Simple Gum Paste Bow | Craftsy | Michaels - Duration: 5:17.

(peaceful music)

- So I walked into my first job as a physical therapist,

after college, and realized right away

that I had made a very poor choice, and mostly

because it didn't spur my creative side, by any means.

And so I was always looking for something to do

at the end of a long day as a physical therapist.

And cake decorating seemed like a fun thing to do.

So I sought out classes and ended up

at a local Michael's store in Connecticut.

I literally went straight from work

to cake decorating classes every Tuesday evening.

I fell in love with the art of decorating cakes.

I fell in love with the creative aspect of it,

being able to just come home after a long day

and be able to do something fun,

and eventually started making cakes for friends and family.

I definitely started my cake experience

on the more simple side.

I really had an affinity for playing with fondant

and gum paste and those types of things.

So things like making bows and even sugar flowers

were the types of items I would do in my spare time,

when I just wanted to do something fun.

I've been a full-time cake decorator

for the past 11 years.

I run a studio with custom, luxury wedding cakes.

And what has been fun about my journey

is that I've taken every aspect that you can

through this path of being a cake designer

and that is starting by taking some lessons,

playing with cake, I actually taught Wilton Method

at Michael's for a couple of years in the beginning.

And now I continue to share

all of that knowledge through other methods.

I started cake decorating by doing really simple things,

like making a custom topper,

like this classy gum paste bow placed on top of a cake.

It really brings the cake itself to life.

You can even add this to a premade cake

to save yourself a little time.

So the first thing you wanna do is roll out your gum paste

to about an eighth of an inch thick.

We wanna make sure this is wide enough

for two widths of the spatula.

The next step is to texture our ribbons.

So, using a rolling pin, you're gonna apply some pressure

and roll it gently all the way across.

With a food-safe brush, I'm gonna add a little shimmer dust

just to give it a satin look, like a real ribbon.

So now I'm gonna cut two lengths of ribbon

using a food-safe straightedge.

You'll need four lengths altogether.

When working with gum paste, you wanna work

in small sections so that it doesn't dry out on you.

(upbeat music)

So you're gonna roll out and texture your gum paste,

but this time you're gonna cut out two strips

that are two widths of the spatula.

I've got a 6" cake covered in teal fondant,

but you could choose to use buttercream here, as well.

To attach our ribbon strips, we're gonna add

just a little bit of water with a food-safe brush.

Flip over our strip, and gently brush the water on.

We're gonna place all four strips on our cake

and have them meet at the top center.

And now all you need to do is cut a diagonal

through the center of all of the ribbons

and remove the excess pieces.

(upbeat music)

For our ribbon tails, we're gonna take

one of our wider pieces, cut it in half,

and then cut diagonals at each end.

Taking one of our ribbon tails, we're gonna hold it

with our finger and our thumb,

and do what's called a box knot.

You make an S on one side

and an S on the other side and squash it together.

And that's what gives the beautiful ruffling to our tail.

To make our bow loops, we're gonna cut this in half first,

and then we're gonna pleat it down the center.

And that is folding it.

And then we'll create another box knot at that other end.

Now with gum paste, sometimes you need to add a little bit

of a paper towel in here to prop the bow while it dries.

Once the bow loops are dry, we'll go ahead

and place them on the cake.

This is your chance to fluff and puff a little.

You may need to add a little bit of water

to make them stick.

To finish off your bow, all you need to do

is add a little strip of gum paste.

And you can see, just adding a bow

can dress up even the simplest of cakes.

(upbeat music)

3 Simple Questions To Find Your Value - Duration: 2:57.

- I rewrote the LinkedIn profile for a friend recently.

And while it's not something I specialize in,

it's copywriting, so I took a look.

And it's amazing how we tend to undervalue ourselves.

My friend is in the film business

and his headline on LinkedIn was Aspiring Producer.

And that just made me realize that a lot of people

don't understand the value that they have,

because I asked a couple questions deep.

There's no way this guy was an aspiring producer.

We were literally producing a show as we talked

about him being an aspiring producer.

And I found out that this guy not only worked

at two of the fastest-growing film production companies

in the world, but also, while working

at one of these major companies,

wrote a feature film that's currently on Netflix

and has a 60% on Rotten Tomatoes.

So what's aspiring about that?

Now, at minimum, he is producer.

