I joined Curtin University as a Professor of Econometrics, in the School

of Economics and Finance in late 2011. My expertise lies in the development and

application of mathematical (econometric) models across a wide variety of areas.

I developed a strong interest in health economics, the particular health

behaviours related to licit and illicit substances, to try and understand exactly

how people respond to sensitive questions such as their drug use in

survey data, and how reliable these responses are in aggregate. Understanding

the complex interrelationships in areas such as these, will better inform policy

to more effectively discern and control these socially adverse behaviours.

To date, I have been awarded eight ARC Discovery Project grants and have held ARC

funding continually since 2003. In addition to receive grants from both the NHMRC

and AHURI funding bodies. Combined these grants amount to around 3.5

million dollars. I've also published nearly 70 journal articles, books and

book chapters, which have been cited over 2,000 times. My future plans are to help

advance Curtin's position as a national leader in Applied Economics and Health

Economics in particular, and to ensure this research effectively translates

into better policy and health and well-being outcomes for Australians.

American Modern Opera Company Leads Public Performance at Harvard Innovation Labs - Duration: 9:18.

We would like to begin the event with a collaboration with you so when we begin it would be great

actually if you stood up and got as close to each other as possible.

Can everyone turn to the piece of paper that says at the top "Cornelius Cardew - the great

learning".

Does everyone have a copy?

So we are going to create a piece of music together.

According to a few simple rules.

The text that is kind of arranged as a acrostic poem here if there being any confusion.

It is a translation of Confucius and that is our text that we all going to sing.

Each line is something that we sing repeatedly.

So when it says sing 8, it means sing that line 8 times.

If its a phrase you repeat the phrase.

Every time we sing a line we sing it for as long as we can hold our breath.

So its going to be long.

You sing the word 'if' as long as you can 8 times.

Is there any rhyme or reason to this chaos?

Yes kind of.

When it comes to the pitches everybody up here knows what pitches are.

When we start everyone picks their own pitch.

When we begin it is going to sound like absolute chaos, white noise.

A dense mass of sound.

Every time you change line you change to a new pitch.

Every time you change to a new pitch you have to take a pitch from someone else in the room.

(singing)

I Enjoy Being Out In Public (AD) - Duration: 2:52.

(slow, dramatic music)

- [Female Voice] Before treatment,

my life was extremely chaotic.

Whether it was my trauma, or everything else going on,

I just, I couldn't get a grip on anything.

A lot of hurt.

A lot of isolation.

I hid from everybody.

(slow, dramatic music)

I was homeless, and

had to sleep in Penn Station.

I just couldn't deal with being around people,

because I was so overwhelmed with fear and anxiety.

I wasn't sure who was there to hurt me.

The anxiety would be a ten.

(slow, dramatic music) (moves into uptempo music)

- Hi! (laughter) How are you?

- Since I've gotten treatment,

my quality of life has definitely improved.

I enjoy being out in public, with people.

And now I'm always telling, my husband or whoever I'm with,

I'm like, "Come on, guys, let's be outside!"

You know, I don't like being stuck inside.

- At 110 degree weather, in the south.

- I'm thinking more in the positive side of things.

(laughter) - Oh my gosh.

- Cheers

- I don't think I could have done it without therapy.

Because,

I didn't have,

the knowledge of what was occurring,

within my brain, specifically.

- I don't know what this is yet.

- So if I hadn't sought therapy,

I would have just continued to ignore it

and just keep things inside.

- No oh! (laughter)

- It's definitely, nice to be able to feel supported

and to not be isolated.

To know that I'm not an army of one,

but actually an army of many.

So, it's great.

I am the public in Public Health: Jennifer's story - Duration: 0:51.

My son was born at 34 weeks old so he was the preemie.

And we were in the hospital for a few weeks before we were able to come home.

Once they discharged us they set me up with a home visit.

The reason I came to the Public Health centre and the breastfeeding clinic is because

my son was so tiny that I did have issues with the latch.

Up until then we had nurses in the hospital with any questions that we had

and then all sudden you take them home and you're on your own

and you're like, oh my gosh I have this teeny-tiny little baby and I have to take care of him

and so they gave me a huge sense of comfort.

