Kibera, being Africa's largest urban slum

A lot of residents don't have running water or toilets

Even having a clean, dry place to live can be an issue

I thought being a doctor was the best way to help people

But actually the world needs more engineers

My name is Faith Akinyi

I first heard about Engineers Without Borders at university

They want to encourage young people to get into engineering

Because they want to make a difference

The brief for this placement was all about

working with the community group to help protect them from flooding

Engineering in this context is enabling the residents of Kibera

To have less worry about the basic human needs

Which I think we all take for granted back in the UK

In Kibera there are a lot of drains

A lot of people throw their rubbish either in the drain

Or next to the drain

Blocking them

The rain starts

and it's a massive thunderstorm for a few hours

This rubbish can then end up in houses

Or playgrounds and open spaces

We don't have to do very complex engineering solutions

Doing drainage design here

You just go back to first principles of

How water flows, how much water there will be and

How much space you'll need to get it out

A very simple solution can make a huge difference

T o everyone who lives around that area

We also have worked on a school

We've had to build a two-storey building

We've put in improved toilets

And the classrooms are now safer and cleaner environments

Where they can actually study

It's such a nice space

That the school has noticed an increase in their intake

Because more people want to come to the school

More people want to study there

If you have a clean safe place to live

If you have a clean safe place to study

Residents can concentrate on going to schools

Or getting jobs, bringing money in for their families

To be looking to help improve the world

Engineering is a great option to do that

Whether it's back at home in the UK

Whether it's around the world

There's always something available for everyone

onions - 2 medium

ginger garlic paste - 1 tsp

turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp

mint leaves - 1 bunch

boiled n peeled Eggs - 4

tomatoes - 3 medium

salt - to taste

red chilli powder - 1 n 1/2 tsp

coriander powder - 1 tsp

garam masala powder - 1/2 tsp

mix nicely

curd - 1 cup

water - 6 cups

coriander leaves - 1 bunch

cover and allow water to boil

for 5 minutes

after 5 minutes, add soaked rice

soaked basmati rice - 3 cups

i have soaked rice for 30 minutes

cover n cook on medium flame

for 15 to 20 minutes

after 20 minutes

rice is properly cooked

let us dish out to a plate

spicy egg pulao is ready

serve with raita

Hi Friends, Today we will learn what internet is

and how it works

whenever we say internet

the cloud bubble comes in everyone's mind

but that's not what internet is

Internet is just a wire and

lot of servers are connected to it

these servers can communicate with each others

for these servers to communicate it needs an IP

these IP address are tough to remember

so they used domain name to point these IP

so it was easy for everyone

to remember the Domain name

so if we need to connect to internet

we need an IP address

but the problem is we have only 2^32 IP's in IPv4

so its impossible to assign a IP to everyone in the world

so they decided to split the network into two i.e WAN and LAN

LAN is Local Area Network

WAN is Wide Area Network

LAN is used only in side a house or organisation

Similarly WAN is used

all over the world

basic concept behind is

connecting all the LAN through WAN

so one can communicate from one end of the world to other

Now let's look how they used the IP address for LAN and WAN

Intitially they classified the IP address

into classes from A to E

class A to class C

is used for normail networking

in this they segregated the IP into Public and Private

public IP is used in WAN

private IP is used in LAN

so they decided to choose

from Class A to Class C they choose

a range of address reserved for Private IP

for eg. in class A

10.0.0.0 to 10.255.255.255

is assigned as private IP

similarly for class B and C a range

was assigned as private IP

class D is used for multi-casting network

multicasting is nothing

but each Ip of class D

is pointer to single

or group of IP in other classes

similar to a distribution list in whatsapp

Class E is reserverd

for research

Ok, now let's see

how we access internet from our system

there are two people

to access the internet, they need a ISP

ISP is a internet service provider

he would have already established a connection with internet

so we can establish a connection with this ISP

after establishing a connection we will get a private IP

now we can browse the internet

but there is a problem in it

for example you.. your boss..

your are browsing www.facebook.com

your boss is browsing news.google.com

your request is forwarded

to facebook through ISP

similarly your boss request will be

forwarded to news.google.com

but the response from both the servers

can interchange between you and your boss

say, facebook response is

sent to your boss

news.gogle.com response is

sent to you will be a problem

to solve this

whereever two systems are connected

a router is placed there

this router will assign a unique ID to your packet

and will forward it

similarly during response

it checks the identifier in the packet

and find which system requested this response

to forward it to that specific system

Alright, when video started

you said internet is just a wire

but how can they lay wires between continents

to establish communication with different continents

it will be done wireless right?

Some of them believe it is done so..

but the answer is no!

From one continent to other they establish connection

with submarine cabling

these submarine cabling are

laid by some of the non profit organisation

formed by some of the institution in that continent

this organisation takes care of

maintenance of these cables