But if he doesn't see the value in himself,

I wonder about what we're missing in ourselves.

So the exercise that works for me

when I'm trying to see how other people see me

so I can write something like a LinkedIn profile,

I'll ask myself a few questions.

The first thought exercise is I'll try to get inside

the mind of somebody who really likes me

and picture how they would brag about me to someone else.

Let's say at a conference or an event,

and for me, I've already done all this work.

So what I picture is Hey, that's Alex!

He has over 1.5 million views on YouTube.

What are the points that you can hit on?

And the numbers can be smaller, too.

I remember when I was first going out

to jobs and writing my resume,

I had a book on Amazon that sold around 300 copies.

And so I was like "Oh, no, only 300 copies!

That's a very small amount.

But the resume consultant I was talkin' to

said "Just put that in there."

Whatever level you're at, own that level.

So I put that line in my resume,

drove sales of an Amazon e-book

from zero to 300 in 30 days.

And that sounds way more impressive

than sold a couple books on Amazon.

So in order to find your value, do that for yourself.

Here are some other good questions to ask.

What's something cool that I've worked on?

Sit down for a second.

Literally ask yourself that question.

Do it out loud if you have to,

and force yourself to answer,

The other thing to notice about that question

is it's not a yes or no.

The other way to phrase that question

could've been have I worked on anything cool?

And the reason why that's not the right way

to phase that question is your mind

is just gonna easily say no

and you're not gonna have an answer.

But if the question is what's something cool

I've worked on, you're much more likely

to come up with an answer.

Som other ones, how am I successful

instead of am I successful.

And come up with specific answers.

What's the most ecent project I'm proud of.

Instead of have I woked on any cool projects recently.

Run through that exercise, listen to the answers,

write them down, and start seeing

how valuable you really are.

If this video helped, I'd love if you

would send it to a friend or two.

We're tryin' to hi 100,000 subs this year,

so every share counts.

Also, I'm not a resume consultant.

But if you want me to take a look

at your resume and give feedback on it,

feel free to book a consult and we

can dig through it in an hour.

That's over at experiment27.com/consult.

I'm Alex Burman, thanks.

Simple DIY Dog Friendly Ice Cream! How to Make Your Very Own Homemade Doggy Ice Cream! - Duration: 3:02.

hi everybody and welcome back to Relax My Dog today me and Milo are going

to be sharing with you how to make your dog their very own DIY dog friendly ice

cream now we did make this ice cream yesterday ready for Milo to enjoy today

and so we could show you him enjoying it but today we're just going to go through

the ingredients we're going to show you a little cutaways of us making it

yesterday so let's get started before we get started all you need to do is go down

below and let us know what your favorite ice cream flavor is and what you think

your dog's favorite ice cream flavor is we absolutely love hearing your guys's

fun ideas down below personally my favorite ice cream flavor is probably mint

chocolate something like that and I think Milo's favorite will probably be

peanut butter and banana which is what we're making today

so what you will need to make this ice cream is one ripe banana one cup of

peanut butter 2 cups of natural yoghurt and 2 tablespoons of honey it really is

that simple obviously you'll just need to freeze it

and you'll also need a freezable container as well so the first thing you

must do is mash up the banana and stir that in with the natural yogurt then you

need to go over to your microwave and it warm up the peanut butter so it is like

a consistency that you can stir so it's almost like a liquid basically you need

to pour that in with the mashed banana and also the natural yogurt stir that in

until you get a sort of it will look a little bit lumpy because of the peanut

butter and also because of the banana because you can't mush up a banana

that well or at least i can't I think Milo quite enjoys banana pieces anyway

so I thought I'd save him a lot of a banana too so you need to mix all of

that together and then add the two tablespoons of honey in with that so you

get this sort of thick mixture and then you need to get a freezable container

pour that in and then leave it overnight to freeze and then the next day it

should be ready to serve to your dog it really really is that simple and your

dog will absolutely love it Milo absolutely loves his banana and

peanut butter ice cream and it's definitely something that you can share

among the other dogs because this mixture does make quite a lot of it so

it's for your dog to enjoy whenever you have your very own ice cream and that Is

it before we finished we just need to go through our t-shirt and giveaway all

you need to do to win one of our fabulous t-shirts is pop over to our

Instagram and post a picture of your dog the funniest the better and
