don't getting up on
hello everybody and welcome back to abominations in Technicolor the podcast
we review the overlooked underrated and critically panned films of the past in a
new light my name is Matt cook and I'm joined as always by my co-host my
brother Adam how's it going Adam hey what's going on
late-night podcast I've got my caffeine free 7up here
tribute to Orlando Jones gotta love what happened to Orlando Jones I know you
know but those were some great commercials back in the day and not only
the Orlando Jones 7up commercials remember the what were the little the
little 7up red little circles oh yeah they stopped doing those yeah I always
loved those commercials especially around Christmas time yeah yeah I was
talking to some co-workers about the raisins commercials earlier about how
they'd always have them like doing song and dance like the temptations and chip
oh you have the California Raisins yeah that was good stuff bring them back we
want them that would be awesome if they did but in other news we're gonna be
talking about some some trailers here a little bit later on the show we'll be
reviewing the great snowboarding comedy out cold from 2001 I'm excited to get
into that one but there's a couple trailers we want to talk about one was
child's play we reviewed that movie I think that was right before Halloween
early October I think we we covered that one on the show so we had a blast doing
that one I forgot how crazy that movie was but yeah it was a pretty much total
shit show it's completely nuts but a new trailer dropped for child's play it's
entirely it's an entirely reboot and comes out I
think it comes out in this summer I thought I saw like a June or July
release date for this thing I don't know it's always hard to tell us some of
these horror or just smaller movies sometimes they have a release date but
it's kind of just a placeholder and they they might move right so I don't know if
this this might actually come out around Halloween time but it could always fall
back to Halloween yeah but what were your sort of thoughts and take away from
this little teaser it's only like a minute longer so yeah so it's pretty
short well I definitely like caught the that they announcing the same producers
as as it yeah accent release of that and I think they do a good job of kind of
like creating this dark tone but then having these bright vibrant colors and
it's also nice to see them go back to kind of the original Chucky rather than
these like variations that we've seen in the other however many what 9 or yeah oh
yeah it is awesome yeah we don't need the Bride of Chucky cult and the seed of
Chucky Chucky we just want the good guy doll you know but um do you notice that
a it was just like a my buddy or something like that or yeah they
definitely they're definitely sort of changing sort of the origin or kind of
the I guess the kind of basis of the doll now visually I mean the faint sort
of portrait or silhouette you we can see of Chucky or honey I don't know if we're
gonna if he's gonna be called Chucky in this movie I hope so that's kind of I'll
come on he's gotta be hey you never know but maybe he's called Charles who knows
but yeah he basically looks the same but they're sort of updating the doll for
modern times now I don't know do do some do some I don't know the good guy was
mainly you know geared towards like five to 10 year old boys you know he's kind
of like a handyman I guess I don't know yeah I almost felt like the kid seemed a
little old to have the doll I agree so it looks like they're updating it in
terms of like the technology within the DAO but yeah is it is it gonna be sort
of like the AI goes haywire and it causes this doll to can wreak havoc that
probably better than what's-his-name Charles Lee ray or yeah
what's the do yeah something like that that guy like summon some like voodoo
spell to like put himself out of his human body and into a dowel to evade or
kind of escape from the detective at the last second before his human body dies
yeah I mean well I guess I don't I don't really care how the doll is like
possessed I just sort of care about like the personality of the doll no yeah now
with it being more so like an AI that to me sounds less human and a little bit
more robotic what I liked about that 1989 Chucky you know was how how human
that doll was how it was this this sleazy scumbag psychopath in a 2-foot
doll throwing ladies out of windows you know right yeah with a total foul potty
mouth yeah for sure yeah that's what made that character great so I I hope
they don't shy away from that angle of the character that's that's what I love
about Chucky I hope they bring back Brad Dourif to voice the dowel like I want a
foul-mouthed Chucky that's what I want to see speaking of
Brad Dourif we also caught a trailer for a little
talking yeah Brad Dourif related to tolki and obviously through the two
towers we know him as Wormtongue right yeah yep corrupting a king
theoden's mind yep but what did you think about tolki in this trailer
I mean for me I think it kind of looks like a not a spinoff of Lord of the
Rings or The Hobbit obviously but like this kind of goes kind of like your your
Finding Neverland you're saving mr. banks or like these kind of movies that
like go into the making of stories and stuff like that right you know like what
what do you make of of talking first-look well I mean I don't know how
I guess I don't really understand other than it's hard to tell from just like a
I mean this teasers literally 55 seconds and that includes like the intro and the
sort of like yeah the end tag on it so it's like 45 seconds long of like yeah
clips and footage but I guess I'm just curious as to what sort of story are
they trying to tell is it sort of maybe how he came up or what the inspiration
was for all these great stories that the guy came up with yeah you know that kind
of appears to be like there's they're sort of flavors of Sauron and right
there was some of the some of the trees reminded me of like I don't know trees
that you would see in like an elven forest and right like that so but I
don't really know much about Tolkien's like personal life so I'm right I think
I'm more curious about that I think it would be also cool to kind of learn
more about what like sparked some of these ideas and yeah inspired him to
come up with these stories I don't Rea know sort of how that all came about but
I hope they can pull it off yeah I mean this guy I mean it was all in his mind
it's not like this guy I don't think he was uh I think he was an Oxford
professor so it's not like the guy had a you know I don't know if he was in like
World War one or what but I don't know I think I'm just more curious to just kind
