Hello and welcome to Fashion Bites. I'm Ellen Byerrum, author of the screwball noir

Crime of Fashion Mysteries, featuring Lacey Smithsonian, a fashion reporter in

Washington DC, The City That Fashion Forgot. She solves crimes with fashion

clues and gets a little help from her friends. When I write my mysteries, I want

to feel that no matter how "out there" the plot or the characters are, that some

of it is grounded in reality. I like to walk where my characters walk and

experience the sights and sounds and aromas they do. Today, with a little help

from some videos and photographs, I invite you to take another view of

Lacey's life and environment. This time, her work environment. A few weeks ago, Bob

and I were in Washington DC and visited some familiar locations that pop up now

and again in my mysteries, and at the moment we're on location in our back yard to

take advantage of the lovely weather (except that it's raining) and the roses

and get the feeling of the great outdoors! I hope you enjoy it, along with

the occasional bird chirping and thunder sounding. In last week's video we went to

Alexandria, Virginia, the Torpedo Factory, Dyke Marsh and Huntley Meadows. Today

we're sticking to inside the Beltway in Washington DC. I'll be giving you a brief

description of the photos and footage and reading brief parts from several of

the books. First a note on Washington DC: The city's footprint was designed by

military engineer Pierre L'Enfant, who was born in France and served in the

American Revolutionary War. Many people like to hate L'Enfant because of his

green squares and circles that create angles that make driving and getting

around the city challenging, but that's much of DC's charms, particularly if you

are on foot. Now let's take a brief trip to Washington DC. Imagine you're on the

Metro heading to Lacey's subway stop at Farragut West. She spends most of her

workdays at The Eye Street Observer. At the top of the stairs of the Metro you

are just steps away from The Eye's offices.

Here are some descriptions of Farragut Square from both KILLER HAIR and GRAVE

APPAREL. "The Eye Street Observer was located on Eye Street in a granite and

glass building facing Farragut Square, under the ever-watchful eye of Admiral

David "Damn the torpedoes!" Farragut in all his bronze glory. Farragut Square

was a block of neat green park with diagonal walkways converging on the

statue of Admiral Farragut at its center. White Christmas lights were twinkling at

the entrance of the Army and Navy Club facing the park on the east side.

Lacey assumed from the stream of formally dressed couples passing through the

Square that the very elegant club was the scene of a Christmas party that

night. There was another population in the Square, in striking contrast to the

fancy-dressed partygoers: Homeless people claimed the park's benches at dusk to

store their meager belongings for the night. Several of them seemed to live in

makeshift lean-tos attached to the benches. Other crowds were heading for

the escalator down to the Metro station on The Eye's corner, opposite the Square.

The sidewalk was a bustle of commuters on their way home or to shop or to meet

friends at a happy hour at a neighborhood bar." Farragut Square is also

the site where, in DESIGNER KNOCKOFF, Lacey meets Damon Newhouse, who runs the Dead

Fed dot com website, and where Brooke and Damon meet, defying the "pheromone jammers"

that keep men and women apart. It's a straight walk from Farragut Square up

Connecticut Avenue to the Dupont Circle area where Lacey's friend Stella Lake

works as a stylist, but before you head up there you might want to pick up a cup

of good coffee at Firehook Bakery located on the west side of the square.

There are lots of distractions and restaurants on the way up Connecticut

Avenue. You can see the entry to Dupont Circle Metro station and you might be

tempted to buy a hot doughnut where Harlan Wiedemeyer frequently buys his treats, at

the small Krispy Kreme next to the subway stop. You'll also pass Kramer

Books and Afterwords, a bookstore and cafe with

additional temptations. There are numerous salons on Connecticut Avenue.

