News on Youtube Mar 28 2018

-that's a nice hat

-thank you

-so what did we do this weekend?

-we went to the March For Our Lives in DC

(national anthem plays)

Our University provided busing there and back

and that was a bit of a process

but I'm really glad we got to go in Washington DC specifically

-what was the march like?

-The March was a lot different than I expected

before we went I did a lot of research on how to stay safe

how to take care of yourself if you are tear gassed

so I went in with these expectations but once I got there I quickly found out that I was very wrong

this march was organized to make sure that everybody feels safe

which is very appropriate for what we're marching for

-how big was the crowd?

-Crowd was huuuuge

it really messed with my ideas of what like a "march" was

because I was just expecting to nonstop be moving

But there was very little space to actually move around

because it was PACKED

you cannot understand just how big it was unless you were there

like these overhead shots don't even do it justice

we were crammed! there was- I thought it was just gonna be students

It was children: elementary school age, middle school aged! Parents, grandparents, everyone was there

every background, every shape, every size, every age

-what's your big takeaway from the march?

my takeaway...

obviously things like this shouldn't happen

but when there's such devastation the unity that comes afterwards

it can't be replicated, it can't be recreated, it can't even be described in words

just the feeling when you're there- it was incredible.

the amount of love and support and need and desire to change our country!

From the other side, if you don't believe that gun reform should happen,

(these) people will say that we're just criticizing America and that we don't like to be American

that we should just leave!

I have never felt more patriotic than when I was at that march!

because I think being a true patriot, somebody who really loves America,

is somebody who wants to see America be better

and I feel like everyone at that march didn't want to leave

they want to make our home be better

a place where we can feel safer

a place where less children have to deal with this

Now that I've talked to you about my experience and takeaways

I'm going to be playing some clips from the protest with volume

so you can experience some highlights for yourself

stick around after these clips so you can experience some of our other DC shenanigans

(Miley Cyrus singing) You'll never reach it

every step I'm taking

and every move I make feels

lost with no direction

VOTE THEM OUT!

VOTE THEM OUT!

VOTE THEM OUT!

VOTE THEM OUT!

(gospel choir singing) Ohhh in DC!

oh in DC I'm gonna let it shine!

Oh in DC we're gonna let it shine!

Oh in DC we're gonna let it shine!

Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine!

(Yolanda Renee King speaking) A great generation!

(crowd cheering back) A GREAT GENERATION!

-Now I'd like you to say it like you really, really mean it!

SPREAD THE WORD!!

-SPREAD THE WORD!!

-HAVE YOU HEARD?

-(me mishearing) SPREAD THE WORD!!!

so the first thing we had to do after the March was go on our quest for food

which was very difficult because a lot of places were shut down

If you're going to a march and you only have a few hours...

ummm screw that

get a hotel room!

Why would you-

yeeees

there's a pencil in the sky!

there's a pencil in the sky!

the first thing we have to do at Madame Tussauds was go to the bathroom

and on all the stalls at said actress, musician, cultural icon

and I made a lame joke about how I was all of the above

oh no this march is getting pretty serious

This the OG Ben

-you know.. Thomas Jefferson looks nothing like Daveed Diggs!!

-this was me apologizing to "crooked Hillary" about all the bullshit she had to deal with throughout her life

here's Ben's impression of Nixon

-(Ben as Nixon) I'm Richard Nixooon

I am not a crook!

Not a crook!

-He does look like he'd sound like that

Can you believe he's the most highly paid actor??

'cause neither can I!!

(me as Jimmy Fallon) yeah!! I break character all the time and I keep laughing

and no one calls me out for it 'cause I'm Jimmy Fallon

(me as Stephen Colbert) I'm here with Athena who was here today for the March For Our Lives!

this is us walking back to the busses

and I was complaining about how we did not spend enough time in DC

you're walking in front of the Capitol!!

do you know how many f*cked up things happen in there?!

-Too many!

-do you know how unprepared we were for this trip?

way too unprepared!!

here is us walking on a narrow strip of sidewalk-ish land on the side of the road

because we went to the wrong parking lot trying to find out where our bus is!

that's such a weird note to end on!

why would you do that?

because I want you to know that if you're planning on going to a different state to go to a march

plan better than us

please

Trump Has A New Nickname In Washington - Duration: 6:33.

WELCOME TO "THE LATE SHOW."

I'M STEPHEN COLBERT.