of know more about the guy yeah well I look at it like it's a movie that we
didn't really know we were gonna get and it's you know about kind of an origins
of one of my all-time favorite stories of all time so I mean there's not really
anything about it that there's that's not too like for me at least so I'm like
super interested my expectations aren't super high just because it's it's just
kind of this like supplemental kind of thing like I don't think anybody expects
it to be like an oscar movie or anything like that but it's great to have kind of
like a tribute to someone who you know gave us some of the best like lore and
and so many different types of like imaginative creatures and characters and
and and folklore or whatever you want to call it like comes from Tolkien isn't
and is inspired by him so I absolutely love the idea of just having something
like this to just kind of like sit back and enjoy and absorb and hopefully it's
a nice tribute and a good story and you know it's an enjoyable movie to watch
but we'll see yeah it could be great it could be a mediocre we'll see you before
um but yeah anything sort of anything sort of revolving around the Lord of the
Rings franchise definitely has the both of us interested
and it's got beast in it man yes yeah nicholas hoult is I think yeah he's a
pretty damn good actor hello like him yeah I think I think he
needs to pop up and some more stuff I mean I saw that movie collide with him
and um what's her name Emilia Clarke now GZA jyn erso Felicity Jones other yeah
gotcha Felicity showers actress yeah that movie
it was a train wreck but didn't see it not many people did Adam won Matt zero
yeah so but I I have faith in this I think I think it should be a good time
I'm also excited for that Lord of the Rings Amazon series that's eventually
coming down the pipeline names I'm paid 500 million dollars for the rights for
that thing nice so you bet your ass they're gonna
make sure that shows good so that's gonna be like their Game of Thrones nice
but I think we'd start heading into our our main topic of discussion this week
it's time to get into some out cold and now our feature presentation
you all know the rules of king of the mountain
the first ones at the bottom with the most beer in your glass shall be
proclaimed this year's king of the mountain pushing shoving and cheating
are encouraged
he is the greatest man I've ever known in a place where the thrill is all that
matters
Rick Rambis and his friends are the best of the best they know what they want I
know that I'm in love with him have you told her this no you've got to carpe the
diem seize the card and they're always willing he's passed out of pudding in
Rick's car Mike you're behind to push things over
the edge 1 2 3
I'm not gonna lose you again so still want a hookup
you're gonna have to try a lot harder than that Rick so still knock out the
competition is on wish me luck guys this is gonna be it let's make it
count
Oh cold all right ladies and gentlemen out cold from 2001 this is a film that
had a twenty four million dollar budget and managed to make a kind of a measly
thirteen point nine million domestically fourteen point seven worldwide so
obviously the vast majority of its dollars were earned in the US and you
know I could see why this would be more appealing to the US crowd not kind of a
world base but you know it came out in a year that had some heavy hitters in the
mix you've got films like Lord of the Rings in the Fellowship of the Ring
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone which I think that did that not break
records Harry Potter the first ah I believe so I
think that may have been the number one grossing movie that year I think so I
think so and then Ocean's eleven also so you know there's there's a stiff
competition there out cold not one of those types of films now
obviously it's in its own its own species of movie but but yeah Rotten
Tomatoes has this movie at a an abysmal eight percent 8 percent of critics gave
it a positive review interesting however the audience score that really matters
we have a score of eighty four percent so that right there is the reason we're
talking about this one so directed by Brennan and Emmett Malloy
I think that this film is one that is significantly and severely overlooked
and this takes me back to my like like freshman year of high school or eighth
grade or something in that time timeframe and it's like my youth on a
disc and yeah oh my god even the you know
whether it be the music or the one-liners in this movie like I from the
moment I saw this movie I knew that I was going to be able to watch it over
and over and over and over and always laugh my ass off and sure enough I
watched it the other night and I was laughing my ass off so you
know thank you Zach Galifianakis and company because I
think this movie is a lot of fun I don't I don't even care what Roper and those
dudes would have to say about it you know yeah I mean just trying to like
find some other sort of resources that came out back in the day at the you know
I couldn't find any clip of Ebert or Roeper reviewing this movie and you know
just just searching that I didn't find really anybody else that had made
reviews for this film like on YouTube right normally you can find tons of
other reviews that people have done over the years for movies that came out a
while ago but I saw like maybe two to three reviews for out cold and that's
kind of sad because I remember seeing I'm fairly certain I saw this in
theaters and I loved this movie as a kid and you know it's just it's completely
outrageous there's some some great characters in this but you know Zach
Galifianakis god bless the dude but um rewatching this movie you know I watched
this on HBO and yeah you know how when you start a movie is sort of it says the
movie and then it lists like the rating and why it's that rating right I could
have swore this movie was rated R I don't know why I maybe thought that I
mean there's some some profanity in this film but I don't know I just
it sort of strop bad I don't know maybe I was sort of view like thinking back to
it in terms of like old school and some of those like
wedding crashers like those types of movies back in the day I don't know I've
sort of even kind of like the American Pie movies yeah I was sort of batching
it in with those yeah yeah I think this film is kind of like it's like American
Pie meets what are those movies like ski patrol her it wasn't there like a ski
patrol I don't know drantch eyes of movies like they were just these like
dumb like ski movies I think Johnny tsunami yeah well that Johnny tsunami
now hey now we don't have time to talk about China I needs its own episode but
do you remember kind of the first time like you'd mentioned when you were