Imagine that Stylettos, where Stella works, is just one more. Of course

Stylettos is more fun and has the best gossip, courtesy of the Stella

Broadcasting Network, the Voice of Dupont Circle. Stylettos appears in many of the

books. These excerpts come from KILLER HAIR. "Stylettos was about ten blocks

from the office, a short cab ride or a nice walk. Lacey decided to walk, but she

did a double-take when she got there. The familiar lilac interior was freshly

painted over in cream with white trim. The stations had been moved around and

now everyone was in a new location. New black-and-white posters adorned the

walls, and a glass brick partition divided the reception area from the stylists'

stations. 'Makeover for the salon. Looks good, doesn't it? The lilac was definitely

passe,' Stella said. 'But where's Angie's station?' Lacey asked. 'I don't see it!' Stella

looked at her as if she was an idiot. 'Well, no one was gonna use it! Jeez, you

can't expect that! Not after Angie died there, Lacey, for God's sakes!'" The actual

circle of Dupont Circle, with its stately fountain in the center, is also a crime

scene, in HOSTILE MAKEOVER. In this scene, Amanda Manville is a temperamental model

having a screaming fit with Stella, while Lacey and her boyfriend Vic Donovan look

on. "Amanda was a vision of shrieking loveliness wearing a long dark red panne

velvet evening gown. It was a Christmas fantasy of a dress, featuring a hood

trimmed in white faux fur. Deep wide cuffs on the bell sleeves were also

trimmed in white fur. Against the autumnal parkscape of the Circle it

would paint a serene picture for her premiere winter catalog and play up the

fantasies that encourage women to buy those perfect dresses they never wear. It

was quite a tableau, Amanda pointing and screeching, Stella gesturing wildly,

terrorized underlings scurrying everywhere -- when suddenly three loud pops

rang out. It sounded like a car backfiring but much louder. At first Lacey

didn't realize what it was, but Vic knew. Before the second shot was fired

Vic threw Lacey to the ground beside the fountain and covered her body with his."

Now not far away from the Circle is a location that helped inspire part of the

theatrical storyline in THE MASQUE OF THE RED DRESS. There are a variety of

theatres and theatre groups that inspired me, as well as my own background

as a playwright. I was involved in theatre in Washington DC, and this book

was a way to relive those days. Here's a description of the theatre from THE

MASQUE OF THE RED DRESS. "Kinetic Theatre occupied an old building just off 16th

Street Northwest near Dupont Circle, where it had resided for several years.

The two-centuries-old red brick building had served many purposes. Once a church,

later a warehouse and a nightclub, it had found its mission as a theatre for

various troupes for at least the past half century. The

edifice harmonized with the rest of the block's old-fashioned apartment buildings

and townhouses. Miraculously, it had not been scooped up by developers, scraped or

turned into a jutting high-rise of overpriced condominiums. Lacey opened the

door and felt a welcome blast of chilled air. Though the building was old,

the renovated lobby had the smell of fresh wood and paint." I hope you can see

how locations inspire me. My Crime of Fashion stories need the feel of real

settings. And now you can get back on the Metro with the rest of the city and the

commuters and the kids and head home. I hope you enjoyed this small tour of

locations in my books. That's all I have for now.

Washington Swamp On Alert As 2 Supreme Court Justices Prepare To Retire - Duration: 3:01.

Do you hear that?

It's the sound of countless liberals shrieking in fear.

Sounds pretty good to me!

Despite their best efforts, the left has not been able to topple Trump.

Time and again they've made huge boasts.

He couldn't win the election.

We're going to stop the Inauguration.

He's getting impeached.

They'll never pass the tax bill.

Yet time and again the democrats prove they are all talk, no punch.

Now things are about to get much worse for the party of Stalin.

Democrats have clung on to a wee bit of power, thanks to the balance of Justices on the Supreme

Court.

Their time is rapidly running out.

Some of the biggest leftists on the Court are well past their prime.

And people know they are about to hang up the gavel.

Two of the most prominent Justices are about to help Trump score historic wins.

From The Guardian:

With speculation mounting over the possible retirement of supreme court justice Anthony

Kennedy, Trump could have a lasting impact on reshaping America's most important court.

