George Washington High School Bond Renovations Get Thumbs Up - Duration: 2:26.

(Narrator) From one school year,

(MaryRose Cohan) "It's not the best learning environment for our students."

(Narrator) to the next.

(MaryRose) "It fits the needs of today's learners."

(Narrator) George Washington High School has seen big changes, thanks to "Focused Investments"

– part of the 572-million dollar 2016 DPS Bond.

From a revamp of the library,

(Khalid) "It's just so much better as a workspace."

(Narrator) to the women's locker rooms.

(Meredith) "We have a team room now, so it fosters that sort of community.

Our showers go over our heads, which is really exciting (laughs)!"

(Narrator) To spruced up STEM labs, improved lighting, and better windows and blinds across

campus which keep temperatures more stable.

(Henry) "There was one class, my seventh period, where I'd walk (in) and I'd just

be hit with a swamp of humidity and heat.

where I'd be hit with a swamp of humidity and heat.

And then my eighth period would be freezing cold.

But that's not quite the same this year."

(Narrator) They're projects students, educators and parents identified as major priorities

– which DPS, working with the school and a local architect, helped bring to life.

(MaryRose) "I think in general they're a morale booster."

(Narrator) We first met speech and debate teacher MaryRose Cohan in the Spring ahead

of the renovations, annnnnnd…

(MaryRose) "Like windows that are over 50 years old" "These plastic brown things

that get pulled down and stay down, they're kind of unsightly."

(Narrator) Now that the dust has settled, she's taking on a different tone.

(MaryRose) "I think it makes all of us feel like we're being supported.

And the fact that the public was willing to help us get those (renovations) really means

a lot."

(Narrator) The look and feel of GW gets a 'pretty' obvious – okay, unanimous thumbs

up.

(Meredith) "I feel sometimes before you had to dig sort of deep to find out how cool

our community is.

But now that it looks super cool, it's really nice!"

(Narrator) More importantly, these improvements are helping students with their learning.

(Henry) "I love the study rooms.

They're absolutely incredible.

(Ross) "And I feel like now, after the renovations, the library's just a lot nicer to study

in or do some work in during an off period."

(Henry) "Being able to go in there, hunker down, type out for 2-3 hours after school

ends.

It's been amazing."

(Narrator) And it wouldn't have happened without the support of the Denver community.

(Meredith) "I'm so grateful."

(Khalid) "Yeah, I'm very grateful for this new space."

(Meredith) "It really means a lot to have community support."

(Narrator) With this update on the 2016 DPS Bond, I'm Ben McKee.

Dylan Washington Taylor The Monitor interview - Duration: 4:20.

Dylan Washington Taylor

So I formed a political party called Umbrella for Batswana (UB)

This is a temporary name we will change it when we register the party

This party is generally made up of young people

So you have not registered the party?

I'm going to register it now

Now you mean when?

Maybe today or tomorrow. We are at the moment finalizing our constitution

We have got the reasons why the party is not yet registered

The aim of this party is to take over all the opposition parties like…

UDC, AP, BNF, RAP, all those opposition political parties

We will take them and put them in UB and then win against the ruling BDP in 2019

But that is the second best option…

The best option would have been…obviously we are going to win in 2019,

But the best option were if we don't go to general elections in 2019 and rather form a compromise government with BDP

And have 2 Presidents of Botswana preferably me and the incumbent President Masisi. " Co-Presidency"

Its obvious of course we are better that BDP but you have to look at the fact that BDP is the one that built the foundation of this nation

How are you better than BDP?

We are better in terms of politics, winning elections etc.

Who do you mean when you say "we"?

I mean young people. This party is generally made up of young people

So do you have members?

Yes

Where are they?

Currently we have members who are mobilizing the party,

we are planning on having our first rally in 2-3 weeks time

The most important thing about our party is respect

When you are a young person you come through, and become better than your predecessors

You learn from your predecessors' experience and mistakes and you eventually surpass them

I personally believe that I am better than the currently leading opposition leaders (Duma Boko, Ndaba Gaolathe, Saleshando).

Better in what ways?

In terms of being a great politician, taking over, strategies…

Those opposition leaders have no choice and nowhere to run and hide

Their political parties (UDC, AP, etc) are going to go under our party (UB)

We have strategies, we have better plans than what they currently have

Where is the strategy?

Check our website (www.umbrellaforbatswana.com), we have this JAOPPPE idea and many other brilliant strategies

What is JAOPPPE?

Instead of the failing "Constituency Allocation" initiative by UDC, we are proposing the JAOPPPE initiative (Joint All Opposition Political Parties Primary Elections)

Basically we are going to hold joint primary elections for all Botswana opposition parties (UDC, BNF, BCP, BMD, BPP, AP and RAP)

What is RAP now?

Real Alternative Party, the newly formed political party. Don't undermine newcomer parties…

We are going to hold joint primary elections where all Botswana opposition parties will contest,

and then the winner candidates will be the final and only candidates who will represent the entire opposition in 2019 and be voted by all opposition votes (to prevent vote splitting).

For example lets say we go to Gaborone Central constituency. All parties compete and lets say Phenyo Butale (the AP candidate) wins…

We will make legally binding agreements that everyone in Gaborone Central constituency should vote the winner candidate (Phenyo Butale)

And what about UB?

All the winner candidates will go under UB, basically UB will be the ultimate umbrella party

Such that in 2019 only 2 political parties will compete. UB versus BDP. No vote splitting so UB will win

Who will be the President of UB?

UB President will be directly and democratically elected by all opposition voters

So I will be competing against Ndaba Gaolathe, Duma Boko, Dumelang Saleshando and anyone who desires UB Presidency

Even you if you desire UB Presidency you should come and compete for it

…But from my calculations and forecasts, one year from now (in May 2019) I will be very popular such that when I contest for UB Presidency it will be obvious I will win

I will defeat everyone…
