A dad-of-two was found dead in his Turkey hotel room a day after being allegedly attacked during a brawl at a British pub, a court heard
Simon Marx, 42, was found unresponsive by his distraught partner Louise Darnborough after suffering a fatal brain injury, a trial was told
The court previously heard that Simon was subjected to blows, stamps and punches during an incident at the Newton Arms, in Blackpool
Steven Christopher Lane, 29, and David Easter, 54, deny his murder and are on trial at Preston Crown Court
Jurors were read a statement by Louise, who woke up in the middle of the night and found him dead in their hotel room
She described how the HGV driver had been 'sick and sweating' shortly after they arrived at their resort hotel in Turkey, around 30 hours after the alleged attack
Prosecuting, Gordon Coles QC said Simon was subject to blows and stamps - punches from Easter and stamps inflicted by Lane
He said: "We say that both of these defendants exhibited in, and by their actions, that they had the requisite intention for murder, namely they both intended really serious harm
" Mr Coles described a background in which, in April last year, Simon's friend, Gavin Ramsay, had spoken to Lane of an "issue between them" about something Lane had reportedly been saying
The court heard that on October 6, Simon went out drinking with Gavin and friend Rick Alston
They were dropped off at Marton Social Club in Blackpool, around 6.30pm and consumed five or six pints of lager or cider each, before taking a taxi the Newton Arms, at around 10pm
Lane, Easter and his son Joe, and their friend David Formby also met in the pub at 10pm that night
Both parties shared a drink and seemed to resolved previous issues; however, the scene soon turned hostile a short time later, the court heard
Mr Cole said: "The violence inside started, we say, as a result of David Easter punching Simon Marx a number of times to the head or face and those punches caused him to fall to the floor
"He tried to get his feet, but was knocked back to the floor very very quickly. "Bearing in mind what had just happened with Mr Easter, bearing in mind where Mr Marx was standing, we say the inference is it was Steven Lane who knocked him to the floor the second time
"Simon Marx was stamped on by Steven Lane while he was unconscious on the floor
"What was happening to Simon Marx caused Rick Alston to go to try to protect Simon Marx and as he did so, he describes a glass smashing against his head
" The court heard Roy Croft saw Lane stamping down with "incredible force" to Simon's head
His leg was raised fully and was stamping down some three times. In interview, Easter accepted pushing Simon but said his actions were in self-defence and that he would have been unable to punch him due to an injury to his hand
He later changed his account and accepted punching him. In Lane's first interview he gave a vague account of punching Rick Alston once in "self-defence" but denied stamping on or glassing anyone
He said CCTV would support what witnesses had described and added: "We say it is a perfect example of a joint attack by both defendants behaving in the way they did
" Louise described Simon as a "hardworking" man who liked to socialise with friends
She said: "Simon worked as an HGV driver and had always worked hard, and at the same time he always liked to socialise with friends
"I got home around 6pm and Simon was already home and getting showered to go out with his friends
" In text messages the next day he told her his friend Rick had been glassed and that he had stayed with him
She went to drop his key off at the barber where he was having his hair cut. Louise said: " Whilst at the barbers I saw Simon had blood on his T-shirt, on his collar and down his shirt
I did not discuss the blood as I was in a rush to get ready for going on holiday
" She described him falling asleep several times on the way to, and in, the airport, and was "acting a bit sluggish" as they walked to check in
She said he appeared all right during the flight, but his health declined after they arrived at the hotel at around 3am on October 8
She said: "The porter came and asked if he was OK and I said no, I was going to get the doctor in the morning
"Suddenly Simon said he was going to be sick. He was sick by the main room door all over the floor
"I was wiping Simon with a towel all over his body he was sweating that much." He was sick several more times before she placed him on his side in bed and they went to sleep, the court heard
She added: "I was awoken by the sound of a heavy gasp. I got out of bed and saw he had been sick on the pillow
"I tried to shake him by pushing his shoulder but got no response - I knew there was something wrong
" She described frantically slapping him before calling the reception for the doctor, then opening their door and screaming for help
Another hotel resident took Louise to their room, but around 45 minutes later the hotel manager came to inform her he had passed away, the court heard
