What Is Mindfulness? 3 Simple Steps to Practice Mindfulness Right Now! - Duration: 4:40.
It's cleaning day around here, which means it's time to practice mindfulness.
Coming up, we'll talk about what mindfulness is, and learn a three-step
technique to turn the mundane into the mindful. So I'm sitting here in my shower.
Don't worry. I have all my clothes on this is still a family-friendly video. And
today, this shower is gonna teach us mindfulness. No guru. No meditation on a
mountaintop. Just cleaning a shower that is very, very full of grout. So what is
mindfulness? Well, it means being fully present in this moment. No judgment. No
right or wrong. Just being here, and being aware of thoughts, emotions, and
sensations in our body, and not being reactive or getting upset, but gently
accepting where you are and what you're doing. Now I've found that the events of my
everyday life - like cleaning a shower - are the ones that really help me to hone
my ability to pay attention. So here's the tip: Whatever you're doing right now
in this moment - whether it's scrubbing a toilet, raking leaves, or cleaning your
shower - whatever you're doing in life right now, take that as an opportunity to
practice mindfulness. So, using this shower cleaning experience,
I'll tell you how. First, set your intention to do the task. Put your focus
right where you are, as if the whole purpose of your life is this moment to
be completely immersed here. In this activity. That means instead of wishing
you were anywhere else in the world but cleaning a shower, embrace the task
Don't resign yourself to it. Embrace it. Second, be fully present for the task as
you do it, and all the little tasks involved. Notice them. Pay attention to
them. For me, that means being fully conscious as I put on the yellow gloves.
Feeling that sensation on my skin and really hearing the sound of the brush as
I scrub. Following the path of that brush back and forth, back and forth.
How does it feel going along the tile? How does it sound in my ears? How does it
feel in my body? And third, if I find my mind straying from a task as I do it, I
reset my focus back to what I'm doing. Yes, even scrubbing shower tiles. And
that's the key. When your mind wanders, simply return your focus back to what
you're doing right now. When you practice mindfulness, your mind will pull you into
the future or drag you back into the past.
That's what minds do. They give you a million things to think about other than
what's happening right now. So instead, create a new habit of focus.
Use whatever you're doing right now to help you do that. A teacher of mine once
said the purpose of your life is whatever you're doing right now. And if
that applies to a hike in the mountains or a vacation, or any of the other wonderful
moments in your life, then it also applies to cleaning your shower because
that's how we practice mindfulness. That's how we get out of the cycles of
discontent in our life. We get out of the cycle of good and bad. It's how we remove
ourselves from the cycles of disappointment when a moment doesn't
work out the way we want it to, or a person doesn't treat us how we want to
be treated. Look, when we're doing fun things, it's easy to be mindful. It's easy
to want to be mindful. To want to really soak in that moment and be there for it.
But when it's something we don't really want to do, those are the things that are
really there to help us practice mindfulness. So when you have a task to
do...a chore to do...don't judge the moment. Don't judge the task. Just be with it.
Just be in the shower. Let me know if this tip is working out for you, and keep
practicing. Thank you for watching. Be sure to

Lined Zipper Bag - Simple Serger Style | Whitney Sews - Duration: 4:28.
Hi everyone!
I'm Whitney and I post a new tutorial every week to help sewers of all skill levels learn
new projects and techniques.
This week I'm showing how to make a very simple lined zipper bag using a serger.
I started making these bags recently to hold different toys and things for my kids.
I needed bags that are fast to make and will hold up really well, so I came up with a hybrid
of my 5 minute zipper bag and the lined french seam version.
I'll be using a serger to finish all the seams on the inside of the bag.
If you don't have a serger you can use a zig zag stitch on a regular machine to overlock
the edges of the fabric.
Now let's get into the tutorial.
Start by cutting your fabrics.
You need a front and back from the outer and lining fabrics.
You want them to be the same width, but the back piece needs to be 2 inches longer.
It helps to cut one set of pieces out, place it wrong sides together with the other fabric,
and use them to cut out the second set.
With the fabrics still wrong sides together use your serger to sew around all the sides
of each set.
I do this by serging one side of the first set, then one side of the second, snip the
first one off and serge the next side of it and repeat until all four sides of each set
are serged.
It's basically a weird version of chain piecing.
Grab a zipper that is at least as long as the fabric pieces.
Mine is extra long because it's the only one I had handy.
Lay it face down against the outer fabric and sew next to the zipper teeth to attach.
Flip the zipper up and smooth the fabric away from the zipper teeth.
Sew a top stitch along the fabric edge.
Lay that piece right sides up and the other piece right sides down on top.
Line up the serged edge with the edge of the zipper tape.
Sew next to the zipper teeth to attach.
Open the piece up and top stitch along the fabric edge again.
At this point it is very important to unzip the zipper part way so the tab is inside the
fabric area.
Bring the other side of the fabric down so the sides and bottom edges line up.
The zipper should be a small distance down from the top edge.
Add plenty of craft clips and sew down the two sides and across the bottom.
When you cross over the zipper teeth sew carefully and back stitch a time or two so the stitches
are extra secure.
Use a pair of scissors to carefully cut off the excess zipper.
Open the zipper the rest of the way and turn the bag right sides out.
Your lined zipper bag is now complete.
Like I mentioned earlier I have been making a ton of these for my kids to hold their buttons
and beads, magnetic letters, and a lot more items we use for homeschooling.
I showed several of the bags in my most recent Sew Your Stash update.
I'll have that video linked right over here to the side.

