- What are you doing
- Get the (bleep) out of here man.
We're (bleep) busy. Get out of here.
- Whoa! - (bleep) off dude.
- I'm going to have to ask you to stop.
- You stay there we'll be back later.
What're you doing man.
- Stop man.
- (bleep) you - Don't-
(thrilling music)
(gunshots)
(baby cries)
- Don't you move!
(thrilling music)
- [Announcer] Welcome to First Person Defender.
Where regular people come face to face
with unknown attackers in real world scenarios,
and fight their way out. (gunshots)
This is First Person Defender.
- Today on First Person Defender,
we're at the six hour academy with Mike.
He carries every day, but should he intervene
when he hears some strangers having an altercation?
- [Announcer] This force on force training
uses real firearms converted to fire marking cartridges.
The crew wears yellow shirts,
and are considered to be invisible to role players.
Mike stopped off the grab a snack.
While at the rest stop, he's faced
with a difficult decision to intervene or retreat.
Is he ready to handle the situation?
- Let's finish what we started.
This is (bleep)!
Can't believe you'd turn me down at the bar like that.
You're coming home with me tonight.
(woman screams)
Shut up! - You doing alright?
- You can't be such a tease at the bar.
It's going to happen, whether you like it of not.
- Help! Help! - Hey what's going on?
- Hey! What're you doing? - (bleep) we're fucking busy
- Get out of here!
- Whoa. I'm going to have to ask you to back off.
- (bleep) off dude.
- You stay there we'll be back later.
What are you doing man?
- Stop man.
- (bleep)
- Don't-
(Gunshots)
(thrilling music)
Are you alright?
- [Woman] I'm good.
- Call 911.
(thrilling music)
- Alright Mike, so you're sitting there having a snack,
and tell me how everything went down.
- Yeah, so it seems to be that I'm hearing
some sort of altercation going on,
so went to go investigate,
and so I went in there I pulled my gun.
I think I pulled my gun a little early,
'cause I wasn't sure what exactly
was going on at that moment.
- What made you decide to pull it?
What made you decide to pull it?
- [Mike] Well he had her cornered up against the wall,
and from step one that's just not a safe scenario,
I mean something's clearing going down in here.
First of all, he's in the women's bathroom,
and they're yelling at one another, so.
- Okay and then what happened?
- And then he sort of freaked out a little bit,
and then he came towards me.
It looked like he was pulling a knife so,
I shot him.
Told the female to call 911,
and we exited.
- What were you thinking the whole time.
When you're trying to process this.
- Honestly, happened very fast, but I was just thinking,
something's going wrong I'm going to step in
and see what the issue is.
Things escalated.
- You got involved.
- Yes. Yes, I got involved.
- Did you know these people?
- I didn't know these people, no.
- Did you know their backstory, or what-
- No not at all.
- Do they know each other?
- As far as I know, I don't know.
- So, nice job.
Alright so let's talk about, maybe a couple of things
that could have gone differently.
- Sure.
- [Eric] So you're in a training environment,
you're expecting something to happen right?
- [Mike] Right.
- [Eric] We put you in this gear.
You're expecting a scenario where you're going
to have to get involved, right?
So I think, realistically do you think you would have
been so quick to jump up and immediately intervene
just off of a couple of, you know,
word's being shouted back and forth?
- Probably not. Probably not.
- It's key I think, at the beginning of this,
when this all starts to happen,
when you think it's something that you might
feel the need to intervene in its probably something
that the police should be here for.
(mechanical whirring)
- It's important to have something to work on
when you go to the range to shoot.
Don't just yank the trigger and send bullets down range.
One of the things I like to work on is front sight focus.
We're working with the Ruger SR 1911 in 9 millimeter.
And this is a compact package.
This can absolutely be a carry gun.
(magazine clicks into place)
But one of the first things,
starting out slow, getting warmed up,
is just that front sight focus.
So let's just do a dry fire here.
(gun clicks)
And that's what it should look like.
(gun loading sound)
Now let's do it live fire.
(gunshot)
(gunshot)
(gunshot)
The temptation when stuff goes down
is to look down range at the bad guy,
but you have to practice,
and focus on the front sight when you're using iron sights.
It'll make you a better shooter.
(gunshot)
(gunshot)
(mechanical whirring)
- So let's say whatever the situation was
escalated to the point where
you felt like you needed to intervene, right?
Heard yelling.
Heard screaming.
You felt that she was definitely in harm's way, right?
So now, let's talk about the door.
When you open the door, just kinda show me,
if you remember, what did it look like?
- I think it looked a little something like this.
- Right, okay.
- Just completely exposed myself.
Wasn't sure what was in there.
- Right.
- Disaster.
- Okay so here I am to save the day type of thing, right.
- Thank you.
- Alright.
So let's talk about the right way.
So obviously the way you just did it,
you're exposing yourself to whatever's in that room.
- Right.
- Whatever unknown threat could be in that room, right?
Mike so what I would do in this situation is
keep cover if I can, right?
And then just lean over with my hand,
and just push that door open, get a snap shot,
and then come into this space.
So, you make your way into the room.
- Yeah.
- Again you said that gun came out,
even immediately after the scenario,
that was one of the things that you self critiqued.
I was really quick to take the gun out.
- Yeah, too soon.
- So, now from that point, what happens?
You start to talk to him.
He sees the gun in your hand.
- Start talking to him.
He sees the gun.
He starts to get a little freaked out by that,
and then he starts advancing toward me,
And what it looks like, he's pulling a knife.
- Besides pulling the gun right away,
what's something that you might have done?
From this point.
As soon as he started something at you with that knife.
- I definitely would have started
to make steps in the opposite direction.
