Romney says Trump hasnt risen to the mantle of presidency in Washington Post op ed CNNPolitics

"It is well known that Donald Trump was not my choice for the Republican presidential nomination. After he became the nominee, I hoped his campaign would refrain from resentment and name calling. It did not," Romney, the 2012 Republican presidential nominee, wrote in the opinion piece, adding that several of Trumps Cabinet appointments had been "encouraging."

"But, on balance, his conduct over the past two years, particularly his actions this month, is evidence that the President has not risen to the mantle of the office," he wrote.

Romney has been a vocal critic of the President during Trumps campaign and first two years in office, although the two had appeared to mend fences after Trump was elected. They were photographed dining together as Trump mulled making Romney his secretary of state, and the President

Romney wrote in Tuesdays op ed that he agreed with some of the policy changes Trump has championed. "But policies and appointments are only a part of a presidency," he wrote.

"A president should demonstrate the essential qualities of honesty and integrity, and elevate the national discourse with comity and mutual respect. ... And it is in this province where the incumbents shortfall has been most glaring."

Brad Parscale, Trumps 2020 campaign manager, responded to Romneys piece in a tweet Tuesday evening, writing that the incoming senator from Utah "lacked the ability to save this nation" while Trump "has saved it."

"Jealously is a drink best served warm and Romney just proved it. So sad, I wish everyone had the courage Trump had," Parscale wrote.

Romney also said in the piece that Trumps presidency has weakened Americas influence abroad, writing that "Trumps words and actions have caused dismay around the world."

"The world needs American leadership, and it is in Americas interest to provide it," he wrote.

Romney, who is set to take office Thursday, said he looks forward to tackling important issues with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, a Kentucky Republican, as well as other senators, adding that he "will support policies that I believe are in the best interest of the country and my state, and oppose those that are not."

As for Trump, Romney said he does not "intend to comment on every tweet or fault."

"But I will speak out against significant statements or actions that are divisive, racist, sexist, anti immigrant, dishonest or destructive to democratic institutions," he wrote.

How upcoming state laws could make it to Washington next - Duration: 6:25.

AMNA NAWAZ: Earlier, we reported on the number of new laws taking effect today.

Yesterday, I spoke with Reid Wilson of The Hill newspaper, who tracks state politics.

I began our conversation asking him why new rules in specific states matter to the rest

of the country.

REID WILSON, The Hill: Well, over the last 30 years or so, we have seen that what happens

in state capitals today is going to happen in Washington, D.C., tomorrow, whether we're

talking about welfare reform in the 1990s or health care in the 2000s that became the

Affordable Care Act, or now even criminal justice reform.

Over the last decade, we have seen about 30 states pass criminal justice reform efforts

in their state capitals.

And just before they left the U.S. Senate passed, gave final approval to a big sweeping

criminal justice bill here.

So, what happens in these capitals today will happen nationally tomorrow.

AMNA NAWAZ: So, states can lead the way on a lot of these issues.

Let's talk about some of those new laws and what the states are doing.

Let's start with guns and gun control.

What are you watching in the new year?

REID WILSON: So, Democrats won a huge number of state legislative seats in this November's

midterm election.

They won a number of governorships in states where they already controlled state legislative

chambers.

And so what we're going to see is a number of states pushing gun control, gun safety

laws, if you will, what they like to call red flag laws, that is, laws that would prevent

somebody who represents a danger to themselves or somebody else from possessing a gun, allowing

law enforcement to take those away.

And we're going to see those in states like Colorado, New Mexico, states that have not

had a willing Republican governor or Republican legislatures for a long time.

We're going to see a pretty sweeping reform come out of New York, where Democrats have

just regained control for the first time in -- basically in modern history.

AMNA NAWAZ: And some of those changes coming about because the Democrats won those state

legislatures.

Talk to me about marijuana.

What are some of the new laws coming on the books in 2019?

REID WILSON: So, this is fascinating.

Marijuana so far has so far has become legal in a lot of states where citizens get to vote

on ballot measures.

State legislators don't want to be the ones who approve new drugs being legal or something

like that.

