The Duke of Edinburgh is turning 97 today, Sunday, June 10.  Phillip, who is married to 92-year-old Queen Elizabeth II, will celebrate the occasion in private, a Buckingham Palace spokesperson confirmed to Sky News

A gun salute will mark his birthday in Hyde Park at 12pm on Monday, June 11, by the King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery

Today also marks his first birthday since he retired from public service last year

He was absent from the Trooping the Colour ceremony yesterday, which was held in honour of the Queen's official birthday

Prince Phillip has not been known to celebrate his birthdays in public.  The Duke has attended official engagements as normal instead, regardless of whether they fell on the date of his birthday

He has kept a low profile following a hip replacement operation last April only appearing in public briefly at the Windsor Horse Trials last month and for his grandson Prince Harry's wedding to Meghan Markle on May 20

Phillip is believed to spend much of his time at Windsor and also at his Wood Farm cottage on the Sandringham estate

However, he has appeared in public three times since his operation. Phillip appeared at the Royal Windsor Horse show twice, where he watched the events from behind the wheel of his landrover

He was also a guest at the royal wedding of Meghan Markle, 36, and Prince Harry, 33, last month