looking through it recently but do you remember kind of first witnessing the
movie not really I can't recall I mean I I must have been maybe I don't know 11
maybe 10 years old at the time yeah probably 11 at the time 11 or 12
the only thing I remember about watching the first time I know for sure I didn't
see it in the theater like probably most people but when we were first watching
it I remember the line where they're just starting to do king of the mountain
and and Luke zach galifianakis is reading off the rules he says the rule
number one you do not talk about king of the my head rule number two there are no
rules and then one of them asks what about rule number one he goes that's
more of a guideline than the rule do not interrupt me and I just remember him
delivering that line much better than I did and laughing like so hard like this
guy has some like serious like flavor of comedy that I've never tasted both
or yeah and it he's you know in there throughout doing his thing and every
scene is like fantastic so you know in first viewing I was just like so excited
like this movies you know the beginning is you get stumped be kind of
introducing Papa Muntz and his moonshine run yeah bull mountain don't go don't go
changin yeah all of that is kind of like really Campion it's just kind of like ah
this movie's gonna be lying yeah and pretty like stupid and ridiculous but
once you really get into it and start digging in and you know it's not perfect
and not everybody is good in it and it's you know kind of running on fumes as far
as like the complexity of the plot and things like that go but but man it's
just it's really fun and funny like really funny at least I think so in it
it's probably not for everyone but it's it is for me that's for sure yeah I
guess let's sort of get into the plot of the movie so basically I don't remember
them the months who's that what's the son's name who who owns bull mountain
oh that's Ted Ted months Ted months his dad passed away must have been a couple
years ago at this point I think yep and he inherited the the mountain bull
mountain and he doesn't appear to be the sort of guy that's really interested in
owning a mountain at all you know this is like he seems to be sort of a lot
different than his father was yeah so he sells it to Lee Majors is that John mate
Lee Majors as beyond mate that always confused me as he is this case you just
give them like an actual character name like what the hell's wisest last name
after me majors right yeah it's confusing so he decides
to sell the mountain to to him and he pretty much comes in and starts cleaning
house and this sort of group of characters that were following along or
losing their jobs and trying to figure out what to do as as Rick Rambis king of
the mountain is uh you know getting promoted as his friends are getting
fired and he comes to the realization that he doesn't want to do I have
anything to do with this and you know they somehow come up with a plan I guess
you could say - yeah sort of watch this this sort of a sale or I guess sort of
event to kind of showcase this new ski resort that bull mountains been turned
into but mainly we just sort of followed this this group of characters in
Westland do crazy shit and and much of it is related to Rick Rambis --is kind
of love from his trip to Cancun Ana who he can't get over and he finds that she
is majors daughter and she shows up and there's a lot of like him trying to win
her back and and or let her go and blah blah blah and there's kind of this like
push and pull romantic piece of the movie weaved in there that doesn't
really amount to much but um you know it has to kind of fill the gaps I guess
yeah it's sort of the thread that kind of weaves the movie along I guess yep
sort of pushes pushes Rick along this little this little journey I guess yep
but yeah I think you hit most of the the points I mean you've got this group of
guys they all work for the resort and it's all they have they're not educated
they're not really guild you can see some of them do kind
of like the snowboarding instructions and stuff like that some of them work
the the lifts but they all need you know they have nothing without it so it's you
know this kind of story of like how are they gonna kind of band together as as
friends and try to save the mountain and you know they talk about Papa Muntz
wanted Rick Rambis to run the mountain he just didn't want him to run the
mountain under John Major's he didn't want him to run snow nope he wanted him
to run bull mountain yeah I guess like I could have done without some of the the
romantic stuff that's kind of some of my least favorite I guess we're getting
right a lot of that stuff later on but this I guess I could I think I mentioned
this I don't know if it was last episode or what but when this movie came out
like we're talking appeared in time where extreme sports were you know that
was some of the most watched stuff on TV you had Tony Hawk he you know he hit the
900 in the late 90s and you had the jackass guys and yeah Tony Hawk pro
skater the video game yeah some of the massive some of those were the biggest
video games on the market so this whole sort of industry was really booming at
this point in time was when this movie came out and I think they were sort of
hoping that that would sort of drive the box office for this movie and it clearly
didn't but you know I don't know I just think this movie has some of the some of
the best comedy in it for the for the time it came out like it it just I don't
know it's in that has a lot to do with Zach Galifianakis but there's also some
great sort of supporting characters in there that I mean I can't even remember
the last time I saw them in some thing like the guy who playing pen-like
right and I like the chemistry between these guys in just the it's just like a
bunch of dudes like you said who are you know slaving away on this this ski
resort for whatever reason you know you don't really know much about them other
than you know they're not the the most intelligent people and they don't have a
lot of money and it's just kind of a job they have to do to get by and they're
just sort of living kind of paycheck to paycheck that's kind of the life through
living yeah I kind of got to feel that like Rick Rambis and Luke are kind of
best friends and these guys are kind of the other friends you know I mean I kind
of felt like Luke was always the one that's kind of in his ear like the voice
of reason or giving him and sometimes his advice was kind of like yeah not
really the greatest or it was kind of just silly but but he's always telling
them to take his head out of his ass and stuff like that and you know get your
did you get your dejected head out of your dejected ass is that what he says