But now, given that we're up to 10 states that have come online for recreational use,

state legislatures are actually taking a look.

And Vermont became the first state to pass its own form of legalization through the legislature,

not through the citizens.

A Republican governor signed that law.

Now we're seeing governors in Democratic-controlled states like New Jersey, Illinois, and New

York, and possibly even Rhode Island, all talking about legalizing themselves.

They see how much money these other states are generating in tax revenue.

They want a piece of that pie.

AMNA NAWAZ: So, it's the economy that's driving some of the decisions there.

More on the economy there.

What are some of the other issues on the state level that you're watching?

REID WILSON: Yes.

So, we're taking -- there seems to be a bipartisan push lately to roll back some regulations

on certain types of businesses or jobs.

If you happen to be -- want to become a beautician in a lot of states, you need hundreds of hours

of training before you can get certified.

That works in favor of the people who are already in the market, right?

They're keeping out some competition, but a lot of state legislators on both the Democratic

and Republican sides think that that's unfair, it's too high of a barrier for entry in a

lot of jobs, especially as the U.S. economy becomes much more service-oriented.

So I expect a lot of rollbacks over regulations and on business licensing in the next couple

of years.

AMNA NAWAZ: You mentioned some of the big wins by Democrats and how that changes the

state legislatures, changes their agendas and priorities.

Where else are you looking?

What could some of the other big issue changes be with some of these newly elected Democrats?

REID WILSON: I think California is going to be ground zero for the big sort of liberal

push for whatever agenda the Democrats have this year.

They have a more liberal Democratic governor than the outgoing Governor Jerry Brown in

Gavin Newsom.

They have a huge majority, three-quarters of the seats in both chambers of the state

legislatures.

What we're starting to see right now is a lot of California Democrats saying, we're

going to pause a little bit and pump the brakes on things like a single-payer bill.

We're going to take our time to figure out how to do it right.

There is this huge, pent-up liberal ambition in Sacramento.

They're trying to pause a little bit.

And that's sort of a national trend here, because a lot of state legislatures are worried

that the -- that there is another recession or economic slowdown coming.

So, states like California and Texas and states across the country have budget surpluses now.

They have saved more money for their rainy day funds than they ever have in the history

of this country.

But they're worried that the next time is coming.

And so everybody's being just a little bit cautious on spending on new programs.

AMNA NAWAZ: So, they may be cautious, but what are some of those issues that they might

touch on?

You mentioned housing to my producer earlier in a conversation.

REID WILSON: Housing is a huge -- yes, housing is a huge crisis in a number of coastal states,

big urban cores, places like San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle, New York.

AMNA NAWAZ: Yes.

REID WILSON: Homelessness is on the rise.

And so states are now typically getting into the housing market.

California is trying to address its -- sort of where density can happen, where more growth

can take place, because people are simply being priced out.

And there -- and the homelessness is on a rise -- on the rise, as a result.

AMNA NAWAZ: So, a great part of your job is to get to track some of the sort of off-kilter

new laws coming on the books too.

(LAUGHTER)

REID WILSON: Yes.

AMNA NAWAZ: What are some of those that you have seen?

REID WILSON: Well, as a parent of a toddler, I'm very happy that two states now will require

men's rooms to have baby changing tables.

It's a good thing.

I would appreciate that.

AMNA NAWAZ: That...

(CROSSTALK)

AMNA NAWAZ: ... news, yes.

(LAUGHTER)

REID WILSON: There are new sexual harassment policies coming online in California and Louisiana,

two state capitals that were rocked by sexual assault and harassment allegations over the

last few years.

I expect that we're going to see more of the sort of MeToo movement happening in state

legislative chambers across the country, because state capitals are really a place where there's

not a lot of oversight of people's behavior.

And, therefore, people have been behaving badly, so we're going to see more fallout

on that.

And then, funny enough, there is now a new state -- again, California, which tends to

lead the way on a lot of these things -- that is not only -- they're doing two interesting

things.