"It will create the most conservative court since the mid-1930s," he added.

While the likelihood of a pending vacancy is far from confirmed, judicial watchers have

set their sights on Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, a progressive icon who turned 85 this year,

and Kennedy, a critical swing vote who has been the subject of retirement rumors for

the second straight year.

Any vacancy prior to 2020 would almost certainly be filled by Trump, and a rules change adopted

by Republicans during the Gorsuch nomination fight enabled the Senate to confirm supreme

court justices with a simple majority vote.

Kennedy was a Ronald Reagan appointee.

While he is often viewed as conservative, he has historically voted in favor of liberal

issues as well.

Giving rise to his role as a "swing" vote.

But he and Ginsburg are reaching an age where they can't stay on for long.

Both are in their mid-80's, an old age for any job.

Despite not being physically fit for the office, you might wonder about their mental state.

With each passing year, staying on the Supreme Court will become a bigger challenge.

Expect them to retire sooner, rather than later.

Which is a big win for President Trump.

The Supreme Court was a major issue for many voters.

Had Crooked Hillary won, she would have polluted the highest court in the land with radical,

Socialist justices.

They would have torn our Constitution to shreds.

Who knows what kind of horrible damage would have been done?

Thank God Trump is in the White House.

He has promised to appoint conservative, Constitutionalists to the Supreme Court.

As such, they will have a tremendous impact on our country.

You better believe issues like abortion will be overturned immediately.

And that's just for starters.

A dynamic change will take place in our country.

Liberals will lose plenty of sleep, as they watch their toxic policies get demolished.

I, for one, couldn't be happier.

Growing an inclusive economy in Greater Washington - Duration: 1:31.

People should get smarter faster about understanding that business in collaboration

with government, and not-for-profits, can help enhance economic growth.

Economic growth is what drives wages.

It helps people, it creates household formation.

When JPMorgan goes into a community, the physical thing you see is the branch.

But we also have, behind that, mortgage lending.

We bring in philanthropy, which is around work skills, affordable housing.

We support entrepreneurs of color, we support middle market companies.

So, you know, it's the full force and faith of JPMorgan coming in to help a community expand.

Washington is the third largest market in the United States,

if you include the greater Washington area, which includes Maryland and Virginia.

It's the home of our government.

It's a huge tech center.

So it's a great place to do business.

It has wonderful spots, and it has places that need help.

So I was just in Ward 7 and Ward 8, and we have to do a better job as a society figuring

out how we can help folks who need help.

So in the greater Washington area, we'll be opening 70 branches.

So it's not just a branch, it'll be multiple branches that obviously creates jobs.

Directly that's 700 people.

It's lending to local businesses.

It's affordable housing.

It's helping people manage their investments.

Hopefully it helps lift up the community.

I mean, that's why we're doing it and why we work so closely with a lot of local institutions

who know the neighborhoods really well.

Top North Korean official expected to deliver letter to Trump in Washington - Duration: 10:13.

A top aide to Kim Jong Un is expected to hand a letter from the North Korean leader to President Trump in Washington Friday, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said after reporting "good progress" in talks between the two sides to revive an on-again, off-again nuclear summit

Kim Yong Chol was spotted leaving his hotel in New York City early Friday for the trip to Washington in a convoy of SUVs

He is the highest-ranking North Korean official to visit the U.S. in 18 years, and his trip to the White House will be a highly symbolic sign of easing tensions after fears of war escalated amid North Korean nuclear and missile tests last year

"I am confident we are moving in the right direction," Pompeo told reporters at a Thursday news conference in New York after meeting Thursday with former North Korean military intelligence chief Kim Yong Chol

"Our two countries face a pivotal moment in our relationship, and it would be nothing short of tragic to let this opportunity go to waste

"Pompeo optimistic after North Korea meetings, but lacks details on a summitPompeo would not say that the summit is a definite go for Singapore on June 12 and could not say if that decision would be made after Trump reads Kim Jong Un's letter