something like yeah but yeah I I after watching this movie like right when it
came out and knowing then Zach Galifianakis like I feel like in this
movie I appreciated his performance and his County so much that I think I felt
like proud of myself like I was like in you know early like like these people
that think the hangover is so awesome and you know like like the just kind of
getting to know him in that movie I was like I already know Zach Galifianakis
like I watched that gal Phinehas when he's was an on out cold but you haven't
seen how cold what are you talking about that means yeah
um you know his career after this movie really kind of took off and it was at
Todd Phillips that did the hangover right yeah yep so I mean like you know
they get to that kind of level and level of Fame and he still steals the show and
everything he's in I mean he did did the movie with Robert Downey jr. where they
do the yadu date Sam yeah dude a this funny you know I like
his comedy special live at the Purple Onion that's really hilarious like
seeing him play piano and do comedy oh yeah I mean it's just kind of it's like
it's just like this like one one joke after another none of them really like
go together it's just kind of like hitting you with like rapid shots of
hilarity shit he was even in Birdman which was like I don't remember I don't
think that did that win Best Picture yeah I think it might have or screenplay
or something like that yeah it wasn't something they had to of I don't know
sounds like you're looking it up and I'm looking it up it did yeah yeah yeah I
believe it yeah he was like the stage manager of that whole play in that flick
but yeah Zach Galifianakis man the guy you sort of touched on like
you had never seen like comedy like that before right and it's it's the slight
inflections that the guy delivers like it's the the way he looks at the camera
or the person he's talking to you know like there's stuff happening in that
dudes brain yeah like that it's it's the way he talks and just the things that he
says they just kind of like come out of nowhere right I mean there there's a lot
of funny stuff that they do to him when he passes out drunk like you gotta love
it when they put him in the in the snow and
he goes I need a what is a paintbrush ten pounds of salt and it's something
like brush a bucket and ten pounds in ten pounds of salt Lance get his pants
you know it they put him out there in the Bears licking him in the morning
waking him up and he's enjoying it first weather then he's like show show show
good girl good boy I mean girl good girl yeah like the car spinning I mean that's
I think that was that in the trailer like yeah yeah I mean that's that's just
so funny it's probably impossible to do that but it's just hilarious like what a
funny joke and I mean they just do that that stuff is all great and everything
but I really think like the best stuff is in the hot tub scene we would have to
mention the hot tub blooney when he you know gets caught in in there
caught with his hand in the cookie jar or whatever that's a way to put it in
like you know lines like he's like they're talking about the new uniforms
and he's like yeah well it doesn't exactly allow my dice to roll and buy
dice I mean testacles speaking of testicles let me get a beer you know I
mean then he's like they're talking about they're talking about probably
Anna and he he says no regrets that's my motto that and everybody Wang Chung
tonight right I also feel like he's a good friend too and you mentioned that
he gives ya some bad advice sometimes but when when what's-her-name the main
girl Anna when Anna first walks into the bar and her and Luke you know have a
conversation after the riot II realized who each other are
Luke's looking out for Rick you know he says yeah leave him alone you know yet
like he knows how much this girl's sort of like screwed him up and he doesn't
want to play the song he so he plays I like big butts by Sir mix-a-lot that's
true but I do get a sort of baby baby got
back I think is the actual name yeah yeah well I I do get it sort of a sense
that these guys are like it's believable that these guys are friends to me yeah
oh yeah yeah I mean the way they are all kind of competing over and gotta get
Inga yeah I mean he how does it go I don't forget the guys name oh gosh
what's his name I don't know the black guy he he has Ingo they're walking out
of the bar together and Lucas right behind her right behind those two with
Pigpen and they're talking about how he's gonna he's getting and he goes I'm
gonna help you out a little brother I got your back on this one I'm gonna do
her yeah big fans like wait how does that help me any like snowboards off the
roof and crashes and he's and I love you yeah yeah that is really hilarious yeah
I mean there's there's just countless lines there sitting in the coffee shop
drinking coffee he's like man this is the best vanilla latte I have ever had I
can just taste the vanilla beans there's just things like you're in the real
world and you want to say that stuff like talking about what your motto is or
like drinking coffee like talking about like it's so fun to just have coffee and
be like this is the best cup of coffee I've ever had I can just taste the you
know coffee beans like his lines are just
really fun to say and I wonder how boring your life I wonder how much was
on the script versus actually just Zack oh yeah I sing because I feel like all
of his stuff is so much better than a lot of the other guys I mean Pigpen has
some great lines too but as well as stumpy and we have some clips later on
and the show for those but I just feel like Luke it's just got to be the
combination between maybe just the script and Zach Galifianakis but just
the line delivery and just what comes out of this guy's mouth is just
absolutely cold in my opinion yeah man it's like the the outtakes were great
too and I think you're right I think there's there's some some improv I am
providing going on there yeah he says things like these uniforms are making my
nuts rageous it's really cramping my Hardy Boys yes no mystery
I remember that one that was good as sort of the they have those rolling like
the end credits right oh the bloopers outtakes yeah well love outtakes I mean
it's so much fun yeah I mean sometimes you get some of the best stuff when you
just let the actors sort of like you know improvise and spit ball some scenes
when you have these great comedic actors yeah but let's get into the soundtrack
you had some some tracks that you thought were just yeah engine day yeah
well right off the bat they hit you with like a snowboarding montage of Rick
coming down the mountain the peak or something like that oh I don't know they