It built my confidence as a mom and they were just such a big help for me.

Osinbajo, corruption fight and public opinion by Jerome-Mario Utomi - Duration: 8:13.

Editors note: One of the cardinal points of President Muhammadu Buhari during his electioneering campaign in 2015 is fight against corruption.

But there have been mixed reactions among Nigerians concerning the hype about the success recorded by Buhari-led administration in the war against corruption.

In an article sent to us, a social commentator, Jerome-Mario, writes about Vice President Yemi Osinbajos recent comment about the fight against corruption in Nigeria.

It is a deep-seated teaching within the religious circle that for a man to exist, comprehends, exercise and act; he must depend on a supernatural gift called grace.

Such 'grace' for political decisiveness seems to have been recently released upon our nation's Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbanjo as he against all permutations conceded that corruption still exists in President Buhari's administration.

Adding context, the Vice President, had while speaking at the 7th presidential quarterly business forum for private sector stakeholders in Aso Rock Villa, among other things stated as follows; 'that, there is grand corruption in the Nigeria public finance space, that Nigerian business environment is burdened with corruption, that corruption under this administration has not been completely dealt with; no, certainly not.

He also added that about three million Dollars, approximately one-tenth of our foreign reserves, was fleeced through a strategic alliance programme in recent times.

Certainly well crafted, with telling good intentions aimed at promoting openness and probity in our political space, the remark, in the Nigeria history has presented Professor Osinbajo as a desirable member of the league of very few Nigerian leaders who conceded that something may actually not be completely right with their administrations.

Against this backdrop, the VP, going by what the masses are saying, has made himself the symbolic 'pulpit' that expressed the silent fears of Nigerians who in recent times lampooned the purported corruption fight as more of a well said than a well-done affair.

But, the above scenario notwithstanding, knocks has, however, continued to greet the said remark as Nigerians have further spotted a gorge of discrepancy between the VP's remark as against what the administration is currently doing.

For instance, while the VP views corruption fight as work in progress, the vast majority of Nigerians believes that there is no such fight in the first place.

To some, the FG through its actions remains the major propeller of corruption while others are of the opinion that the supposed fight only exists in the frames.

Indeed, it appears that the fundamental factor responsible for the dust so raised by the remark is that, Nigerians are particularly not happy with this administration that promised to stamp out corruption but, instead, has unprecedentedly allowed it thrive.

To discerning minds, therefore, informing Nigerians that the same monster the administration promised to erase still exist three years after is synonymous with opening the paradox; a development that has further portrayed the government as a reality Nigerians should worry about.

The situation is even made worse by the inability of the FG to deliver the nation from the throes of economic hardship; prompting many to ask what the administration can point at as their achievements if they cannot fulfill the two cardinal promises of stamping out corruption and getting the nation's economy revamped.

In recent weeks also, there have been strong voices raised against the lackluster strategy in corruption fight in Nigeria with the most formidable of the voices coming from the Transparency International {TI).

The Group had in strong terms cautioned that corruption in Nigeria is on the increase and may slide from bad to worse if something dramatic is not done to get the situation arrested.

That report was described in the government quarters as out of tune and therefore discarded with the wave of hands. But with this comment by the number two citizen, the Transparency International (TI) and other critical minds have been vindicated.

To succeed in this job, what Nigerians are saying is that the strategy so far employed in the corruption fight is faulty and the government, lacking in political will.

What the concerned citizens are, therefore, demanding is the reinvigoration of the political will and review of the strategy so far used as no matter how beautiful a strategy may appear, there is a need for its periodic review.

From their current standpoint, what the masses expect from the VP in my views is not the announcement but, a template in place for ensuring 'that every dollar/naira in revenue would be properly accounted for and would reach the beneficiaries at the grassroots as one dollar, without being siphoned off along the way; block the areas where discretionary powers had been exploited for personal gains and sharpened the instruments that could prevent, detect or deter such practices'.

Very instructive also is the need for this administration to end this act of pointing to the former administration as the architect of their predicament which has become not just a familiar music hall firm but a trademark.

Such reasons generated daily can no longer be sustained as the people are of the opinion that the continuous searches for lost things remain the easiest way to waste both time and resources.

