Public speaking for non native English speakers - Duration: 9:17.- Public speaking is hard, right?
I mean, you have your fear to deal with.
You need to know what to say and how to say it
on stage or on video.
There are so many things to keep in mind.
How to be engaging, how to be confident,
how to be compelling,
how to connect with the audience in the best way,
how to present information that transforms
and not just informs, right?
So many things to keep in mind.
Now let's add an extra layer on top of it.
What if English is not your first language?
Today, I'm sharing with you five public speaking tips
for non-native English speakers.
I'm Victoria Lioznyansky and I help entrepreneurs
overcome their fear of public speaking and transform
into confident, compelling, and captivating speakers.
I, obviously, have firsthand experience
with being a non-native speaker and speaking with an accent.
I immigrated from Russia 23 years ago
and even though I have never been back
and although I've only lived
in the United States for 23 years, accent does not go away.
When you come as a child, you are able to
get rid of your accent eventually,
but as an adult, mm-mm, doesn't happen.
So for those of us who came as adults,
we are stuck speaking with an accent.
Now, there is nothing wrong with speaking with an accent.
I love my accent.
But it does make it a little harder
for those listening to us to understand.
Tip number one: speak slowly.
This is the biggest advice I can give you.
Now, this is really hard for me
because in my native Russian, I am a very fast speaker.
So I had to teach myself very early on to slow down
and try to pronounce everything just a little better,
not be too lazy about pronunciation, and speak slowly.
Now, this is particularly important on stage or on video.
I am actually making myself to speak
a lot slower than I really want to.
And the truth is, if you are on stage
for more than 30 seconds,
or if you are on video for more than 30 seconds,
your audience is going to get used to your accent.
But the key is to speak slowly
to allow our audience to catch up with us
and to process what we're saying with the accent.
Tip number two: do not use words you cannot pronounce.
This is like, duh.
That's even a good tip without accent.
But with accent, there are certain sounds that,
depending on which country you come from,
they're completely unpronounceable.
For anybody coming from eastern Europe,
the English "ih" and "ee" sounds identical.
I am having massive trouble distinguishing between those two
when I speak.
Which means, there are certain words I do not use.
For example, I do not say, S-H-E-E-T
because I know I'm going to completely butcher it.
I always say piece of paper, or a document.
I would replace it with any synonym I can find.
But I will not say it.
So get to know where you sound funny,
where you sound completely wrong.
Obviously work on it, try to pronounce it better,
I am working on it, I'm definitely working on it,
but if you know that in a critical situation
you will say it wrong, do not use that word at all.
There are plenty of synonyms.
Always replace whatever you cannot say with a synonym.
And that leads us to tip number three:
what you can do is record yourself speaking
and then have a native English-speaking friend
listen to the recording and give you some pointers
and advice about certain sounds
that you may not be pronouncing right
or maybe you have a problem with
the way you structure your sentences, with the intonation.
It is important and it is very hard
for us non-native speakers figure out on our own
because we just, you know, we're used to the way we speak
and for us it's hard to tell, are we speaking correctly
in the way it flows and it sounds, or not.
So the best thing to do is to record yourself
speaking for a few minutes
and then have your friend review it
and give you some honest, constructive feedback.
Tip number four: practice.
This is a good tip for everybody,
not necessarily for non-native English speakers.
But for us it's especially important to practice.
Because we are not speaking in our native language
and it it is a little harder, obviously,
being on stage or being on video
and speaking a different language.
And so it's very important to practice,
to practice speaking.
Because not only you practice being on camera
or you practice being in front of the audience,
but you also practice speaking in the language
that's not your native language.
You practice finding words in your head very quickly.
And if you stumble, what do you do?
You pause, that's right.
If you cannot find a word very quickly in your head,
you don't go like, uuuh.
You just pause and come up with a synonym
as quickly as you can.
But you figure all of this out when you practice
so practice as much as you can.
And my tip number five: focus on your audience.