( CHEERS AND APPLAUSE ) DONALD TRUMP LOVES TO TRASH TALK

PEOPLE, BUT, STRANGELY, HE HAS NEVER SAID ONE BAD THING ABOUT

VLADIMIR PUTIN.

IN FACT, LAST WEEK, TRUMP CALLED PUTIN TO CONGRATULATE HIM ON

WINNING A SHADY ELECTION IN WHICH HE WAS THE ONLY REAL

CANDIDATE, DESPITE THE FACT THAT HIS ADVISORS GAVE HIM NOTES IN

ALL-CAPITAL LETTERS STATING "DO NOT CONGRATULATE,"

COME ON GUYS, IF YOU WANT HIM TO READ A NOTE, PUT IT ON SOMETHING

HE PAYS ATTENTION TO, LIKE A CHEESEBURGER OR IVANKA.

( LAUGHTER ) THEY JUST REPLACED THE SIGN THAT

SAID DO NOT DATE.

( LAUGHTER ) HE PAYS ATTENTION.

IT'S GOT A HAPPY ENDING!

( LAUGHTER ) SO, UP TILL NOW, HE'S BEEN A

HUGE FAN OF PUTIN.

WELL, YESTERDAY, ALL THAT...

STAYED THE SAME.

BUT THE UNITED STATES DID EXPEL 60 RUSSIANS OVER A U.K. POISON

ATTACK.

60.

NORMALLY, FOR TRUMP TO EXPEL THAT MANY PEOPLE, THEY HAVE TO

BE IN HIS CABINET.

( LAUGHTER ) ( APPLAUSE )

WE LOVE THE CABINET!

IT'S NOT THEIR FAULT.

ALL THESE RUSSIANS WERE IDENTIFIED AS INTELLIGENCE

AGENTS, AND THEIR EXPULSION HAS LED TO THE CLOSURE OF THE

RUSSIAN CONSULATE IN SEATTLE.

THERE WAS A BUNCH OF RUSSIAN SPIES IN SEATTLE?

HOW HARD WOULD IT BE TO IDENTIFY THEM?

"AM FROM SEATTLE.

I LOVE NIRVANKA!

AND THEIR SONG 'YOU SMELL LIKE A TEENAGER.'"

( LAUGHTER ) THAT'S MY SEATTLE IMPRESSION.

( LAUGHTER ) THERE'S BEEN NO OFFICIAL

RESPONSE YET FROM RUSSIA, BUT THEIR EMBASSY ASKED ON TWITTER:

"WHAT U.S. CONSULATE GENERAL WOULD YOU CLOSE IN RUSSIA, IF IT

WAS UP TO YOU TO DECIDE?

VLADIVOSTOK, EKATERINBURG, OR ST. PETERSBURG."

AND LIKE ALL RUSSIAN VOTES, THE WINNER WAS VLADIMIR PUTIN.

CONGRATULATIONS.

DAMN IT!

DAMN IT!

( APPLAUSE ) ( PIANO RIFF )

THERE'S MORE NEWS ON THE STORMY DANIELS FRONT.

AND THE REST OF HER.

( LAUGHTER ) THE PRESIDENT HAS A BRILLIANT,

NEW DEFENSE.

HE'S TELLING PEOPLE THAT STORMY DANIELS ISN'T HIS TYPE.

( LAUGHTER ) WHAT?

SHE'S A BUXOM BLONDE.

SHE COULDN'T BE MORE HIS TYPE IF SHE WAS A FILET O' FISH WRAPPED

IN A HUNDRED RUBLE BILL.

( APPLAUSE ) AND WHAT KIND OF DEFENSE IS

THAT?

"I WOULD NEVER CHEAT ON MY WIFE... WITH HER!

BUT I LIKE THAT ONE OVER THERE."

"OH, THAT'S IVANKA, DO NOT DATE.

OKAY, GUYS.

DO NOT, EVER.

I WOULD ABSOLUTELY NEVER ."

TRUMP'S BEEN LARGELY SILENT ABOUT THE AFFAIR, BUT,

YESTERDAY, WE GOT A STATEMENT FROM WHITE HOUSE DEPUTY PRESS

SECRETARY AND TODDLER WHO WANTS TO PLAY WITH YOUR KEYS, RAJ

SHAH, WHO TOLD REPORTERS "THE PRESIDENT DOESN'T BELIEVE ANY OF

THE CLAIMS MS. DANIELS MADE IN THE INTERVIEW LAST NIGHT WERE

ACCURATE."

