My name is Teon, I'm an automotive technician.

I'm 31 years old and my annual salary is $63,000 a year.

I word at City Auto Body as well as All Georgia Towing.

That's a towing company here in Atlanta, Georgia.

First off, City Auto Body is a great place to work.

I've been here for quite some time now.

It's a family owned business of my uncles, my grandfather,

it's a beautiful place to work.

Money was not a piece of what brought me to working on cars

to being a mechanic.

My first car that I ever worked on was a Isuzu Rodeo.

You know, my father and I,

we changed the brakes in the front yard of our driveway

and that's actually what drew me to want to work on cars.

Being an automotive mechanic is more so for me,

is more so of a hobby because I enjoy it.

It's like an adrenaline rush, you know, to fix a vehicle.

So when a car come in, they make tools, a diagnostic tools.

If you have your check engine light on,

you hook that tool up to the bottom of the dashboard

and it reads off whatever the issue is.

That's the easy part.

The hard part is when you don't have that tool.

When your car comes in and the wheel's leaning over,

they don't make a tool for that.

(chuckling)

You gotta know exactly what you're doing.

You gotta know the correct bolt size,

the correct tool you need to be able to take the wheel off,

it can be complicated.

But if you enjoy what you do,

that complication is definitely worth going through.

When a vehicle comes into the shop, first thing,

I have to look at that car.

I have to look at it as if it was mine.

What do I have to do to get that car back to perfect shape?

So I do an overall walkthrough of the vehicle.

Asses the overall problems.

Let's say, if a car came in with front end damage

and you know, front end damage you gotta get your headlights

and depending on where it was hit,

you may have structural damage to the wheel.

So if those things need to be taken care of,

you gotta jack the car up.

You know, get the car up off all fours

just so you can have a level ground so you can see it.

Take the tire off, take the fenders off,

take the broken pieces off.

And then if it's bent, put it on the frame machine.

You know, you pull the dents out, you pull the frame back

so that way you can be able to make sure

everything lines up together.

When you remove your bumpers, your lights, your tires,

you find things that you didn't think was broken.

You know, so electrical wires,

you gotta put your wires back together,

you gotta put your headlights back in.

You just have to make sure that everything is secure.

I will put in eight hours at City Auto Body.

Then I will go drive the tow truck for Georgia Towing

for about 12 hours.

Overall, it's fun and it's definitely exciting too

because it's an adrenaline rush, you know.

Like I said, being able to pick up the cars

and bring them back to the same place where you work,

just overall is just fun.

I make about 45 over at City Auto Body

and about 18 driving the tow truck for All Georgia Towing.

That's my annual salary.

But you can make up to about 80,000-90,000 annually

with continuing certification.

Going to trade school.

Continued education is definitely important.

The technology is growing, you can hook up your phone

to your radio now, you know, you can, man,

it's so much you can do now you can talk to your car.

That's where school comes to play on the electrical side

because you have to learn what goes where

to be able to fit today's technology.

What other things you would need to be a great mechanic

is you definitely have to have the right tools for the job.

You have to have the passion for the job.

You have to be a people person because when people come in,

they are not always the happiest.

They want to feel comfortable knowing that when they leave

their car here, it's gonna be safe, for one,

and it's gonna be fixed, for two.

So they want it in the best shape possible if not better.

You know, seeing my customers smile is the best part ever

you know, for the job.

And then seeing the car drive off the lot,

that's another great point too, you know.

When that car drives off, once again, I can see it,

I did that.

Drinking Alcohol Can Raise Cancer Risk. How Much Is Too Much?

A little bit of alcohol has been shown to be protective of heart health.

But how does drinking influence cancer risk?.

A new study finds that light drinkers have the lowest combined risk of developing cancer and dying prematurely — even lower than people who dont drink at all.

But heres the rub: In this study, light drinking is defined as one to five drinks per week.

It seems to reassure light drinkers, says study co-author Andrew Kunzmann, a researcher at Queens University Belfast.

Researchers studied about 100,000 adults who lived in cities across the U.S., including Birmingham, Ala.; Boulder, Colo.; Los Angeles; and Pittsburgh.

The participants were in their mid-50s to early 70s when the study began, and they each completed a survey about their alcohol consumption.

Researchers tracked their health for about nine years, and they found that the more a person drank, the higher their risk of getting cancer and dying.