However, his comments were the most positive from any U.S. official since Mr. Trump abruptly canceled the meeting last week after belligerent statements from the North

The two countries, eying the first summit between the U.S. and the North after six decades of hostility, have also been holding negotiations in Singapore and the demilitarized zone between the two Koreas

Early Thursday, Mr. Trump told reporters "we are doing very well" with North Korea

He added there may even need to be a second or third summit meeting to reach a deal on North Korean denuclearization but still hedged, saying "maybe we'll have none

"Trump shows optimism on North Korea – what has changed?Pompeo, the former CIA chief who has traveled to North Korea and met with Kim Jong Un twice in the past two months, said he believed the country's leaders are "contemplating a path forward where they can make a strategic shift, one that their country has not been prepared to make before

"He tweeted from New York: "Good progress today during our meetings" with Kim and his team

Yet he also said at his news conference that difficult work remains including hurdles that may appear to be insurmountable as negotiations progress on the U

S. demand for North Korea's complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization

"We will push forward to test the proposition that we can achieve that outcome," he said

Pompeo spoke after meeting with Kim Yong Chol for a little more than two hours at the residence of the deputy U

S. ambassador to the United Nations. The talks had been expected to be held in two sessions, one in the morning and one in the early afternoon, and had not been expected to conclude until 1:30 p

m. Instead, the two men wrapped up at 11:25 a.m.Pompeo said they finished everything they needed to address in the morning session

Immediately afterward, he tweeted that he had had substantive talks on the priorities for the potential summit

Pompeo was accompanied by Andrew Kim, the head of a CIA unit assigned to work on North Korea, and Mark Lambert, the head of the State Department's Korea desk

"Our secretary of state is having very good meetings," Mr. Trump told reporters at Joint Base Andrews before departing on a trip to Texas

He said of the North Koreans, "I believe they will be coming down to Washington on Friday

A letter being delivered to me from Kim Jong Un. It is very important to them.""It is all a process," he said of arranging the summit

"Hopefully we will have a meeting on the 12th."Despite the upbeat messaging in the United States, Kim Jong Un, in a meeting with Russia's foreign minister on Thursday, complained about the U

S. trying to spread its influence in the region, a comment that may complicate the summit plans

"As we move to adjust to the political situation in the face of U.S. hegemonism, I am willing to exchange detailed and in-depth opinions with your leadership and hope to do so moving forward," Kim told Sergey Lavrov

North Korea's flurry of diplomatic activity following an increase in nuclear weapons and missile tests in 2017 suggests that Kim is eager for sanctions relief to build his economy and for the international legitimacy a summit with Mr

Trump would provide. But there are lingering doubts on whether he will ever fully relinquish his nuclear arsenal, which he may see as his only guarantee of survival in a region surrounded by enemies

Mr. Trump views a summit as a legacy-defining opportunity to make a nuclear deal, but he has left the world guessing since canceling the meeting last week in an open letter to Kim that complained of the North's "tremendous anger and open hostility

" North Korea's conciliatory response to that letter appears to have put the summit back on track

Kim Yong Chol is the most senior North Korean visitor to the United States since Vice Marshal Jo Myong Rok visited Washington in 2000 to meet President Bill Clinton and Secretary of State Madeleine Albright

That was the last time the two sides, which are technically at war, attempted to arrange a leadership summit

It was an effort that ultimately failed as Clinton's time in office ran out, and relations turned sour again after George W

Bush took office in early 2001 with a tough policy on the North.Kim Yong Chol, vice chairman of the North Korean ruling party's central committee, was allowed into the United States despite being on a U

S. sanctions list, and North Korean officials are not normally allowed to travel outside the New York area

The North Korean mission at the United Nations did not respond to an email seeking comment Thursday, and phone calls were not answered

___Lederman reported from Washington. Associated Press writers Christopher Bodeen in Beijing, Jonathan Lemire in Washington and Edith M

Lederer at the United Nations contributed.