- There you go.
- And situational awareness.
Knowing that the door's going to close behind me,
I need to address that as well.
- I gotcha.
Alright, I agree 100%, right?
That not a whole lot of room in this-
- No.
- In this small space
to create distance right? - No, not at all.
- But I'm going to get as much space as I can.
When that knife's coming out, you know,
you have to create that space.
One more thing, where I think you, maybe,
got exceptionally lucky,
is lets say that female had drifted out.
The perpetrator was here,
she ended up in there, and you got some shots off,
which probably would have worked out okay,
but if she had gotten behind him,
do you think you would have had
the presence of mind to not take shots?
- I hope so.
(mechanical whirring)
- [Announcer] First Person Defender brought to you by:
Springfield Armory
ShopGunTalk.com
GunDealio
and Ruger.
(mechanical whirring)
(gunshots)
- Drop the gun! Drop the gun!
(gunshots)
- Somebody call the police!
Guy just tried to shoot me.
'Kay so here we are at the six-hour academy
in our indoor shoot house.
As you can see I was confronted with a deadly threat.
I acted what I thought was accordingly at the time,
but not so good.
Kinda, showed you what not to do.
I did take care of the threat,
but it you look around it,
just around the other side you'll see
two innocent people directly behind him,
which also took rounds. Okay?
So the rounds penetrated through the threat and into them,
okay? Not a good thing.
How do I fix it?
Something as simple as stepping off to the side.
Okay, it's going to do two things.
It's gonna to take me off the line of attack from him,
and it's also gonna create a better angle.
Insuring that I'm not going to shoot through him
into somebody innocent. Right?
So I'll go ahead and try to do it the right way this time.
Drop the gun! Drop the gun!
(gunshots)
(thrilling music)
(gunshot)
(gunshot)
- Drop the gun! Drop the gun!
(gunshots)
- Somebody call 911!
That guy just tried to shoot me.
So as you can see from looking at the targets, okay.
I probably accomplished what I was trying
to do with the threat.
And that's simply to stop the threat.
Okay. The threat's been stopped.
This time with a simple side step.
Took me out of his line of attack,
and also created a good angle,
insuring that I didn't shoot the innocent people
that were directly behind.
(gunshots)
(mechanical whirring)
- What I've got here is the Springfield Armory XDM OSP,
Optical Sight Pistol.
More and more pistols are coming ready with red dots on 'em.
So you can get this with the Vortex Venom,
with the suppressor height sights,
and also a threaded barrel.
Pretty cool.
There's a reason why people like red dots on guns.
They're very quick.
(gunshots)
Frankly, as a home defense gun,
this is kind of like the ultimate night sight, right?
And, you know, a suppressor, shooting indoors?
Might be a good idea too.
So, take a look at it.
Get some practice on it, and you'll get fast.
(gunshots)
(mechanical whirring)
(thrilling music)
- [Announcer] In this scenario,
Mike finds himself at the same rest stop.
Is his training enough to handle an aggressive assailant?
- [Assailant] We're going to do this
whether you like it or not!
- [Victim] Please! No! No!
Stop do get me! No!
- [Assailant] We're going to do this
whether you like it or not!
- [Victim] No! No!
- [Assailant] You asked for it.
I've had enough of you're (bleep)
- Hello 911?
I have a domestic going on at the Buzzy's Bipass
off 101 exit 6.
From a six foot Caucasian male, and I am 'bout to go on in.
- Go.
- [Assailant] Shut your mouth.
We're gonna do this.
- [Victim] Somebody! Stop him!
- Hey what's going on in there?
What are you doing?
- Shut up!
Get the (bleep) out of here!
- You can't do that get off it!
Hey! Stop that!
- Stop it.
- Get out of here bro.
- No. No.
- I got a gun.
What do you think you got? - I need you to stop
what you're doing.
- What're you going to do about it?
(gunshots)
- You alright?
- Help me. - Come to me. Come to me.
(Sliding of the gun across the floor)
(thrilling music)
- Alright Mike, the scenario starts the same.
- It does.
- Tell me about what happened.
Obviously you'd taken some of that training into account.
- Yup yup. Eric did a great job with me, I think.
And I hope I portrayed that in the rerun.
[Mike] I here what's going on.
Seems to be a domestic.
I think before I act.
I call 911. Tell them who I am.
That I carry a gun.
Where I'm at.
I think I did a decent job in opening the door,
and seeing the entire room.
- When you open the door what did you see?
- [Mike] I saw a male pinning a female up against,
what seemed to be the back stall.
- Some of the stuff, you didn't go to the gun as quickly.
- No. No. I think I learned my lesson the first time.
I only went to the gun when he showed me
that he had his own in a threatening manner.
- Where was everyone positioned,
and what were you seeing as far as that goes?
- [Mike] The female seemed to be within the stall
at the end, and he approached me center room,
and it seemed like the back stop,
in that situation, was clear.
When I did make my shots, or at least,
in my head, it seemed like I was leaning
to make sure that those shots would be on target,
and not potentially hit the woman in the stall.
- At some point you get outside that door,
and you made the determination.
What was the determining factor
for you to actually go in there?
- You kept hearing the noises over and over again.
I feel like if something's gonna happen
it's gonna happen sooner,
before someone else shows up to intervene.
- So you basically made a split-second decision
based on the totality of the circumstances.
That whatever was going on, potentially,
we couldn't wait on the police.
You knew they were coming.
You did the right thing. Called 911,
but you felt that you had to intervene, right?
So I think, all in all, very very good.
I'm happy with it.
I hope you are.
- You were a great coach.
- Alright nice job.
(mechanical whirring)
(dramatic music)
