Hi! My name is Travis Gray and this is Travis Finds Out, from
Regenerative Road Trip today! We are going to be more learning about a cool art
form called Suminagashi. Lots of cultures have a paper marbling style of
art, but historians think that Suminagashi started it all.
it was invented in Japan around 1150 ad was used to create backgrounds for poems
and other paintings translated to English it means floating ink which is
exactly what you do you're floating the ink on water letting it swirl around a
bit and then soaking the ink onto paper to make amazing natural art that's never
the same twice while the Japanese used it to write poetry is nowadays can use
the rural paper to write notes to people drop presents or just leave it like it
is as amazing anymore Bodrum it's considerable fashioned yeah people were
fascinated they were doing it when we were there when you get down to it and
assuming gosh he is a really simple first thing you're going to need to do
is take a bowl of ink you can choose whatever color you want I'm using red so
you're going to take it the bowl and squeeze it a little bit and let it do
that I also put the colors inside Asian yeah I don't have to do that if you get
bored it's a good way to start so you are
color be more sellable you can bring it way down to the water surface that's
perfect now whatever to decide well maybe yellow
inside okay what's up you can accomplish it a little faster it's really up to you
black is it's very substantial yeah its strong real into the black now we're
going to take a sheet of paper then we're going to lay the paper flatly on
the piece of on 2d water oh wait a couple seconds okay should be
enough time
pull the paper out and low yeah you know this is your experiment with I'm trying
to be a scientist to see that everything's so good
I'm trying to be excited to see what happens oh of course I think the part of
what you'll see is that no matter what you do it will go into a fractal shape
will go into nature's shape of water the same way like a river the second print
ving Tsun nagashi it's called the ghost print and sometimes it's really pretty
because they can i it won't turn out the same as that because the water is always
moving can you do more than more investors you could go for as long as
you want and then you'll find out when it's over
whoa this is your exquisite masterpiece okay that's somewhat let's pray we can
see it so I think we're Stewart and you're starting it to the end of your
ghost prints here vision we can't write names not until they're totally dry just
a moment or you're gonna have an iron oh yes because the could iron them when
they're done winter driving environment 33 was there totally flat don't forget
you're gonna blow on it since we're inside if you do chew
because you're getting this super cool very delicate lines or anything to break
up this beautiful
Wow really wet for a magazine to reopen if you know the one thing that's always
a little bit annoying is the paper is not actually these it is cool
blender what your your two friends are a little look like you're just saying you
know whatever knows what it sort of looks like you think you know what
simple thing guess when you start with the paper and even lose it I know this
for a really long time I can never get it exactly the way I want but that's
part of it keeps me interested as you can see every time a unique even if you
want to you can't have both of the same
birthday yeah
or what that it's it's probably pulsing turpentine is a repulsive and soap is a
repulsive I also might think that's it okay you can add more swirls by laying
the environments wind like a take care of it
you can also use paintbrushes history up or a trick that this miriam show me you
can blow on it to make your own swirls well you need to
do some nagashi at home is a baking pan through feels about a half an inch up
with water it finds have inks and paper I want to say thank you to miss Miriam
shaken the artist I resins here at I have Fossil Beds
to end to all of our supporters on patreon see you next time on Travis
finds out
you