WAIT, WHAT DO YOU MEAN HE "DOESN'T BELIEVE"?

THAT'S A WEIRD WAY TO RESPOND BECAUSE HE'S THE CLAIM HE

DOESN'T BELIEVE.

THAT'S LIKE SAYING "I DIDN'T HAVE SEX WITH HER...THAT I KNOW

OF."

BUT, EVIDENTLY, THE SCANDAL IS STARTING TO AFFECT TRUMP'S

REPUTATION IN WASHINGTON.

>> PEOPLE ARE REFERRING TO HIM HERE IN WASHINGTON BEHIND HIS

BACK BY A NEW NICKNAME.

HE'S FAMOUS FOR GIVING NICKNAMES-- HE'S NOW KNOWN AS

SPANKY, AND, UH, THAT'S NOT A GOOD THING.

( CHEERS AND APPLAUSE ) >> Stephen: I THINK THAT'S A

WONDERFUL THING.

MAYBE THE BEST NEWS I'VE HEARD ALL DAY.

( LAUGHTER ) BUT, IN ALL SERIOUSNESS, WE

SHOULD SHOW SOME RESPECT -- IT'S PRESIDENT SPANKY.

( LAUGHTER ) AND THIS THING IS STARTING TO

GET UGLY.

AND, ADMITTEDLY, IT STARTED PRETTY UNATTRACTIVE.

BUT LAST NIGHT ON CNN, STORMY'S LAWYER MICHAEL AVENATTI AND

TRUMP'S LAWYER'S LAWYER, DAVID SCHWARTZ WENT AFTER EACH OTHER

LIKE TWO LAWYERS FIGHTING OVER A TV CAMERA.

>> LET'S TALK ABOUT MICHAEL COHEN, WHAT KIND OF MAN THIS IS?

THIS IS A LEGAL GENIUS.

COMPLETELY FALSE.

THE GUY DOESN'T EVEN KNOW THE LAW.

HE'S A THUG.

>> RIGHT, RIGHT.

>> YOUR FRIEND IS A THUG.

>> WELL, THANK YOU.

>> HE'S A THUG.

>> THAT'S A MILLION DOLLARS.

>> NO, THAT'S 3 MILLION.

>> A MILLION DOLLARS.

>> THUG.

THUG.

>> A MILLION DOLLARS.

>> THUG. THUG.

>> YOU KNOW WHAT?

YOU'RE A THUG.

>> THUG, THUG, THUG.

HE'S A THUG.

>> BY THE WAY-- >> HE'S A THUG.

>> STEPHEN: GENTLEMAN, PLEASE, YOU'RE BOTH THUGS.

( LAUGHTER ) I GUESS THEY'RE JUST FOLLOWING

THE LEGAL PRECEDENT AS ESTABLISHED IN THE LANDMARK

CASE "SHUT UP V. NO, YOU SHUT UP."

( LAUGHTER ) I CAN'T BELIEVE HOW HAPPY

ANDERSON COOPER LOOKED THERE.

( LAUGHTER ) IN CONTRAST,

COULD JEFFREY TOOBIN LOOK ANY MORE AWKWARD SITTING BETWEEN

THESE GUYS?

WELL, WE HERE AT "THE LATE SHOW" HAVE ACQUIRED EXCLUSIVE AUDIO OF

JEFFREY'S INTERNAL MONOLOGUE.

>> NO GAL VONNIC SKIN RESPONSE?

>> OH, GOD.

WHEN WILL THIS BE OVER?

I WANT TO GO HOME.

WHY AM I EVEN HERE?

I'M AN AUTHOR FOR GOD'S SAKE.

NOW BOTH SIDES OF MY FACE ARE COVERED IN SPITTLE AND IT SMELLS

LIKE GARLIC AND BRUT COLOGNE.ñrx DAMN YOU, ANDERSON COOPER.ñr

DAMN YOU TO HELL.çóxDÑi >> Stephen: IT WILL BE OVER

Fact Check: What's the deal with the line-item veto? - Duration: 2:16.

-To prevent the omnibus situation

from ever happening again,

I'm calling on Congress to give me a line-item

veto for all government-spending bills.

-Give me a line-item veto. -Line-item veto.

-If you give me the line-item veto,

I'll remove some of that unnecessary spending.

-Coming up, President Clinton signs the line-item veto bill.

The bill would give the president the power

to cancel items line by line in spending bills

unless Congress overrides the veto by a two-thirds vote.