Truly, if you focus on your audience,
instead of focusing on yourself, how you speak,
how you sound, what kind of an accent you have,
what kind of mistakes you're making,
if you focus on yourself,
you won't be able to focus on your audience.
And it makes no difference how perfect your speech is
if you're not focusing on your audience.
It's all about them, it's not about you.
It's about how you want to make them feel.
I have a whole video on what will my audience think
and you can click on it up here.
And I have a lot of other videos about public speaking
that will definitely apply to you as a non-native speaker.
And I'm going to link to quite a few of them
here in the description.
But also feel free to just browse my YouTube channel
and see which videos may help you.
But remember, the focus is on your audience, not on you.
Once you shift your focus from yourself to your audience,
and all you're thinking about is how I can make them feel,
how I can transform them, how I can give them the best of me
and the best of the information and experience
that I can give them during this particular moment in time.
If you only focus on that then, truthfully,
your accent won't matter.
The fact that English is not your first language
won't matter.
If you give all of you to your audience,
and focus only on them, you will be a great public speaker.

Why is the Queen unwell? What public event has she missed? - Duration: 3:02.The 92-year-old is known for her strong constitution but in recent years has suffered occasional heavy colds, sometimes forcing her to stand down from royal duties
2018 has been a particularly busy year for the head of monarch with two new great-grandchildren - Prince Louis and Zara Tindall's daughter Lena Elizabeth - and the wedding of Harry and Meghan
In May, the Queen had eye surgery to remove a cataract, prior to attending her grandson Prince Harry's wedding to Meghan Markle at Windsor Castle

"Her Majesty will be represented by The Duke of Kent as Grand Master of the Order

Philanthropist 'ashamed' by public's reaction to homeless during 24-hour sleepout - Duration: 7:38.Philanthropist 'ashamed' by public's reaction to homeless during 24-hour sleepout
A hair stylist and philanthropist who spent 24 hours sleeping rough in Brisbane's CBD says he is "disgusted" with how the public treats homeless people.
Jak Vaessen, who has raised more than $1 million for local charities, said his sleepout was in response to this month's Vinnies CEO Sleepout.
Instead of bunking in with the city's leaders at the Brisbane Powerhouse for a night, he sat in front of the Treasury Casino to raise funds for New Farm's 3rd Space homeless shelter.
He said what he saw and experienced over the weekend left him in shock.
"There were at least 10 women asleep in the street on Saturday night around the casino and a woman with half her pants hanging down laying on the footpath," he said.
"Not one person helped her.
"[People] demand a safe Australia for all women and then step over a woman lying in the street.
Friends and supporters arrived periodically to wish Mr Vaessen luck, but he could only accept food or drink from strangers.
He said he was surprised that only one stranger stopped to offer him help.
"I felt embarrassed and ashamed because of the way people looked at me.
"They think that when you're homeless you're either are a drug addict or an alcoholic.
"In my 17 years working with the homeless that's a very small percentage.
Mr Vaessen was invited to a homeless shelter to have a hot breakfast on Saturday morning but said he lacked the energy to walk there after a night spent sitting on cold concrete pathways.
"I was hungry, I had dry lips and a dry throat, and it was only for one day," he said.
"I just have so much admiration for homeless people and how they survive mentally, physically and spiritually.
"They have to put up with abuse from the public and they don't retaliate, they just have to take it on the chin.
Mr Vaessen said the $20,000 he raised would go to 3rd Space to provide meals, hot showers and a place for the homeless to rest.
He said above all the sleepout made him realise how lonely life was on the streets.
"Don't look away from these people.
A bit of empathy and a bit of compassion would go a long way and it doesn't cost you anything.".
Sleeping rough to prove a point.
Mr Vaessen told ABC Radio Brisbane he named the project the Joe Blow I'm Not a CEO Sleepout in response to St Vincent De Paul's annual homelessness fundraiser.
The Vinnies CEO Sleepout asks business leaders to sleep rough for a night to raise awareness and money to "break the cycle of homelessness and poverty in Australia".
