Pope Francis reaches out to hug Cardinal Archbishop emeritus Theodore McCarrick at the Cathedral of St

(Jonathan Newton / The Washington Post) The former archbishop of Washington, Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, has been removed from ministry in response to allegations that he sexually abused a teen 50 years ago while he was a priest in New York

McCarrick, 87, was a well-known church leader in global affairs. He had said in a statement months ago that he had been made aware of teenager's allegation of sexual abuse while he was a priest in New York almost 50 years ago

He was archbishop of Washington from 2001 to 2006. McCarrick said that while he maintains his innocence, "In obedience I accept the decision of The Holy See, that I no longer exercise any public ministry

" Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York investigated the allegation, engaging the review board of the Archdiocese of New York, according to a statement from the Archdiocese of Washington

In his statement, McCarrick said he was "shocked" by the allegations and had cooperated fully with investigators

"My sadness was deepened when I was informed that the allegations had been determined credible and substantiated," he said

He said he had "absolutely no recollection of this reported abuse, and believe in my innocence

I am sorry for the pain the person who brought the charges has gone through, as well as for the scandal such charges cause our people

Organizer of deadly Virginia rally plans follow-up in Washington

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The organizer of a far-right rally last year in Charlottesville, Virginia, that turned deadly is planning to hold a rally near the White House in Washington on the first anniversary of the event, federal officials said on Wednesday.

Jason Kessler filed an application last month and it has been approved to hold what he described as a "white civil rights rally" on Aug.

11-12, although a permit has not yet been issued, Mike Litterst, a spokesman for the National Park Service, said in an email.

Kessler organized the Aug. 12, 2017 "Unite the Right" rally in Charlottesville that drew international attention when a suspected white nationalist crashed his car into a crowd of counterprotesters, killing one woman.

U.S. President Donald Trump inflamed tensions when he said both sides were to blame for the violence.

The rally in Charlottesville, home to the flagship campus of the University of Virginia, followed months of protests over the city's proposed removal of a statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee.

Kessler previously has denied the Virginia event was intended to provoke violence, contending the counterprotesters sparked the fighting and blaming police for failing to protect his group. He did not respond to a request for comment on Wednesday.

In a redacted copy of the application posted online, Kessler estimated 400 people would attend the Washington rally, and added he would work with law enforcement during the event.

Kessler also has applied to hold an event in Charlottesville, but that was denied due to concerns over public safety, according to Virginia ABC TV affiliate WSET.

Catholic cardinal in Washington accused of sex abuse.

  The Vatican has asked the retired archbishop of Washington, D.C., Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, to cease public ministry after finding he was credibly accused of sexually abusing a teenager almost 50 years ago, the archdiocese and McCarrick said Wednesday.

McCarrick is among the highest-ranking of the more than 6,700 U.S.

Roman Catholic clerics to be accused of sexually abusing children since the churchs sex abuse scandal broke in 2002, according to BishopAccountability.org, a private group that tracks the allegations.

McCarrick, 87, was accused of sexually abusing a teenager when he was a priest in New York, he said in a statement.

He said that he was innocent, but an investigation by the Church found the allegations to be credible and substantiated, the archdiocese said in a statement.

The Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, at the direction of our Holy Father, Pope Francis, has instructed Cardinal McCarrick that he is to refrain from any public ministry or activity until a definite decision is made, the archdiocese said.

McCarrick said he would follow the Vaticans instruction.

The clergy sex abuse scandal erupted in Boston and rippled around the globe as abuse was found in many countries, costing the church billions of dollars in settlements and undercutting its moral authority.

In addition to the thousands of priests accused of sexually abusing or assaulting children, some high-powered church leaders including the former Archbishop of Boston, Cardinal Bernard Law, were accused of allowing accused priests to continue to minister to children.

Law died in December.   .