Currently, the president may veto an entire bill,

but not specific items.

-It gives me great pleasure today to sign

into law the line-item veto.

This is a bipartisan achievement

that has been long sought by presidents.

-But the move was not without vocal opposition.

Just two years later,

the Supreme Court struck down the provision.

-I think -- I think they should give

the president a line-item veto.

-That's been ruled unconstitutional

by the Supreme Court, sir.

-Well, again, Congress could pass a rule, okay,

that allows them to do it.

-No, no, sir. It would be a constitutional amendment.

-Chris, we don't need to get into a debate in terms of --

there's different ways of doing this.

-Have you been able to find a workaround

to that Supreme Court ruling that says it's unconstitutional?

-Well, there are certain things being discussed

with respect to House and Senate rules.

I don't want to get ahead of anything

that we may come out in favor of.

-Experts say that one way of doing it legally would be

to give the president

the power to suggest line-item vetoes to Congress.

In this workaround scenario,

Congress would pass a spending bill,

send it to the president, who would edit the draft

and send it back.

Congress would have to vote on the edits

and then send it back to the White House

for the president to sign.

But that's not really a line-item veto so much

as another round of traditional legislating.

Mnuchin should brush up on his government 101.

He receives four Pinocchios.

George Will: The American president is no longer the most powerful person in the world - Duration: 2:17.

The president has been, presumptively, the most powerful man in the world for so long

that Americans might be startled to know that it's not written in the laws of nature.

"Tear down this wall."

Beginning about 1942, the U.S. president became, and ever since has been, the most powerful

man in the world.

I believe that that is no longer the case.

In part because the current president, Mr. Trump, has pulled America back from the alliances,

which made the president so powerful.

The power of the United States militarily rests inevitably, at the end of the day, on

the power economically.

The confidence that other nations have in the stability and steadiness of American leadership

is diminished when the United States goes to arduous lengths to negotiate something

like the Trans-Pacific Partnership, and then, almost on a whim, says, "Nevermind.

Come to think about it, we'll just take a pass on this."

This means that into this vacuum created by the American withdrawal will flow Chinese

power.

So as the power of the United States president is diminished, that of the president of China

increases.

The president of China being, I believe now, the most powerful man in the world.

The one constant in the remarkably shifting set of convictions and pronouncements of this

president has been hostility to free trade.

He has an awfully unsteady and hard-to-follow application of his protectionism.

He announces protectionism, and then he begins to announce carve-outs for certain preferred

nations and preferred industries.

Of course, that's the problem with protectionism, is it doesn't just give rise to crony capitalism,

it is inherently crony capitalism.

It's very hard to make clear what the principle is when the president imposes these, because

he imposes them on friends like Canada, jeopardizes uncertain allies like South Korea, aiming,

we're told, somehow at China.

But it's very hard to follow the principle in this scattershot pattern of president's

protectionist behavior.

Kim seeks to solidify ties with Beijing before upcoming talks with Washington: U.S. press - Duration: 1:48.

Staying with the maiden meeting between the two leaders that took everyone by surprise.

Speculation also runs rampant over what Beijing hoped to gain through the talks.

Lee Jeong-yeon highlights what it could mean for China, through coverage of the event by

American media outlets.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un's visit to China on Monday took the world by surprise.

Many major U.S. media outlets reporting on the fast developments cited experts that saw

the visit as a way for Kim to strengthen solidarity with Beijing to gain more negotiating power

before the talks with Seoul and Washington.

The New York Times called it "Kim's international debut" as he seeks to capitalize on the upcoming

talks with President Trump, and said his visit to meet with Xi implies he values the Chinese

leader's opinion, or was even seeking advice.

The paper cited an expert on North Korea who said Kim is starting a new game, trying to

find a way to not have to completely give up his nuclear arsenal despite what he told

South Korean envoys about seriously considering denuclearization.

Time Magazine said the visit signifies the regime's desperate move to end its isolation

from the international community as sanctions are forcing the regime to tighten its purse

strings.

As for what Beijing got out of the talks, according to Bloomberg, one of the first sources

to report on Kim's visit,...

President Xi Jinping also probably wanted to know what Kim had in mind before the talks

with Trump, and to see how much influence he could exert.

This is a popular analysis among experts on China who say that through this visit, Xi

is back in the loop on the nuclear issue,... after being sidelined in the upcoming talks

to come between South Korea, North Korea, and the U.S.
