Yesterday is Sunday, so I was at home.

And today is Monday. I am here in order to teach you.

Before beginning the new lesson, we listen to the piece of music.

Is it interesting?

The piece of music is composed by Mozart. Do you know him?

He was an Austrian musician and composer.

He lived from 1756 to 1791.

He started composing at the age of five

and wrote more than 600 pieces of music.

As we can see, there are many verbs in the paragraph.

But the form of these verbs is different from the form of them in dictionary.

Some of them are added "-ed" to the end of word.

For example, "live" - "lived", "start" - " started"

Some of them are changed entirely like " be"- "was", "write" - " wrote".

this feature of verbs is also one of the feature of tense we learn today. That is PAST SIMPLE TENSE.

The lesson today can be divided into 3 parts.

The first part is about the form of past simple, next is about the usage and the final part is about signals.

Let's start with form of past simple.

Today we only take about the form with normal verb. How do we form the past simple tense?

Look at the examples. 1. He lived from 1756 to 1791.

In this sentence "He" is a subject, "lived" is a verb in the past form.

Base on this example, we can make the form of positive form, that is subject plus verb in past form.

The example 2, "He didn't play video game yesterday."

"He" is also a subject, "didn't" is an auxiliary and "play" is a verb in the infinitive.

So the form of negative can be made like: subject+ didn't or did not+ verb in the infinitive.

And the final example, "Did she go to the zoo 2 days ago?"

"Did" is an auxiliary, "she" is a subject and "go" is a verb in the infinitive.

So with the question we have form " Did+ subject+ verb infinitive+...?"

In past simple tense, auxiliary "did" is used for all subjects.

Next, I talk about the verbs in past form.

We can divide verbs into 2 groups : regular and irregular verb.

With regular verb, we add "ed" to the end of word. For example, "watch" - "watched",

"cook" -"cooked", "play" - "played", "listen"- "listened"

With the irregular verb, for example, "see"- "saw", "go"- "went", " sing" -"sang", "write"- "wrote".

We can find form of them in the second column of the table of irregular verbs.

For example, this is a table of irregular verbs in English.

We use the past simple tense when we talk about the action that finished in the past.

It means it happened before now.

And we use some words or phrases like "yesterday", " last month", "last year", "2 days ago", "in 1997"

in order to announce the past simple, the past time.

Those are also signals of past simple tense.

Let's practice to remember. Exercise 1: Complete the sentences.

Four sentences are in the past simple tense because "last week", " 2 days ago",

"yesterday"and " last night" are show the past time.

begin with the sentence number 1

1. It is a negative sentence, so the full sentence is "I didn't go to the supermarket last week"

number 2 This is a question, so we should fill to the blankets "Did she stay at a hotel 2 days ago?"

And number 3 "This is a positive sentence and "play" is a regular verb

so we can fill "played" to the blanket. "Nam played football with his friends yesterday."

Sentence 4 is a positive with the irregular verb "write"

so the full sentence is "Mary wrote a letter to John last night."