just show him like just snowboarding like you could I don't know just you
basically just get the feel for like it's he's really good at snowboarding
yeah one right and it's just a cool like I feel like I was I loved watching it
now because I'm transported like they play a band like Eve 6 yeah the song
anytime I mean it just like nobody's listening to Eve 6 anymore if you do
that I'm sorry but like I I there's nothing against that that's fine but I
just don't like I feel like that sound of bands like that is so so 2001 you
know and then when they do the king of the mountain competition it's some 41
makes no difference like great song to have in their high-energy pop punk kind
of music and you know this this point in time that's what was you know really big
that's the kind of music I was listening to back then so it just like is so
nostalgic you've got Foo Fighters in there you've
got lit you've got Andrew W K Jimmy world I mean there's a lot of good stuff
in there yeah I mean when you when you think about sort of the late 90s early
2000s this is the music that sort of comes to mind like this is what every
you know skateboarding snowboarding video game was playing in the background
if you're watching like jackass this is the sort of music they would have
playing on that show yeah this is I mean even even I'm like TRL like on MTV back
in the day you had like you know lit was on there you know they had what was
their big hit that my own worst enemy yet my own worst enemy I think that was
in the late 90s but that was a really popular song some forty one was rocking
the charts back in the day too so yeah um not only was this music sort of
associated with you know like skateboarding and snowboarding and sort
of the extreme sports but it was really popular at this point in time too
yeah yeah I mean it's it kind of makes this movie a little bit of a dude movie
and I mean that's that's fine and I think the we talked about kind of the
way that we didn't really care for the the romantic side of it I think it's
because it was like a little bit forced in there in a way it wasn't really like
the primary driving force of the plot like yeah it wasn't really anything that
made the movie like move in any direction it was like the big thing was
the fact that John Major's was trying to change bull mountain and the the whole
romantic element of it didn't really do anything for you know whether or not
John Major's was gonna either stay there or get run out or you know who was gonna
win who was gonna end up with the mountain yeah I so I think that that's
probably you know one of the the bigger faults of the the storytelling in the
movie but I mean the I think the comedy makes up for it but yes I guess should
we cut to break then we get into some of the some of the outrageous clips that we
have lined up yeah I mean you said it the comedy makes up for it so when we
get back from the break we're gonna we're gonna hit it hard

abominations and get started today god what's wrong with you I don't know where
to start ever since they took my far away from me I've been doing a lot of
thinking a lot of drinking and a lot of thinking a lot of thinking about why I
act the way I do why I feel the need to have countless sexual conquests one
after the other and I think it's due to the fact that I'm I'm gay no mr. October
batting for the other team Lance everybody knows nobody cares it's okay
you know I mean if you weren't gay you'd be a pretty weird guy really
the triumphant moment for Lance
come on well I was just gonna say that I was adopted a time since we heard this
conversation
yes that's a great scene yeah you gotta give it up for Lance I mean what a great
character he's awesome definitely and for those of you who you might know the
actor who plays Lance he was actually recently in the Power Rangers movie came
out yeah a couple years ago he was the dad who's Jason's dad yeah that's right
yeah from Lance to Jason's dad and Power Rangers yeah I mean I I like um I like
him he's a good actor date what is his name uh
David Denman he's pretty good likable guy I mean I thought like it's not like
I don't know it's not gonna be a leading man but it's he's a pretty good
supporting actor definitely yeah I just think that Lance steals the show like
there's a couple characters in this you know we talked about Luke and I think
that's one where it's just kind of easy to get into Luke and and that's why we
kind of start off talking about Zach Galifianakis like it's just easy to say
like you know this is Zach Galifianakis is movie but I don't know because these
two characters we're gonna start off with Lance but there are two that are
just like outrageously funny in this movie and I think Lance is one of them
this character just kind of being able to like be this like really like I don't
know he's gay but he acts like overly straight to the point where it's so
obvious that he's gay yes to explain to someone like this is what your character
is gonna be like I feel like you can't really like talk about that without
laughing right you know in reading some of the lines that he asked to say I mean
I'll just go through I mean it was fun to take notes on this
so so Jenny comes in to the bar and they're all sitting there she goes up to
the bar to get to get a drink and one another funny character that's in there
who is with Eric played by Thomas Lennon from like Reno 911 and all the you know
that show he's at the bar and he hits on her and says you know whatever the lady
wants put it on my tab and so she orders five shots and Lance
looks at her like like her looks at the guy like he you know like oh she got you
you know like now you got to pay for all the shots for all those dudes over there
right and in and that's funny and all but then she walks away with the shots
and Lance says man if I was her I'd begin with every dude on this mountain
and then Eric just looks at him like what the hell so that's pretty funny
and then they once they start kind of talking about the fact that that months
sold the mountain and the majors is coming in they're talking about how they
don't want it to turn into Aspen right now we don't need this place we don't
want to turn into Aspen and he goes yeah but it's a sausage factory around here
what you know there's no chicks aside from the occasional whatever it's
a sausage fest and and then Lance comes in he goes I mean there are gonna be
some hotties some slammin bods with pants so tight it looks like they're
painted on middle of chicks chicks love me so it's all good and then at the end
even after he comes out they attack major and ruin majors party or whatever
the big ribbon-cutting ceremony all of that and Lance is still trying to
put on the act the facade and he sees some girls walk by and he goes hi sluts
