Hello and welcome to this video.
Today I'm going to make a review of the varnish assortment nr. 1 from Hammerl.
As you see I already have a violin, a white one that has never been varnished, I didn't
make it on my own, I bought it like this and I also have a small piece of wood, you might
recognize this piece because it is a left over of the violin that I'm making, of the ribs.
I'm going to use this piece as a control piece because I want to put the violin in
the drying chamber, but Mr. Hammerl let me know that for this varnish you don't need
a drying chamber so I want to see what's the deference between using the drying chamber
and not using it.
And I have a small piece of woot that I'm going to use to keep the violin you can put
it in here and then I can keep the instrument like that or I can fix it here if it needs
to dry. In the box you also find instructions on how to use everything and I was reading
about that yesterday and I had to sandpaper the instrument and I did that with 400 so
it's ready to be used, and there is a bag with gelatine powder and that has to stay
overnight in water and I did that yesterday evening, now I have to heat it up a little
bit and I can use it.
So that is the first step: Put the gelatine the instrument.
The gelatine is ready, I had to warm it up a little bit, it's warm enough I think,
and I have also a brush which is not the brush which is contained n the box, you have to
buy an extra one but a very simple one, I bought this for a couple of euro.
I have also put a protective piece of wood on the surface for the fingerboard, so it
doesn't get dirty and I don't ruin the corners.
I will start with my control piece of wood and then I will do the violin.
OK the first step is ready I will put my violin here, so it can dry.
By the way I used a tiny bit of the gelatine, there is still more than enough left so you
don't have to worry that it's not enough but you also don't want to make a layer
of it over the instrument so don't be too greedy!
I think in this video we are going to see the clock a lot, because there is a lot of
waiting while you are varnishing!
The gelatine is dry so now I have to sandpaper a little bit the instrument, gently they write
in the instructions, that's why I'm going to use the used pieces of sandpaper that I
have from the previous sanding.
I'm going to do both my test piece and the instrument.
Don't forget to clean up the instrument after sanding, otherwise all the dust is going
into your varnish.
Now I'm going to use the water stain and apply it with the sponge and this will make
the instrument a bit browner, a bit old brown, like wood that has been a very long period
of time in the sun.
The violin and the test part are ready, now the violin is going into the drying chamber.
I will put the test piece next to the window
in the living room today it will be a very sunny day, -7C but sunny!
I used les than half the bottle of the water stain so maybe there is enough for two or
even three violins because here I still have some but as you see it became a bit dirty
from the dust from the instrument so I'm not going to put this back in the bottle,
I'm going to dispose it.
Take care of the environment don't throw your disposals just away, put them in containers
and try to recycle them.
The violin has been in the chamber for 3,5 hours almost and it definitely became a bit
darker, and in my opinion dark enough, and you can see also a lot of difference between
the violin that was in the chamber and the piece of wood that I left in front of the
window, sunny day today but it's January so the sun is very low.
And this is the difference, you see that this is clearly lighter than the rest of the instrument.
You can also see the difference in this picture between the part that was stained and the
part that wasn't.
In the instructions they say that you have to apply immediately now the first layer of
primer and I think that this is because of the primer will stop this process of getting
darker and darker and that's what we want.
I will do that on the violin and put it back in the chamber and I will put the piece again
in front of the window, we will have today another 4 hours of light and maybe I will
varnish this one tomorrow.
The first layer of primer is on the instrument now it's time to go in the chamber again.
The instrument is dry after the first layer of primer, it needed about 4 hours in the
chamber and the piece of wood is also dry that went also quick enough, I think that
the most difference in the drying time between in or out of the chamber will be later as
the layers of varnish will become a bit thicker, at the beginning part of the varnish goes
also into the wood so it dries pretty quickly.
Now I have to sand it again very light and then put the second layer of primer.
Some people ask in the comment of the video where I showed how I made my chamber how the
instrument is hanging in the chamber and they suggested that you could put the motor on
the bottom and the use something like that to fix the instrument, that's also a possibility,
but I do it the other way round I hang the instrument as you see, let me take the camera
a bit closer, this is the part where the instrument hangs and I use this pin which is a sound
post for a small violin to fix it.
This passes through the peg holes.
This is how the instrument is hanging in the chamber and I will show you, now it's also
rotating and that's the idea.
The violin is dry again, I have to say that between the violin and the piece of wood,
the violin dried in the chamber in almost 3 hours, a little bit less, but the piece
of wood needed more time, eventually I don't know precisely because I left it overnight
but the following morning it was nice and dry.
Still one night is not so much for oil varnish, it's pretty good.
The following step is to sand the instrument but not with sandpaper anymore, but with this
stuff which is in this bag, it's called rottenstone I think or rottenstone, I don't
know so good but you understand what I mean!
The violin is ready now I'm finishing the piece of wood, and as I have to use water
to clean it a bit up I will leave it for one hour to dry perfectly, it's not good to
mix oil varnish with water as you understand water and oil don't mix very well.
I will leave it to dry and I will start with the coloured varnish.
Everything is dry so I can start varnishing, and now I'm going to use the coloured varnish
and I choose for the red-brown but as you understand you can choose whatever colour
you want and I'm not going to colour this varnish although I have colours from the same
producer, from Hammerl, but I want to use it just as it is as this is also the idea
of this assortment.
I have applied several layers of the coloured varnish I think about 7 or 8 and as you see
the instrument is dark darker than it was at the beginning it looks a bit lighter on
camera.
I will stop now with the coloured varnish and I will put 2 or 3 layers of the coating
which is a transparent varnish but before you might see that this side is darker than
this side but that is not caused by the varnish this is a defect of the wood of the back of
the instrument, if I turn the instrument, if I flip it up side down, now you see that
both sides are the same colour and now you see that this side is darker but this side
is this side which is the lighter one so you see that there is a strange effect that is
caused from the wood, the wood is not the best quality it is a bit cheap instrument
that I bought as I said at the beginning of the video and it makes this effect, we might
talk about it in another video.
For the rime being it's good to know that the varnish doesn't make any difference
on the left or right part as you seen now the colour is the same.
I will sand the instrument lightly and I will put the first layer of coating.
I've put 2 layers of the transparent coating and now according to the instructions the
instrument has to wait 2 to 4 weeks so that the varnish gets perfectly dry.
After that I will put the fingerboard on its place, put the fittings, and use the grip
polish on the grip and I will put a couple of pictures on Facebook, follow me on Facebook,
the link is in the description.
In conclusion I have to say that I'm very satisfied about this product it is complete
as I would like to expect everything was in it except one brush that you can find in every
do-it-yourself shop, the varnish is of a very high quality very very transparent, I like
how well I see the wood after almost 10 layers of varnish it is very easy to apply this is
a very good brush also and I think that also people that have no experience with varnishing
or painting won't have any problem to varnish their first instrument.
That's it for today's video, I would like to thank again Mr. Hammerl for sending me
these products to try out, thank you for watching like the video if you liked it don't forget
to subscribe and I will see you next time again!
Bye bye!