We definitely think [the findings] give a bigger picture of whats going on, Kunzmann says.

For this study, he collaborated with researchers at the National Cancer Institute in the U.S.

The study is published in the scientific journal PLOS Medicine.

The study adds to the evidence that cancer risk may rise when people drink more than one drink per day, but the increase is modest.

Moderate drinkers in the study had about a 10 percent increased risk of getting cancer.

Not surprisingly, the study finds that heavy drinkers are most at risk.

For instance, men who drank three or more drinks per day were three to four times more likely to develop cancer of the esophagus and liver cancer.

Other alcohol-related cancers include colorectal cancer and breast cancer in women.

This study reinforces [the evidence] that people who drink a lot have higher rates of cancer and higher rates of dying from those cancers, says Noelle LoConte, an oncologist and associate professor at the University of Wisconsin.

She was not involved in the study, but NPR asked her to review the evidence.

The study comes at a time when the American Society of Clinical Oncology, a group of cancer doctors, is trying to spread awareness about the risks of excessive alcohol consumption.

LoConte is the lead author of the groups recent statement calling for policies aimed at reducing alcohol consumption.

Were not proponents of complete abstinence.

There probably is an amount of drinking thats OK, LoConte says.

But from a cancer-prevention standpoint, drinking the least amount of alcohol possible would be the best strategy..

Many studies have pointed to the risks of excessive drinking, yet we do not think that most Americans are aware of the link between alcohol and cancer, LoConte says.

Most people know that too much sun exposure increases the risk of skin cancer and that smoking increases the risk of lung cancer.

But a survey done by ASCO last year found that 7 in 10 adults did not recognize drinking alcohol as a risk factor for cancer.

When it comes to the lifestyle factors and habits that people can control — or change — to reduce their risk of disease, alcohol is pretty high up on the list.

Alcohol is estimated to be the third-largest modifiable risk factor for cancer, says Susan Gapstur, an epidemiologist with the American Cancer Society.

About 19 percent of cancers are linked to smoking, 8 percent are linked to obesity or excess body weight — and about 5 percent are linked to alcohol.

Alcohol is also estimated to be the third-largest contributor to overall cancer deaths in both men and women, Gapstur says.

Strikingly, alcohol is estimated to account for 39,060 breast cancers [in the U.S.] per year in women, she says.

One step toward cutting back is to be more aware — and more realistic — about how much you drink.

The first thing we need to talk about is: What is a drink? says LoConte.

A drink is a single shot of liquor, 5 ounces of wine or 12 ounces of beer.

Its easy to consume more than you realize.

Some mixed drinks contain multiple shots of liquor, and some craft beers have higher concentrations of alcohol.

Current guidelines recommend that women consume no more than one drink per day, and men consume no more than two drinks per day.

But LoConte says this may turn out to be too much.

I think this study, as I reviewed it, looked like a safer amount would be one drink a day for everybody, regardless of gender, LoConte says.

At least thats what the study suggests.

More research is underway.

The One Nation leader confirmed on Thursday morning her two-senator team would support the Government's full seven-year plan

Senator Hanson conceded it was a gamble to support the entire package, having previously argued the third and final stage was unaffordable but said she was now more optimistic

"I've actually now decided to support the Government in the tax cuts which the Australian people need," Senator Hanson told reporters

"It was the only fair thing to do." In the Senate, Labor and the Greens voiced their anger about the way in which the government had shut down debate

Labor's Penny Wong said it was all about the coalition's "political timetable", ahead of five by-elections on July 28, rather than sound policy or fairness

Recent polls have shown a majority of voters disagree with the tax cut for the most wealthy but support the first two parts of the package

Labor frontbencher Doug Cameron tore shreds off One Nation for siding with the Government

"This decision by Pauline Hanson to support some of the highest income earners in the country just demonstrates how out of touch Pauline Hanson is," the senator told reporters

Under the first of three stages, low- and middle-income earners would get tax relief of up to $530 a year from July 1

Independent Senator Tim Storer issued a scathing attack on the Centre Alliance party, formerly the Nick Xenophon Team, of which he was once a member

He said the minor party's two senators had sided with the Government to guillotine debate, soon after voting to scrap the package's final stage

"Today, Centre Alliance turned its back on the principles central to Nick Xenophon and the party he started," Senator Storer said