with tits they're like you don't have to do that anymore Lance and he's like oh
yeah I love man yes I mean it's just so funny he's is hilarious and you know I
apologize if that's not funny for everybody but I mean it is it's just
really silly and hilarious I think so I love Lance in this movie oh yeah he's
great he's just one of those characters that you kind of forget about after you
haven't watched it in a while but then you go back to and it's just like oh my
god yeah I remember this guy was great in this movie yeah like when it when
Inga's riding the bull in the bar and lances up on the bar like swinging his
shirt up in the air or whatever swinging a rag or every sky like you can see him
jamming in the background like shaking it when she's riding the bull like this
hilarious and I feel like I don't know what it's probably offensive to a lot of
people but I just feel like this actor David Denman just his delivery of it
kind of makes it charming in a way you know yeah like I don't know if the actor
is gay or not it you know but I just feel like the delivery it's comedic yet
it's kind of odd at all I don't know if I don't know if it's a if it would be
offensive to like somebody who is gay or if they would just kind of get a chuckle
out of it as well yeah hopefully does it's definitely something to wonder if a
movie like this was released now would it you know how would that have been
received you know but I don't know it definitely was a different time that's
for sure definitely yeah I guess should we sort of roll into stumpy and
talking about this I've we've saved this is like does that
delicious dessert we've saved the best for last
definitely all right so here's stumpy talking in the bar this is how it all
starts I see it all before I was there I was
there yeah it was called the 80s board was President Nixon was in the White
House and FDR was running this country into the ground if I was bubbling 80s or
the wall town in what is now called Utah some fella from Colorado shows up starts
making so-called improvements right before we knew what hit us the streets
are running with la paint no you know it got so bad fella that liked to you know
smoke a little grass or drink a little Ripple crow like a rooster
maybe talented the mayor's son to a gentleman's doors uncouth against God
more like bad for real estate values stop he had to go Richard
be careful what you wish for you got a stump be careful what you wish for god
it's incredible that's I mean there's so much in there you know foreign was
President Nixon was in the White House and FDR was running this country and
there's a girl that makes no sense three presidents who wasn't during the
eighth but he's just so funny before we knew it the streets were running with
lot to challenge the mayor's son to a gentleman's what does it mean to crow
like a rooster is there a deeper meaning to that I
don't know maybe curl like Peter Pan like Robin love yeah right but uh yeah I
mean that I love that we have that clip because that is kind of the longest you
know I hope they have the feel like flute music the battle like he's going
into battle it's a yeah Revolutionary War scene or something like that I loved
it but but yeah he's got so many good lines in the movie you know like hey
Pigpen you ever been in one of those lesbian chat rooms are they good oh I
don't know when you really know that he probably went to it yeah and he's like
did I ever tell you how I invented snowboarding I don't want credit for it
but they keep giving it to me or when Barry shows up which is a you know kind
of a funny moment in itself oh yeah yes because they're all gonna go over there
and kick his ass right you know and then they rolls out there you realize he's
paralyzed but uh he hands Luke some pills and he's like well first I think
he asked who's the jacuzzi Casanova and you know Luke's embarrassed already but
then Stumpy's up like fixing something up on the balcony and he's like oh
that's him right there yeah they call him that because he was way up in it you
know loving it strong man it's it's just so good
Dave Koechner to like and that's another guy like you know people who are big
anchorman fence you know champ kind if they're if they're into anchorman years
prior we were enjoying stump e'en out cold yes
I mean it's just it's just so good all in the hot tub scene it's great
I have I actually just pulled the clip up I I want to play it because I feel
like he says some crazy shit in it yeah alright so I just pulled this up you
know have nice words for he'll move stuck in a hot tub
yeah rubbing alcohol in the contraction
compression alright so let's talk about let's talk about what he brings in for
supplies to get this job done alright so correct me if I'm wrong but
does he have like a bucket yeah pair of a big pair of like garden snippers yeah
yeah like huge shears like and a lime and a bottle of rubbing alcohol right so
initially you're seeing like okay rubbing alcohol like he's gonna use that
to maybe like clean is wound or melt the snow or like something chemically is
going to make it so he can you know so he can get that thing out of there but
oh no he he puts the snippers like right in Luke's face and just snaps then like
shows him while he's talking about the Eskimos or whatever and he cuts his
I'm with these huge shears and takes the rubbing alcohol takes a drink and goes
and then takes the line afterwards as like the chaser right and then just ends
up using snow to get him out of the hot tub and the other thing that's really
funny about it is the way he looks down at Luke's situation after he pushes him
out cuz he looks at him like from three different angles and he's like squinting
like and then finally leans in and goes was it worth it yeah and it's just a you
know it's a hilarious question because you really feel like you know like
stumpy like is seriously asking him if it was worth it even though he was
outside all night frozen naked and a hot tub with his dick stuck in a jet and the
mountain looks at it asking if it's worth it like oh that is just like the
last thing you'd expect him to say but it is a riot yeah well I don't know it's
just like it's Adam bigs like he's the guy whose will will always be known for
Jason Bay Jason Biggs yeah will always be known for sticking his wiener and
apple pie yeah but but Zach Galifianakis will never be known as the guy who stuck
his wiener in a hottub jet right right yep no not not not enough people saw out
cold right and I mean with with these viewings like the great thing about how
cold is that the more you watch it the more you you find the more it's it's the
gift that keeps on get so many of detail you know we've done a lot of movies on