There's evidence to show the CEO sleepout has effected social change, but Mr Vaessen said he believed it was too far removed from what people living on the streets experienced on a daily basis.
"I'd love to take a group of CEOs out for two full days and let them walk in the city and see people's reactions to them when they look like a homeless person," he said.
"That's what makes change.
Anti-Poverty Network spokesperson Miles Whitaker protested at this month's CEO Sleepout in Brisbane and said there needed to be a more nuanced conversation around the struggles facing the homeless at such events.
"We're looking at it and seeing security guards and fences and portable toilets.
cars coming and going and food being delivered," he said.
"The homeless in Brisbane aren't getting that.
They're living on park benches and in doorways in the bitter cold and they don't have security guards watching over them.".
Vinnies commits to 'colder, harsher' experiences.
Vinnies Queensland chief executive Peter Maher said the organisation's sleepout events in Brisbane and the Gold Coast raised a record-breaking $1.
5 million.
He said CEOs slept in a gusty wind corridor in nine-degree temperatures at Brisbane Powerhouse, formerly a derelict building used by the city's homeless sleeping rough.
"Vinnies CEO Sleepout can't ever replicate the real and confronting environment a homeless person endures every night," Mr Maher said.
"Its intention is to give people the opportunity to reflect on the issue of homelessness in our community, empathise, and raise vital funds for Vinnies homelessness services.
Mr Maher said participants heard from two people who had experienced homelessness and were invited to walk a mile in their shoes by taking on a persona and going through the motions of seeking support and finding a bed for the night.
He said Vinnies was committed to giving CEOs a "colder, harsher and harder" experience every year to drive fundraising efforts.

The first criminal, 39-year-old Cai Liqun, was found guilty of selling methamphetamine and magu
The latter is a mixture of methamphetamine and caffeine, and is a relatively new type of drug in China
Cai bought the drugs by post before selling them on multiple occasions between September and November in 2015, said the court
The other criminal, 36-year-old Huang Zhengye, was found guilty of transporting and selling methamphetamine
He was caught in possession of 4,749.8 grams (10.47 pounds) of methamphetamine and 71,100 yuan (£8,143) in relation to drug dealing in September 2015, according to the court
The death sentences and the orders of the execution had been made by the Supreme People's Court, according to Haikou Intermediate People's Court
'Now I announce, take Cai Liqun and Huang Zhenye to the execution ground and carry out the execution by shooting,' announced a female judge on the sports ground
The two courts also gave first trials to 17 other drug dealers involving in eight different cases during the same event
Among them, eight of them were given death sentences or death sentences with reprieve, according to chinacourt
org, citing China News. It's not uncommon for a Chinese court to give death sentences to criminals in front of a large crowd - sometimes as many as thousands of people
The authority aims to use the form to warn the public against committing crimes, especially drug trafficking
Verdicts and sentences for the criminals are normally made beforehand, and the judge would simply announce them to the masses
Spectators at yesterday's event appeared to support public death sentencing.Pan Hui, a teacher from the local Yunlong Middle School, told China News that such events could help 'educate' and 'frighten' the students, and they could also make the students fearful of committing crimes
'Our school has been carrying out anti-drug educational campaigns constantly to keep the students away from drugs,' said teacher Pan
However, concerns have been expressed in the past towards China's public death sentencing
Last December, the Chinese media called a similar rally in southern Chinese city Lufeng 'inhumane' and 'insulting'
A columnist, named Shen Bin, called for an immediate end on such rallies.Shen said though the local authority's purpose was to scare the local suspects and boost sense of social security, they shouldn't break humanity's bottom line which was protected by the law
Shen argued that China's Public Security Bureau issued a regulation in 1988, which prohibited courts from publicly shaming criminals
Commenting on a different rally in Shanwei city in last June, William Nee at the Amnesty International said the event was 'tragic' and 'barbaric'

Public service shake up promotes bureaucrat found guilty of maladministration - Duration: 4:39.Public service shake up promotes bureaucrat found guilty of maladministration
Michael Buchan has been named the interim head of the state's Housing Authority.
