The fact is, the award-winning star has just turned 50.

Ms Xu has been an A-lister in the country for around three decades, having appeared in some of the most popular films, TV series and theatre plays in China.

She is best known for a pair of dimples which her fans describe as her 'trademark of beauty'.

In a trending social media post Ms Xu uploaded on her birthday on Tuesday, she described how she still felt like a young woman despite having been born 50 years ago.

She wrote: 'When I was 20, I was like a 10-year-old. To the others, I was outstanding and luckily, but to me I was just finishing my homework.

'I spent my 30 year old feeling a bit lost and nervous like a 15-year-old teenager: I would throw tantrums when I was angry and I would cry when I felt wronged.

'As I turned 40, I had just experienced the challenge faced by 20-year-olds: to leave the school and enter the real world...'

She then added: 'Today I turned 50, and I am more calm, honest and responsible just like a 25-year-old.'

In the message to her 16 million followers on Weibo, the Chinese equivalent to Twitter, the sentimental actress said she appreciated the 'magic of life' after living through 'half a century'.

She said her secret of leading a youthful life is to be kind, which she described as her armour.

Ms Xu thanked her fans for their support hoping they would like her films, before writing 'the sun has come out, I will put on my armour and step out of the castle to carry on enjoying the warn and sunny (life)...'

Her post has sparked a discussion among Chinese net users and media over her ageless looks and elegant life attitude.

A trending topic quickly emerged on Weibo under the hashtag 'how old is Xu Qing'.

One showbiz journalist from Chinese news site Sina commented in a column: 'Xu Qing has been living in a free and liberating way. (She) keeps a slim figure and glowing skin on her face, just like a teenage girl.'

Another author praised in a blog that middle-aged Xu lived like a vibrant young girl.

The 5ft 5in beauty enrolled into the Beijing Film Academy in 1988 and had her first major breakthrough in 1990, at the age of 21.

At the time, she starred in drama 'Life on a String' by acclaimed Chinese director Chen Kaige, whose 'Farewell My Concubine' would move on to snap the Golden Palm at the Cannes Film Festival three years later.

In 2016, Ms Xu was crowned the Best Actress by the Chinese Oscar, the Hundred Flowers Awards, for her performance in action-packed Chinese thriller 'Mr. Six'.

Ms Xu has rarely appeared in international films.

In 2017, she portrayed an Interpol agent named Lin in science fiction thriller '24 Hours to Live', which features American actor Ethan Hawke.