the podcast that you know they you you watch them more than once and you will
be rewarded right for example you may have noticed
that there is a scene in which Jenny is in kind of the the locker room or the
area where you get all your equipment on for the snowboard lessons that she
teaches I think her and Rick must both be instructors and Jenny is putting a
kid's boots on tying his boots up and an older kid asks like hey can you lace my
boots up to Jenny I like the way you do it whatever you know that not talking
about that kid but the original kid oh yeah he's a little portly in blond hair
curly yeah you know who I'm talking about oh yeah it's the kid from Bad
Santa Thurman Merman yeah from Bad Santa yeah
yeah just nice I just got done doing his advent calendar probably hanging out
with a freakin drunk Billy Bob Thornton
yeah I was I was digging that I was like holy crap was that Thurman Merman right
yeah I totally forgot that he was in this and then I we didn't really spend
much time talking about Eric no we doesn't have a lot to do but he is
in a pretty funny scene one of my favorite scenes and we touched on stumpy
a skinned pig pen like you know hey Pigpen you ever been to one of those
lesbian chat rooms and that that sets the sets the stage it's a little
foreshadowing that Pigpen is gonna get a little a little curious yes yeah this
scene is it's it's one of my favorites in the entire movie so it shows Pigpen
logging on to what is it like girls night or something like that that's
something like yeah and he enters his name and let's
see he types his name as Sally yep and he starts talking to a woman which I
don't remember the the Chet user's name specifically so like Tina or something
like that something like that yeah and uh you know you come to realize that
it's Eric on the other hand the other hand got this like really chilled out
like music too like this like R&B Female Vocalist music on the over the scene and
yet you have picked back and Eric who are both dudes who have logged on to
this lesbian chat room and they're just talking to another dude yeah he says
something like tell me I mean what you look like
and pigpen rights five-foot-three a hundred and ten pounds with huge debt
and then it like that so yeah and then they get away yeah but there he says
something like tell me something I don't know tell in pigpens responses I set my
brother on fire once Brian Eric types in I think you're
setting me on fire awesome and yeah and then pigpens next like five responses
are just awesome and you can hear that like the keys like banging with these
like prompt noises that are happening and finally Eric kind of like collapses
hands like in like success and they cut to a wide shot of him sitting in the
chair bare assed and you realized that he was you know handling his business
right and the thought that these two idiots are jerking it to each other in
chat room because stumpy told Pigpen about it earlier right you know it just
is it's just something that's so like ridiculously stupid that it's it's
somewhat like hilarious well there's also the the sort of angle that every
time Eric tries to make an insult towards somebody it's sort of like it's
sort of like he somehow makes it gay like my fist is gonna make an
appointment with your man yes yeah well yeah and Luke Luke calls him out on it
like you know that would technically that was flirting right you know why is
it that every time you say something it it involves my ass or something to do
with my ass right yeah I love it that's just kind of like one of the
characters that he doesn't really have much going on like it doesn't serve much
purpose but he's really funny and all the stuff with the the drug test like
and there's a lot of back-and-forth with Eric and Pigpen you know here or Eric
and these guys in general like Eric's kind of the guy that's just kind of
trying to be majors right hand for getting these guys out of there but like
the the reaction he has when Pigpen sets down a plastic cup with a turd in it and
he just loses it and yells big bad you know it's it's pretty funny yeah yeah
definitely the the characters are the strong aspects about this movie I guess
we can sort of start you know talking about what we liked about the movie
versus like sort of the the flaws you know easily the the standout parts about
this film are you know the comedy the characters Zach Galifianakis by far or
the character of stumpy I will say I mean there's a lot of a lot
of these great comedic characters but the leading man played by Jason London I
just wasn't really interested in this guy upon rewatching it yeah it's hard to
be there's just so much going on around him yeah medically but he could have
been interchangeable with almost you know any actor that's like halfway
decent decently good looking for that then male role like yeah I don't and and
he's not somebody that I noticed in anything else he's in Dazed and Confused
he's like the he is that's right he's the lead guy yeah that's true the
quarterback good call good call yeah but yeah I don't know I mean I don't dislike
a minute I just don't think that he there's parts where he tries or is
supposed to be funny and I don't think he's that successful like he has some
sarcastic remarks that he makes as well and you know you could just tell that
it's not his bread and butter you know yeah well and just that the whole love
story I'm not interested in this character I'm not gonna be interested in
this love story and yeah the girl that he's you know
he's he's sort of uh I don't know he's fallen head over heels over and he's you
know he's kind of got that puppy dog love that he can't get over he should
actually be with jenni the girl who's actually interested in him and who's
cool and yeah you know yeah and he keeps screwing it up and blown her by you know
just kind of let her blowing her off you know
while they have a dinner date you know what I mean right yeah I mean I think
that that was a missed opportunity with jenni like I feel like they had
enough in there that there should have been an angle of those two getting
together like somewhere in there as the as the conflict of them versus majors
and resolving them taking back over the mountain all we got with the you know
between Rick and Jenny was stumpy talking about them they got oh yeah they
got together and then some you know that's all we got at the end to kind of
show what happened with them so yeah it just kind of was like something that it
didn't really have an a real arc it was just hollow you know yeah this sort of
never resolves into anything yeah right and it could have been better
if it did I mean it would have gave it a little more purpose this whole this
whole like getting over the other girl and heard letting her do the right thing