Going forward, the presidency should learn to depart this vicious circle of excuses as it is turning the entire administrative episode to an excruciating burden on the masses and may by implication inform as well as shape the 2019 electoral outing.

Aside the above, efforts should be made to prime and position the EFCC, the ICPC and the Nigeria police force to fight this monster.

This time is auspicious for us as a people to learn from the nations that have passed through this part as the masses are expecting from this administration not just stamping out corruption but a total creation of a sustainable socio-economic prosperity.

In making this call, I am well aware that there is nothing more 'difficult to handle, more doubtful of success, and more dangerous to carry through than initiating such changes as the innovator will make more enemies of all those who prospered under the old order.

But, any leader that do, come out powerful, secured, respected and happy. As the debate on corruption fight rages, Nigerians are inching for victory; a disposition that has further made winning not just compelling but inevitable.

I am the public in Public Health: Sara's story - Duration: 0:57.

I found out about the class through a friend that was pregnant.

We hadn't really talked much, and then I found out she was pregnant

I was pregnant, and she had been going to the class, so she brought me.

We'd have a whole session about labour and delivery

We could ask questions, they'd bring different diagrams.

She'd cover all different things about diet and health, and sleep habits for the child,

after it's born... things just to get us ready for the baby.

I kind of liked having somebody there that I could talk to that wasn't just my mom.

I feel better as a mother since going there.

If I have an issue with him, or if something bothers me, or if I don't know,

I know that next Tuesday when I go to my class, I can ask.

I am the public in Public Health: Xel's story - Duration: 0:49.

Whether you're a fast-food restaurant, or a fine-dining hotel,

or a super high-end hotel or a bar...we're all held to the same standards by Public Health.

There's a lot of things that you have to know.

And a lot of them, for me now, it's just kind of more or less, you know, second nature.

After a while you know the rules, you understand what you're supposed to be doing,

where things are supposed to be.

You understand temperatures of your refrigerators and things like that.

There's a reason Public Health exists.

I think that that standard in Ontario that everybody's gotten used to is, for the most part,

is because of Public Health.

Ohio Pro Sport Teams Want More Public Money - Duration: 3:33.

IF YOU ADD A LIGHTER TOPIC, IF

YOU ADD UP ALL THE TEAM VALUES,

THE CLEVELAND BROWNS, CAVALIERS

AND INDIANS, THE CINCINNATI

BENGALS, REDS AND THE SOCCER

TEAM, WHICH LACKS A NAME, AND

THE COLUMBUS CLIPPERS AND BLUE

JACKETS, THE TOTAL VALUE OF ALL

THOSE TEAMS JUST LESS THAN $7

BILLION.

THEY PLAY IN PLACES PAID FOR IN

PART OR IN FULL BY TAXPAYERS.

STILL, THEY WANT THE STATE TO

INCREASE THE AMOUNT OF MONEY,

PUBLIC MONEY AVAILABLE TO

ATTRACT BIG SPORTING EVENTS TO

THE STATE.

THINGS LIKE ALL-STAR GAMES AND

THE NFL DRAFT, EVENTS THAT DO

BRING IN A LOT OF MONEY TO THE

STATE IN TERMS OF TOURISM

DOLLARS AND SALES TAXES.

JIM SIEGEL, WHY DO THEY NEED

MORE MONEY, THESE TEAMS, LEAGUES

WORTH SO MUCH MONEY?

>> THE TEAMS SAY THIS IS NOT

ABOUT THEIR MONEY.

THIS IS ABOUT MONEY TO HELP THE

CITIES, HELP THE COUNTIES, HELP

THE REGIONAL SPORTS COMMISSIONS

PAY EXPENSES NEEDED TO BRING IN

MAJOR EVENTS.

THE TEAMS SAY THEY DON'T MAKE

MONEY ON THESE.

THIS IS A COMMUNITY OUTREACH

THEY LIKE BUT AT THE END OF THE

DAY IT'S NOT SO MUCH A REVENUE

GENERATOR FOR THE TEAM SO MUCH

AS JUST GOODWILL, GOOD PR AND A

BENEFIT FOR THE AREA.