They are banning straws, plastic straws at restaurants, unless you ask for one, so your

waiter wouldn't hand you a plastic straw in the beginning.

AMNA NAWAZ: OK.

REID WILSON: And they're also going to start treating pets like children when it comes

to divorces.

AMNA NAWAZ: Explain that to me.

REID WILSON: So, people will be able to debate custody in front of a judge over pets.

This is now the second state to do it.

Illinois has already come online with this, but...

AMNA NAWAZ: Illinois was the first?

REID WILSON: Illinois was the first.

AMNA NAWAZ: California is following Illinois?

REID WILSON: California is following Illinois.

AMNA NAWAZ: OK.

REID WILSON: And now, if anybody gets divorced, their pet is just as subject to custody hearings

as their children.

AMNA NAWAZ: You are tracking it all at The Hill.

Reid Wilson, thank you very much for being here.

REID WILSON: Thank you.

Jake Browning NFL Draft Projection: Latest on Washington QB's Stock | Heavy.com - Duration: 6:26.

Jake Browning NFL Draft Projection: Latest on Washington QB's Stock | Heavy.com

For Washington Huskies quarterback Jake Browning, the next step following the Rose Bowl is 2019 NFL Draft preparation.

Browning has taken a step back statistically from two seasons ago, but his name still remains a hot-button topic.

In turn, he'll be a name to monitor after playing a huge role in the Huskies' impressive run over the past three years.

Browning has been Washington's starting quarterback since the 2015 season, a year in which the team went 7-6.

Since that season, the Huskies have gone a combined 32-8 while ranking inside the top-six in the country at various points each year.

The big question for Browning is how NFL draft scouts will view his stock currently.

After a sophomore season in which he threw or 3,430 yards with 43 touchdowns and just nine interceptions, he's been unable to match that production.

Over the past two seasons combined, the Washington signal-caller has thrown 35 total touchdowns with 15 interceptions (10 this year).

Browning has shown upside as a rusher, scoring 16 career touchdowns on the ground, including 15 in the past three years.

Let's take a look at the latest outlook on 2016 Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year's NFL draft stock and projected round.

Jake Browning's 2019 NFL Draft Stock.

The quarterback position ahead of this draft remains tough to gauge, and there's a handful of players who could be in good position to really elevate their stock.

As far as Browning goes, there's been a lower amount of interest and hype around him, largely due to the statistical decline and a few other factors.

Currently, Draft Tek has Browning as their No.

13 quarterback, surrounded by some talented names.

The group ahead of him according to the above rankings includes NC State's Ryan Finley (No.

9), Auburn's Jarrett Stidham (No.

10) and Washington State's Gardner Minshew (No.

11).

Each of those players has been rated higher in various places as well.

Browning may have a tough time jumping that group, and Walter Football has the Washington signal-caller behind those names as well.

Currently, he's listed as the No.

17 quarterback by the site, who even points to his benching vs.

California as an evaluation of his general on-field struggles at times this season.

Jake Browning's NFL Draft Projections.

It's tough to envision Browning managing to work his way up into the middle rounds at this point, but it's probably not completely impossible.

The above rankings from Walter Football give the Huskies quarterback a sixth-to-undrafted projection.

That's similar to what The Draft Network's Kyle Crabbs wrote on the senior.

In his breakdown, the analyst cited Browning's inability to push the ball downfield as one issue which could make him an undrafted free agent more than likely.

"Browning lacks juice on the ball, so even though he's making sound decisions with the football, he lacks the physical ability to deliver it in a timely manner.

Browning projects as a fringe roster player and lacks sorely in the physical skills to offer any notable upside.

Browning should be regarded as a camp body/UDFA target and at best be considered for a back-up role." Crabbs writes.

Barring a strong pro day and a solid showing at the NFL Scouting Combine, the 6-foot-1 quarterback likely to be a day three prospect or even a player signed after the draft.

Paid Family and Medical Leave in Washington State - Duration: 1:51.

Being there for family is what matters most.

That's why Washington state passed a strong paid

family and medical leave policy with bipartisan support.

