Hello and welcome, I am O Jogador Intemporal, let's talk about Dauntless.
Dauntless is an action game where you choose a mission or monster (behemoth as they're
called) and are then taken to an island, where you are to slay the foe, solo or with a group
of up to 4 people.
To do the slaying you can choose one of five weapons, each with its advantages and weakness
for either solo or group play.
I played it for a few weeks, and before we move on, please know that this is an open
beta, and everything I say will be based on this beta product, which will change a lot
as time moves on, nothing is final yet.
I also want to make this clear, I have played many Monster Hunter games on consoles, from
which Dauntless borrows a lot, and to finally have a proper monster hunting game on PC is
amazing, not to mention this is a free game... and that's why I can't help but compare
the two.
Yes, that's not really fair to compare a free game from a small studio, to a well stablished
series from one of the best studios out there, but the truth is, Monster Hunter World is
soon coming to PC (or may even be out by the time you're watching this) and Dauntless
has to try and keep its players hooked somehow.
I will start with the things it does right.
The gameplay goes first: the combat is solid, the attacks and movement are really well done,
you can feel each blow, each attack, each action, nothing is worse in a game than not
feeling control over your character, and thankfully, that is something to praise here, every weapon
feels good using.
Because it's still in beta, Dauntless uses the trick of reusing behemoths with new attributes,
like adding elements to previously neutral behemoths, and if you're anything like me
you may think that you'll be fighting the same monsters with different colors... and
while that is kind of true in a literal way, they've done an amazing job at making the
hunting experience very different, so different that you won't be comparing them and instead
will be trying to survive and learn its new patterns, this was a very good surprise which
in a free game that is ever evolving, knowing they can make new experiences from used assets
is comforting when thinking about the future.
The quest system is simple, it's easy to see what to do next, and the learning curve
is really well done, the only spike being at the last 2 behemoths and Heroic modes that
so far, I wasn't able to complete... yet.
The visual and effects are amazing, unless you dislike this somewhat cartoonish art style.
Now let me tell you about something bad, and this is subjective.
The weapons and armor are lacking in a number of ways.
First, your armor needs to be replaced too much.
It doesn't matter how much you've grinded for your current equipment, the next armor
will be significantly better to the point you regret spending all the effort to upgrade it.
And if you don't, the damage received will be way higher.
Because you can hunt with friends, weapon upgrades can be postponed, but they suffer
the same, lower rank weapons getting completely useless once you get better ones.
You might be thinking well, why would you need them anyway now that you've got a better one?
Because I really enjoy collecting.
Monster Hunter to me is as much about collecting equipment as it is about hunting, I like to
look at my inventory and know that while there may be a best option, I could choose many
others and still have an enjoyable time, which is not true right now in Dauntless, at least
until you reach the endgame.
In the endgame, every weapon and armor have the same base stats, allowing you to mix and
match for the preferred combo of skills, but that still makes everything you've done
so far useless, because if you don't upgrade you won't stand a chance at the last behemoths.
And while you can craft new and improved versions of previous armor, they look the same, giving
you no visual pleasure for the efforts.
Again, I wasn't able to beat any Heroic behemoth and I HAVE the best gear I can get
before slaying them.
There's the internet problem, being an online game, your hunt is highly affected either
by your connection or by the servers, which really takes away from the fun because it
doesn't really matter if you know how to evade some attack or if you know how to position
yourself to avoid some kind of damage, if there's any kind of problem anywhere you
will suffer what's called a phantom hit, where on your client you've avoided a hit
and are attacking, until the server says otherwise and suddenly you are laying on the ground
with much less health than before.
Or sometimes the behemoth will glitch and get all distorted, preventing you from reading
his body movement and get hit by sudden attacks... but these aren't really a problem until
the last behemoths, when they might as well stop you from playing, which I say from experience.
Moving into random fun stuff, you can jump on goats... repeatedly.
There's this mysterious turtle eating mysterious apples.
Look.
At.
It.
Now a quick overview of the weapons.
The Sword is your starting weapon, and for a reason, it's really good.
It's strong, fast, has a lot of mobility, you can easily stop attacking, reposition
and resume the offensive.
It has a good enough reach, really easy to cut tails and break parts, and can also stagger
behemoths by hitting their heads.
The attack speed also helps with adding elemental damage.
The Axe is very powerful, you can charge some attacks and deal a very nice extra damage,
and if you do that enough, you are able to unleash a power attack which gives you a buff
that increases your damage, and not only that you can also repeat it 2 other times, giving
you a level 3 buff for a significant higher damage output.
As you can imagine, to keep it going you need a very offensive playstyle.
If you charge an attack to the highest charge and unleash it at the right time, you get
an armor that prevents interruption during it and lowers the damage received, but that
of course requires a lot of skill with the weapon and with each behemoth.
The Chain blades are the best at speed and mobility, really fast close-range attacks,
a very quick dash to get in and out or reposition yourself, a few medium-range attacks, the
ability to jump into or out of combat.
Due to the attack speed, it is also the best at dealing elemental damage.
The Hammer is the best at dealing stagger damage, you can easily knock out behemoths
by consistently hitting their head or legs.
There is a caveat, that you cannot cut tails with it.
There's also this problem currently that if you jump and land in any behemoths, you
can't attack until you hit the ground, taking away part of the usefulness of jumps to close gaps.
It requires some practice, you can empower each blow, and recharge after each attack,
and then unleash all shells at once, but your stamina will be almost always empty if trying
to be optimal.
The War pike is really hard to use, it has a low range and doesn't offer much for solo
playing, but becomes something else at the Heroic difficulty.
On Heroic difficulty, all behemoths deal more damage and have more defense, not to mention
a number of mutators that make the hunt more difficult.
Thing is, war pikes so far are the only weapons that can deal what's called a Wound damage,
which works like a debuff, increasing the damage dealt by all slayers of the group.
So, while I wouldn't recommend it for solo playing, it should be part of a group when
playing Heroic quests.
I think that covers everything, Dauntless already offers a lot for a free game, and
I will be following the development for sure, I'm looking forward to playing it with more
of my friends in the future.
While they have lots to improve, being able to have so much fun in a free game on its
open beta stages just goes to show how serious the developers are about it and how many more
good things we can expect.
To download and play the game, go to their website.
Which I will link in the description.
And for more information you can visit the Reddit subforums, for some very nice stuff.
That's it for now, I hope you enjoyed, if you want more videos like this you know what to do.
Thanks for watching and hope to see you again!