THAT'S WHERE THEY'RE COME FROM.

THERE'S SOME QUESTIONS ABOUT HOW

THIS BILL WOULD WORK BECAUSE IT

HAS TO DO WITH HOW MUCH

ADDITIONAL SALES TAX WILL BE

BENEFITTED AND WE TAKE HALF OF

THAT AND PUT IT IN THE FUND.

THE QUESTION OF HOW DO YOU

DETERMINE HOW MUCH SALES TAX IS

BECAUSE OF THE EVENT AND HOW

MUCH SALES TAX IS JUST BECAUSE

OF STUFF THAT WOULD HAVE

HAPPENED ANYWAY.

THERE'S A LOT OF QUESTIONS ABOUT

IT.

>> WE HAVE ONE OF THE WORST

UNEMPLOYMENT RATES IN AMERICA.

WE HAVE A LOT OF JOBS THAT PAY

OVER $50,000 A YEAR THAT WE

DON'T HAVE ANYBODY THAT'S

QUALIFIED TO HOLD THEM BECAUSE

THEY'RE NOT PROPERLY TRAINED AND

BECAUSE GETTING COLLEGE OR

ADVANCED EDUCATION IS REALLY

IMPORTANT.

WHY DON'T WE FOCUS ON STUFF LIKE

THAT INSTEAD OF GIVING MONEY TO

THE SPORTS TEAM?

>> YOU GOING TO THE CAVS GAME

AFTER YOU LEAVE THE STUDIO?

>> YEAH, BUT GIVE ME A BREAK.

THIS IS A TERRIBLE IDEA IF THE

LEGISLATURE PASSES THIS.

WE DIDN'T EVEN MENTION HOLLYWOOD

HAS COME IN.

THEY GET $40 MILLION A YEAR IN

TAX BREAKS.

THEY WANT TO INCREASE THAT TO

$100 MILLION.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME?

THESE ARE TERRIBLE IDEAS.

>> AS SOON AS I CAN FIND OUT HOW

MUCH THAT PRIVATE GROUP THAT

TAKES LIQUOR PROFITS FROM THE

STATE OF OHIO AND SPENDS IT ON

GENERATING JOBS IN OHIO, JOBS

OHIO, SO I CAN FIND OUT MORE

ABOUT WHAT THEY'RE SPENDING

MONEY ON, I DON'T CARE ABOUT ANY

OF THIS.

>> I FIND IT ODD THAT THE

CINCINNATI REDS SAID THEY DIDN'T

HAVE ACCESS TO THE MONEY WHEN

THEY WANTED TO BRING THE

ALL-STAR GAME HERE IN 2015 AND

THE BLUE JACKETS SAID THEY

DIDN'T HAVE ANY MONEY TO BRING

THE ALL-STAR GAME IN 2015.

BOTH THOSE EVENTS OCCURRED IN

THOSE CITIES WITHOUT THE STATE'S

HELP.

>> THE ALL-STAR GAME IN

CINCINNATI ENDED UP GETTING

HELP.

>> THAT'S A DIFFERENT -- A

DIFFERENT FUND OR A DIFFERENT

WAY.

>> OKAY.

THE QUESTION IS, COULD WE STILL

DO THESE THINGS WITHOUT THIS

MONEY?

THAT'S A LONG ONGOING DEBATE

THAT WILL CONTINUE.

IT'S NOT JUST ABOUT ATTRACTING

THESE BUT A WHOLE BUNCH OF

THINGS.

WOULD WE STILL ATTRACT TAX CUTS

AND ALL THESE KIND OF THINGS.

THE BROWNS TESTIFIED IN FAVOR OF

THIS BILL.

IF IT PASSES, THEY CAN CHALK IT

UP AS A WIN.

>> YES, THEY CAN.

I'm originally from Sri Lanka and my children were born in Canada.

Visits to the school by the Public Health services is a tremendous support.

All my children received dental services like pre-assessment and cleaning of dental as well.

They looked at my teeth and they said I need to brush

every morning and every night to keep them clean.

They start from the school, which is a good one from children, and then to the families and their

services are provided which is the best way of kind of linking the health issues

and providing the services.