Until next time, Happy Sewing!

Create a Simple Android Application | Quotes App | Basics | Android Studio Tutorail - Duration: 10:00.
In this video, let's create a simple android application, which displays predefined quotes,
randomly.
This is what we are going to build.
Let's begin.
Open android studio.
Let the name of the application be 'Quote'.
Choose default settings for a quick set up.
Once the build is completed, let's open XML file and create a simple user interface.
Change the layout to 'RelativeLayout'.
It's one of the simplest layout.
We will remove the textview and add a button.
Let the button text be 'Next Quote'.
In relative layout, we can place the element in the center using 'layout_centerInParent'
attribute.
Next, we will create a textview, where the quote will be displayed.
If we use the 'layout_centerInParent' attribute again, it will overlap the button.
So, we will use the 'layout_above' attribute to place it above the button.
The ID of the button should be specified as its value.
For that, let's add a new ID to the button.
Use this ID as the value for 'layout_above' attribute.
For a better alignment, we can set the 'layout_centerHorizontal' to true.
Also, we can give an ID for the textview, for later use.
Since the text looks small, we can use the 'textAppearance' attribute to make it little
bigger.
For this application, we need few quotes to be stored in the application.
In android, strings are stored in the file 'strings.xml', which is under resource > value.
A string is defined inside this file like this.
Give a name to be used as a reference.
Let it be 'quote1'.
And between opening and closing of the 'string' tag, write the text.
We will write a quote and at the end, the name of person who said that.
In a similar way, let's create few more quotes in 'strings.xml'.
Now let's write logic for this application.
Open the java file and let's define a new function 'displayQuote'.
Since we are going to display quotes randomly, we need a random number generator.
For that, declare a 'Random' class variable named 'random' at the top of the class, using
the 'new' keyword.
To store the generated random number, use a integer variable inside the class.
Now generate the random number using 'nextInt' function of 'random'.
We have 10 quotes to displayed randomly.
so we will generate random number between 1 and 10.
To achieve that, pass parameter to the function like this, and add the result with minimum
value.
This generated a random number everytime, between 1 and 10.
Just use the switch statement in the function to select the random quote from 'strings.xml',
using the random number passed as parameter.
In order to store the random quote, let's declare a empty string before the switch block.
Now, with respect to the number between 1 and 10, we will assign the quote to the string
variable.
Use the 'getString' function.
The parameter for this function is the resource ID of the string.
We can specify it as R.string.quote name.
R stands for 'Resource'.
Similarly, assign the respective quotes to all possible numbers.
The quote should be displayed in the TextView in user interface.
For setting the quote to TextView, we should have reference to the TextView.
We use the id of the textview defined earlier, for referencing it.
Go to java file and declare a TextView at the top if the class.
Inside the 'onCreate' function, use the 'findViewById' function to link the textview with java code.
Pass the id of textview as parameter to this function.
Now, after the switch statement, we will set the selected quote to the textview, using
the function 'setText', like this.
The quote should be displayed when the button is clicked.
For that, we should handle the button click.
Do the same procedures we did for textview.
For detailed explanation about button click, and ways of handling it, watch the previous
video in my channel playlist.
We will handle the button click with a click listener.
Use the 'setOnClickListener' function.
In the generated overrided function, we will call the 'displayQuote' function.
So everytime the button is clicked, the quote is displayed.
Run the application and see how it works.
As you can see the the quote and the persons name is displayed together, and also there
is no enough spacing around the text.
Let's make it beautiful.
Got to 'strings.xml' file and add the new line character '\n' between quote and persons
name.
Add a '-' in front of the name too.
For a better spacing, add padding to the textview.
let it be 20dp.
Run the application again and see how it looks.
Good enough.
One more thing we can do is, display the quote first time without the user clicking the button.
For that, go to java file, and inside the 'onCreate' function, call the 'displayQuote'
function once.
It will display a random quote once when the application is opened, without the button
click.
Thanks for watching, see you in the next video.

A Simple Technique To Get Someone's Attention - Duration: 1:55.
James Schramko here. Today, I want to share with you a very simple technique
to get somebody's attention. So recently, I was on a podcast. A friend of mine,
Ezra Firestone, was on this podcast and he suggested me as a guest when he
mentioned my name in the podcast which was a wonderful gesture. And this person
who had the podcast got in touch with me, invited me on, and I presented. Then some
time later I got a package in the post from the host of the podcast. Inside that
package was a framed picture of me on the podcast with the host with a great
caption from the podcast. I got some wrist bands with motivational quotes, a
sticker, and a t-shirt which I'm wearing now. So big shout out to Trey Lewellen
who sent me this gear. But the thing is, when I see this t-shirt or I see those
items, I remember Trey and he stands out from all the podcasts I've been on
before. It's rare that I'll get sent a gift like that. In fact, anyone who sends
me a gift whether it's a magazine subscription to surfing, a leg rope, fins,
any sort of book (which I get quite often), t-shirts, those sort of things, caps, I do
recognize that that person is occupying my attention at that time. When I receive
the gift, when I open the gift they're getting my attention. I got a hamper
recently from Ryan Levesque. Turns out that his new book is coming out soon. I'm
likely to interview him about it not because he sent me a gift but because I
remember who he is. Of course, I remember who Ryan Levesque is but the thing is
he's going to that effort, they're staying top of mind. Send out
gifts, get attention of your prospects and your customers. And it's an age-old
technique but it still works today just like any other time.
