today we're going to show you three simple techniques to whitewash wood all

you need is some white paint and few simple tools with this technique using

equal parts paint and water the paint becomes semi-transparent and allows the

wood grain show through first mix your paint and water next grab a rag and

apply liberally finally go back over and even things out once it's dry apply

another coat or two and you get your desired finished look

this technique is best for new lumber and smooth surfaces it creates an even

and controlled look with just a little bit of farmhouse style with this

technique use wax to mask high points and grain in the board before painting

using the side of a candle roughly rub wax along the entire surface of the wood

working quickly and sporadically this leaves an uneven coat of wax on the

surface apply paint with a paintbrush

you'll see some of the waxed spots repelling paint after the paint has dried too tacky

consistency take a rag and scrub over the board to remove even more paint just

dip your rig and a little bit of water and keep going until you like the look

this technique really only works on rough or reclaimed wood with a lot of

texture first pour a bead of paint down the

center of your board then take a plastic putty knife and drag the paint across

the board to fill in the grain one coat of paint should do it but you can always

add a second for more coverage

whitewashing is an way easy to get a rustic farmhouse look in any

Preparations:

Cut the ingredients to your desired shape and size

Bring a large pan of water to a boil. Add some salt.

Cook the pasta according to the packet directions

Drain.

Save one cup of pasta water (about 300g) for later

Heat one tablespoon of oil over medium-low heat

Sauteé sausage for 1-2 minutes for both sides

Remove sausage and set aside

Reduce to low heat.

Stir in frozen thyme butter/garlic/onion

Once butter is melted, increase to medium-low heat

Add pasta water. Cover and bring it to a boil.

Stir in cucumbers and cooked pasta until fully coated

Turn off the heat! Pour back the cooked sausage

Mix with fresh parsley and basil

Season with salt and black pepper

Stroke test: Simple scan 'can predict if someone will suffer potentially fatal stroke'

The non-invasive technique is able to indicate whether plaques in carotid arteries, which supply the brain with blood, are rich in cholesterol and likely to become clogged.

The rupture of fatty plaques can block arteries and cause debilitating and life-threatening strokes as the brain is starved of oxygen. At present, risk is measured by the size of the plaque in the carotid artery.

If a plaque is deemed to be too big it is surgically removed but the method can miss fatty plaques that are not big, but still carry a high risk of rupturing.

The new MRI-style technique was developed to differentiate between the risky plaques that contain a lot of cholesterol and those that are more stable.

In a world-first British researchers used the scan to measure the amount of cholesterol in the carotid plaques of 26 patients scheduled for surgery.

After they were removed they looked at the actual cholesterol content in each plaque and found the new technique was accurate with the more cholesterol detected, the greater the risk.

The collaboration between researchers at the University of Oxford and surgeons working at the city's John Radcliffe Hospital was supported by the British Heart Foundation [BHF]. The team have confirmed and extended their findings in another study on 50 people.

Study leader Dr Luca Biasiolli, from the University of Oxford, said: "Stroke is a leading cause of disability and the third biggest killer in the UK.

"When someone goes to hospital having suffered a minor stroke it's vital doctors know whether the patient might be at risk of a further stroke, which could be fatal.

"Being able to quantify cholesterol in carotid plaques is a really exciting prospect as this new MRI technique could help doctors to identify patients at higher risk of stroke and make more informed decisions on their treatments." There are more than 100,000 strokes in the UK each year, around a quarter of which are caused by carotid plaques.

Latest figures show stroke costs the UK health care system an estimated £2 billion every year. Experts think the quick and simple screening technique could be available in clinics within two years if further tests prove successful.

Professor Sir Nilesh Samani, medical director of the BHF, said: "When someone suffers a mini-stroke, they often go on to suffer a more serious, or even deadly, stroke in the hours, days or weeks that follow.

This exciting research opens up the possibility that in the future we may be able to more accurately identify people with carotid plaques that are likely to rupture and cause a stroke.

These patients can then be treated earlier, for example with surgery to remove the plaque, while others might be spared surgery altogether. More research is now necessary before this advance can come into routine clinical practice.

However, if successful this technique has the promise to save lives." The research was published in the journal JACC: Cardiovascular Imaging.