Starting in January of 2020, Washington's new paid family

and medical leave program will make it possible for workers

to take 12 weeks of paid leave to care for a new child,

help a seriously ill family member,

or recover from their own serious medical condition.

The new program allows for 16 weeks of combined paid

family and medical leave each year,

and birth parents who experience complications with pregnancy

can take up to 18 weeks of leave.

Anyone who has worked at least 820 hours in the past year--

that's about 17 hours per week--

can apply for and receive benefits directly

from the state's Employment Security Department.

Benefits will be funded through a statewide insurance program,

so small businesses won't have to carry the financial burden

while an employee is on leave.

The average worker will contribute only about $2

each week from their paycheck starting in January 2019.

Small businesses with less than 50 employees

have the option to contribute to the program or not,

but their employees will still receive benefits either way.

And small businesses that do contribute

will be eligible for $3,000 in grants to help cover costs

while an employee is on leave.

Together we passed a paid family and medical leave policy

that will lift families, businesses, and our economy.

But our work doesn't stop here.

Join Moms Rising to help spread the word

and make sure everyone who's eligible for paid

family and medical leave understands

how to access their benefits.

Myles Gaskin NFL Draft Projection: Latest on Washington RB's Stock | Heavy.com - Duration: 5:56.

Myles Gaskin NFL Draft Projection: Latest on Washington RB's Stock | Heavy.com

Washington Huskies running back Myles Gaskin is wrapping up an impressive collegiate career and will head to the 2019 NFL Draft.

Gaskin, who was a four-year starter for the Huskies, has racked up production that rivals any runner in the upcoming draft class.

In turn, it's led to a decent amount of attention from analysts and gurus.

Over his four years with Washington, Gaskin totaled 5,202 rushing yards and 55 touchdowns on the ground through 51 games.

He averaged 5.6 yards per carry while adding on 62 receptions for 466 yards and five additional touchdowns as a pass-catcher.

These numbers all come prior to a Rose Bowl matchup with the Ohio State Buckeyes as well.

Gaskin was named First-Team All-Pac-12 in 2016 while earning second-team honors in each of the next two seasons.

We're going to take a look at the latest draft analysis and insight on the talented running back, as well as his current stock and the projected round he could come off the board.

Myles Gaskin's 2019 NFL Draft Stock.

There seems to be a consensus on how Gaskins is viewed as an NFL prospect, with the exception of one or two opinions.

For starters, ESPN draft analysts Mel Kiper Jr.

and Todd McShay are split on where he deserves a top-10 ranking.

On Kiper's latest 2019 Big Board, Washington's running back didn't make the cut while McShay has him as the No.

9 prospect.

But Walter Football seems to agree with McShay's assessment of Gaskin, ranking him No.

9 in the latest breakdown.

Draft Tek has him slightly higher than the rest, grading him out as the No.

8 back, ahead of Oklahoma's Rodney Anderson, Michigan Karan Higdon and Stanford's Bryce Love.

Myles Gaskin's NFL Draft Projections.

Going along with the aforementioned stock breakdowns, both Walter Football and Draft Tek seem to agree on the general projection for when Gaskin will come off the board.

The former has him with a range of rounds from 2-4 while the latter's most recent mock draft has him being selected No.

93 overall in round three by the Kansas City Chiefs.

One big question has to relate to the type of running back Gaskin could prove to be at the NFL level.

He's listed between 5-foot-9 to 5-foot-10 and weighs roughly 190-195 pounds.

Realistically, this could point to an ideal size for a change-of-pace back, but the senior has taken on a workhorse role throughout his collegiate career.

The Draft Network's Joe Marino actually addressed that topic and cited that even with his size, Gaskin should be an NFL contributor within the first few years of his NFL career.

"While he's proven capable of being the lead-back in college, his role in the NFL comes as a rotational player.

Gaskin is a nuanced runner that combines his outstanding field vision with decisive running, elusive ability and contact balance to find production.

He is a multifaceted back that should be able to factor into the mix early in his career.

By year three, Gaskin is capable of being a regular and valuable contributor to the offense." Marino wrote.