In October 2015, the Independent Commission Against Corruption delivered its findings into the sale of publicly owned land at Gillman in Adelaide's north-western suburbs, to private consortium Adelaide Capital Partners for the purpose of building a gas and mining industry hub, without an open tender.
While the ICAC cleared former Premier Jay Weatherill and Treasurer Tom Koutsantonis, it made findings of maladministration against Renewal SA's then chief operating officer Michael Buchan and then chief executive Fred Hansen.
At the time, the Liberals said the response to the inquiry had been a "virtual whitewash with no one prepared to accept responsibility", with Mr Buchan "moved sideways" into another senior position in the department.
"They have tried to walk away from any responsibility, and all we see is someone now being moved sideways," then opposition treasury spokesman Rob Lucas said in January 2016.
But Mr Lucas today said that Mr Buchan had paid the penalty for the adverse ICAC finding, and it did not prevent him from being promoted in the future.
"If you do something that is judged to be not correct, you suffer the consequences and the penalty or the penance, and I think the same rule of thumb can be applied to senior public servants," Mr Lucas said.
Speaking to media today, Mr Marshall defended the appointment. "Look, the reality is we've made a decision to appoint and interim head for the new authority — Michael Buchan — he'll serve in that role," Mr Marshall said.
"Ultimately we're going out to the market to get the very best person for the permanent role.
Mr Marshall has announced he had appointed several chief executives to government departments, including Buchan, who will head the new agency amalgamating the functions of Housing SA and Renewal SA.
He also promoted experienced public servant Paul Heithersay to head the state's Energy and Mining Department, former Investment Attraction Agency head Mike Hnyda to lead the Trade, Tourism and Investment Department and Kylie Taylor to be the chief of the Office for Recreation, Sport and Racing.
The appointments come as the State Government announces a suite of changes across departments and boards, with a reshuffle of the public service to kick in from July.
Mr Marshall is yet to announce who will take the reigns at his own department, with Public Sector Employment commissioner Erma Ranieri acting in the role since the initial chief executive cull in the aftermath of the state election.
New SA Health chief executive Chris McGowan's start date was brought forward from November to May 7. Purge from government boards continues.
The announcement of new chief executives came as the Liberal State Government continued its purge from boards, targeting high-profile Labor appointees including a former minister, the wife of a former federal immigration minister and a radio broadcaster.
The Housing Trust Board will undergo significant change, including the replacement of presiding member Mary Patetsos, the wife of former Labor MP Nick Bolkus, with former Homestart Finance chief executive Gary Storkey.
Other board members to not be reappointed include former MP Greg Crafter, media personality Amanda Blair, and Playford Council chief executive Mal Hemmerling.
Peter Vaughan, the former head of Business SA who lost his position on the TAFE board last year, will also not be appointed to the SACE board.

Wighton was initially facing nine charges related to a series of incidents near the now-closed Academy nightclub in Canberra's CBD on February 3
It is understood he was out with friends celebrating his birthday. Today, Wighton pleaded guilty to six charges in the ACT Magistrates Court today, including assault and public urination, while prosecutors dropped several of the other charges
Wighton had pleaded not guilty to all of the charges during a court appearance in April, and prosecutors flagged their intention to produce CCTV evidence and call multiple witnesses
The Raiders squad is in Queensland, preparing for Saturday night's clash with the Brisbane Broncos
Earlier this week Wighton was named in the starting team for the Lang Park clash
He trained with them on Wednesday and immediately flew back up to rejoin them after his court appearance, but it is not known if the club still intends to play him
Wighton is the regular starting full-back for the Raiders, debuting with the club in 2012 and making 130 appearances
The Raiders will now put a case to the NRL integrity commission. Both the Canberra Raiders and NRL have been approached for comment
Wighton has been referred to the ACT Indigenous Circle Court for an assessment before he is sentenced
