup is.
And what we're doing is using our excavators to knock the hill down
and then we have a bulldozer that's moving it off to the ocean shoreline.
And we'll do it again come next year.
I hope you enjoyed today's episode and if you'd

landscape architecture section to improve the City's sustainability and livability.
I am Public Works.
Together, we are Public Works.
So, some people have suggested building a wall...
a retaining wall of some sort that will retain the sand buildup.
So it doesn't really take care of the problem because you would have to build a wall as you
can see that's probably 35 feet high and I don't think we'll be able to get permits for that.