by staying with Barry and I mean it's all of that all of that scream time
spent on it for something that doesn't even come to fruition and resolve in a
way that that makes it have purpose so I don't know it's just kind of that that
part of it is one of the weak points of the movie right I think the first
two-thirds of this movie is great yes I feel that last sort of 25 minutes are
not so great and that that's sort of what what the movie is leading towards
is trying to stop this ceremony or whatever the hell it is you know like
right why why is stopping this ceremony gonna stop John Major's from from you
know buying it I don't know that doesn't really make a whole lot of sense to me
but I don't know I just feel like that first two-thirds it's kind of tight
comedy the characters are interesting you know why right I'm sort of go about
their daily lives and you know run amok in on bull mountain and then I don't
know I just feel like the moment when Anna's boyfriend Barry gets to talk and
what he doesn't have anything to do you know he flies an airplane and then flies
back off right you don't take sin and with them yep so
I just feel like those two characters could have been removed from the screen
and then you could have had Rick and Jenny focused and actually have
something to do have an arc yeah right and I feel like that would have made it
a better movie and maybe you know figure out a different way for these characters
to actually stop this ski resort from happening other than interrupting a
ceremony so that's kind of my gripes about the movie other than that I don't
really have any problems with it I kind of thought that maybe Pigpen was a
little bit too out there like just a little too the the actor I think over
acted that role slightly you know too much it's a little too cartoony yeah
he's very cartoony like I mean but I don't know at the same time if he pulled
it back a little bit like reeled it in a little bit it might not have been as
funny so I don't know I'm kind of I'm kind of torn on that one cuz there were
parts of it like I feel like when I was younger I thought Pigpen was a lot
funnier and now that I'm older I find him less funny like ever I'm just kind
of like a little bit more annoying and I feel like that's how the characters feel
about him too right they're always like just thinking he's a pain in the ass and
treating him like shit and you know yelling at him while he's humping the
the bench while they're stuck in the in the gondola
I do always dreaming about his James Bond dream yeah is a great dream I do
love the part where Rick and Jenny are like about to walk off after the king of
the mountain race yeah Pigpen and Luke start humping each other yeah and then
it's like time to stop but piggy and keeps humping Luke I found my dad any he
like was Edie pushes him down right something like that does he do and then
does he fall down after that yeah Luke falls down and then he starts punching
Pigpen yeah so it's quite quite a hilarious moment in the movie right yeah
oh man let's watch it again yeah round tool do you have any other sort of uh I
guess flaws about the movie um Lee Majors is pretty bad in this movie yeah
I would have to agree he's he's probably like one of the worst villains of all
time he said he's good I mean he's great at
being a douchebag and and kind of being that like businessman you know that he's
supposed to be with this this unlikable business owner dude but some of the
scenes are just kind of bad like the the shot where Rick takes the hat that Jon
gave them and I'm gonna get to that takes the hat and says hey Jon I quit
and he throws the hat and then John says like that's a $300 hat bitch you know
it's just I don't know it just it feels it doesn't feel natural for Lee Majors
and then I actually kind of liked the scene it was really funny where he gives
him the hat in the box and some gift and he says right welcome to
the winning team well I'll see you out there or something
like that and he reads the card and it says the exact same thing like I thought
that was really funny yeah that is a nice touch
but he's always saying stuff like that like you know a short stack but you know
and he calls the guy a retard all the time like that's I don't know another
sign of the times like you can't probably couldn't do that either this
this day and age now but um yeah I thought that um you know it's a little
lackluster I guess yeah the the comedy keeps this thing together and it keeps
it being rewatchable and as well as the characters you know you know this some
of them aren't the greatest Rick isn't the greatest character or Anna or uh I
mean Jenny doesn't really have much to do I think it would have been a lot more
interesting if her and Rick had something more in the film but it is
what it is and that's kind of what a this shows about we're sort of
reflecting on what what's out in front of us with this movie so I I had a blast
through watching this movie I yes I forgot it how much some some of some
great comedic bits are in this flick yeah and I mean we didn't even touch on
all of it no so there's plenty reason to you know if you're just listening to the
podcast and haven't seen this in a little while like go back and watch it I
mean I think you know it's it's fun to just sit there and and not have to
really focus on you know so much on plot and what's going on and stuff like that
like this movie is just kind of like a you know shit a shallow easy watch you
know you can watch it while you're making dinner or or whatever doing
something else you could still laugh your ass off and get all the jokes
and I mean we're listening to audio clips and it's still funny we're right
you know listening to the clip of stumpy getting getting Luke's member out of the
jet and we can't even I couldn't even see it and I still was laughing so right
you know it just goes to show that it's it truly is a funny movie definitely so
I think we can start wrapping it up there next week we're gonna be reviewing
Total Recall from 1990 another Paul Verhoeven flick we've recently covered
Starship Troopers which was a good time it's been a little bit since I watched
Total Recall maybe about a year or two yeah
so I'm excited too he's got some pretty pretty extreme directing techniques I
hear hey yeah yeah pulling his pants down too but the cast at ease what's the
big deal yeah you seen you seen one you seen him out he probably saw Arnold's
probably or Sharon Stone's was made out of tight it was made out of terminator
alloy liquid cyber did his member was made by Cyberdyne systems liquid metal
over metal endoskeleton but I think we can wrap things up there so be on the
lookout for the Total Recall up so next week for anime and myself seize the carp
