BREAKING: Trump ROCKS Washington DC with a Declaration about his Executive Power

President Trump took to Twitter on Monday morning to unequivocally assert that he has

the "absolute right" to pardon himself should Robert Mueller's "witch hunt" attempt to bring

charges against him.

But, the president added, he shouldn't have to because he's done "nothing wrong."

"As has been stated by numerous legal scholars, I have the absolute right to PARDON myself,

but why would I do that when I have done nothing wrong?" said Trump.

"In the meantime, the never ending Witch Hunt, led by 13 very Angry and Conflicted Democrats

(& others) continues into the mid-terms!"Trump's comments were in part prompted by the publication

by The New York Times of a confidential letter sent by the president's lawyers in January

to Mueller arguing that the president's broad executive authority means he cannot be charged

with obstruction of justice.

The Times reports:

President Trump's lawyers have for months quietly waged a campaign to keep the special

counsel from trying to force him to answer questions in the investigation into whether

he obstructed justice, asserting that he cannot be compelled to testify and arguing in a confidential

letter that he could not possibly have committed obstruction because he has unfettered authority

over all federal investigations.

In a brash assertion of presidential power, the 20-page letter — sent to the special

counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, and obtained by The New York Times — contends that the

president cannot illegally obstruct any aspect of the investigation into Russia's election

meddling because the Constitution empowers him to, "if he wished, terminate the inquiry,

or even exercise his power to pardon."

On Sunday, New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani told ABC's "This Week" that he thinks Trump

"probably does" have the power to pardon himself.

"He probably does," Giuliani told host George Stephanopoulis on Sunday.

"He has no intention of pardoning himself but he probably — not to say he can't.

I mean, that — that's another really interesting constitutional argument, can the president

pardon himself?

It would be an open question.

I think it would probably get answered, by gosh, that's what the constitution says

and if you want to change it, change it.

But yes."

Though Giuliani expressed confidence that Trump could "probably" do it, he admitted

that the "political ramifications" of doing so would be "tough."

"Pardoning other people is one thing.

Pardoning yourself is another," he said.

"Other presidents have pardoned people in circumstances like this both — both in their

administration and sometimes the next president, even of a different party will come along

and pardon."

Washington Trails Association | Creating Champions for Trails - Duration: 1:01.

Having access to trails is really important for me.

Physically it's good exercise, emotionally it helps me clear my head.

My favorite memory, or at least the one I turn to all the time is the time when I realized

that hiking was my passion, and that was out in the Olympic National Park up on the High Divide,

and I was looking out at the rainforest below and the Pacific Ocean just beyond and that

sense of being this place that was so much bigger than me, and so amazing, made me realize that

hiking is my love, and I want to do it as much as possible and I want to share it with

others.

WTA is really important because we are the place where almost any hiker in Washington

can come and have their voice amplified.

At a time when trails and public lands need champions, Washington Trails Association brings

hikers together to make a lasting difference.

Join Washington Trails Association and become a champion for trails.

Opinion | Sarah Sanders's White House briefings are maddening. And valuable. - Duration: 2:12.

The president's made his position

on this extremely clear.

It is something the president has been very clear on.

The president has been very clear what his position is,

and the president's position was very clearly stated.

I would be happy to answer it

if you would stop talking long enough to let me do that.

The president has made his position crystal-clear

on this topic.

Can you clarify the degree

to which the president weighed in?

He certainly didn't dictate, but, you know, he --

like I said, he weighed in,

offered suggestion like any father would do.

Do you want to correct the record

on your statement from August

when you said he certainly didn't dictate?

Once again, I'm not gonna go into detail

and go into a back-and-forth.

Do you think your statement in August was accurate?

Your statement, not his --

was your statement accurate or inaccurate?

Again, I know you want to get me into a back-and-forth

with you on this conversation -- -No, going back to

before that you said something.

We just want to know if it was accurate or not.

Was your statement accurate?

I know your goal was to engage me in a conversation

about matters dealing with the outside counsel,

and I'm not gonna do that today.

About the outside counsel, you said something from the podium.

Was it accurate or not? That's all we want to know.

Again, I work day in, day out.

Why should Americans be able to trust

that what they hear from this White House is always the truth?

Once again, I don't know

how many times I have to address this,

but I work every single day to give you accurate

and up-to-date information, and I'm gonna continue to do that.

Frankly, I think my credibility's

probably higher than the media's.
