How do you find your purpose in life?
You know, you meet some people who just know and have always known what they want to do
– what career they want, where they want to live etc.
Take me for example, from a very early age I always knew that I wanted to be a comedian
– and my family used to laugh at me….well they aren't laughing now….
Anyway, and on the other hand there are people – and you may be one of them – who struggle
to figure out what it is they want to be doing with their life, who struggle to really feel
like they are in their element.
I'd like to share with you a tool I learned from Rabbi Dr Akiva Tatz which is very useful
in trying to determine what your life purpose ought to be.
He suggested taking out a pen and paper and drawing a big circle on it – I'll wait
for you to go and get one, go on.
Now – inside the circle you should write all aspects of your character, all your talents
– more than just the kind of things you might get on a school report card – this
should be a comprehensive analysis of your personality type – are you warm and empathetic
– do people pour their hearts out to you?, or are you more talented with machinery than
being a people person, are you talented in music or sport?, are you determined & disciplined?
– and then outside the circle write down everything you are not – personal traits
perhaps you wish you had, but don't – things you are not very good at doing or being.
Study your circle.
You are looking at a picture of you.
The real you – not the one other people say you are, not the one you fantasize to
be – but the real you.
Now, if you were placed on a building site and given a bag of tools and you weren't
sure what you were meant to be doing – all youd need to do was look inside the bag to
figure out what your job is.
And the same is true here – look at your circle – these are your tools – and that
will clue you in to what you are meant to be doing in this world.
Never think you lack the tools you need for life – either you haven't discovered your
tools yet (and yes sometimes it can take a while to discover all your talents) or you
are mistaken about your life purpose.
Everything you need to fulfil your potential exists within you.
It's critical though, not to envy a role that someone else has when you could never
achieve that.
It's like when you see those people appear on the X Factor where they are convinced they're
brilliant but actually have voices that are, well, terrible – not everyone can be a pop
singer – and perhaps much less people would aspire to become celebrities if we didn't
live in a world that glorified them so much.
But once you are clear on your circle, then you will lose any sense of jealousy because
you'll recognise your own worth.
And once we have our circle what do we do with it?
Childhood and adolescence is the time for exploring our circle.
Adulthood is the time when we draw our circle to a close and begin our life's journey
of cultivating our talents – our inner circle.
Our purpose comes where we take our inner circle and we use it for the betterment of
our world.
That's how you discover your purpose.
As Rabbi Jonathan Sacks eloquently put it – Where what you want to do meets what needs
to be done.
That is, in a nutshell, is how you discover your unique purpose in this world.
Good luck!
