TV Evropa - Business Daily - Alexander Yonchev - Simple.Architecture (14.09.2018) - Duration: 15:41.

Hello, and welcome to Business Daily, the economics show on TV Evropa

Hello to those who listen to us on the radio Evropa, 105.6 in Sofia.

We start with our first guest

Alexander Yonchev, architect and founder of Simple.Architecture

Hello and welcome.

Hello, and thank you for this invitation.

Thank you for coming.

We always start with a brief introduction of our guest.

What is Simple. and what are your main activities?

Studio Simple.Architecture is a creative studio where we elaborate projects in the fields of architecture

and interior design.

Our main activities are projects of small and medium scale.

We mainly work in the private field.

We participate in international competitions.

We also work abroad, mainly in France.

You have experience from abroad?

Yes, I have graduated the École Nationale Supérieure d'Architecture de Saint-Étienne in France.

Afterwards I had the opportunity to work a little bit in France,

and then in Italy for a while.

When I came back to Bulgaria I worked for an year and a half

in a bulgarian studio.

Given the potential of France and Italy,

why did you start an activity in Bulgaria as well?

In Bulgaria there is the need of quality architecture.

When there is already good architecture, like in the case of France and Italy,

it has to be preserved.

In this sense those countries are governed by politics of protection

of their heritage, while in Bulgaria we need to improve the quality of construction.

I have a feeling that here, we are quite far from the level of our neighbours in western Europe.

What do you mean by quality construction?

I mean a quality of architecture, not only a quality of the building process.

I also mean quality of environment, and quality of life.

We witness more and more how sometimes bad decisions

have a huge impact on the quality of environment and on the everyday life in many districts in Sofia.

This is a social phenomena.

Thus we could say that architecture is connected directlt to

qualities of life and environment.

With this in mind I believe that there are lots of improvements to make in Bulgaria

and this was one of the main reasons to open a studio here as well.

I believe that the way we consider architecture here is quite different from how it is considered in Europe.

I believe that this explains why the situation is as it is.

I have also some ideas about what could we do in order to change this. I talk about long-term processes.

I know that there is something new that you are currently preparing,

in relation to your ideas of improvement.

We know that next week you organise an event

in collaboration with the Institut français de Bulgarie.

Can you present it and tell us more about it, because this kind of events

is rather rare, from what I know.

Yes. Well, it is an event organised by the Institut français de Bulgarie

and where we take part in order to offer an architectural atelier.

There we will debate on architectural matters,

but also on questions related to interior design and urbanism.

We will also try to connect those three fields

which at first sight seem quite different,

and which we often tend to dissociate here in Bulgaria,

but which after all are strongly connected in western Europe.

We will discuss themes related to architecture in general.

There will be discussions, and exercises,

and we will try to compare bulgarian and french working methods.

We will look for common things and for differences in both methods

and we will develop a critical thinking in order to find together

our proper vision of the architectural practice.

This subject is so vast

that it concerns not only architects

but also people that are interested in architecture and environment.

So we could say that this atelier is open to all those that are interested in these matters.

The sessions will be held in the Institut français de Bulgarie's main building.

The first one would be the day after St.Sofia Day?

Yes, we will have a presentation on tuesday, September 18th

from 18.00h. This first meeting would be free of charge

and will last for about two hours.

We would present there the main subjects that we will treat.

How long will the whole atelier last?

The first session will last for 9 weeks, once a week.

So this is a long-term atelier?

Exactly.

Given the potential of this atelier, we could even make it a bit longer,

or repeat it once this first session is done.

But for now we are focused on this first session.

Each week will have its own subject.

Together, all subjects will be connected with each other,

but they could also be visited separately.

How is Bulgaria different from the rest of the countries in western Europe?

Of course given the fact that they have market economy for much longer.

Certain processes which are relatively new for us

have already started there for a long time.

But besides this, what is the main difference?

I believe that the main difference

is the lack of spatial awareness in the society.

I mean that we are not like those countries, like you've said,

that have this long history not only in the field of economics, but in culture as well.

Those are countries that have architectural culture

for centuries.

Here, this culture and this conscience

are not quite defined yet.

That's why we witness

so many eclectical projects.

We see stong contrast in peoples' opinions,

some of them even reaching weird levels of radicalism

in their comprehension of architecture and of urbanism.

And this is to me the main difference

that we should try to eliminate,

in order to find a more harmonious

way of thinking.

Thus, we could get from a process of confrontation

towards a process of creation of something new and sustainable.

Is this a natural process,

or should there be some kind of catalyst

to show us the direction?

On one hand, I believe that there is a natural process of change

because things evolve from one generation to another.

On the other hand, I believe that we, architects,

have to open up towards the society

give a hand and start a dialogue

in which we could explain ourselves and be available to society.

I am affraid that currently there is some kind of a barrier between architects and society.

Often we find ourselves in confrontation, although we sould serve society.

And in order to start this process of change

we should somehow create

a dialogue, be present, and try to explain

the importance of our profession.

Thus people will start to ask for a better quality of life.

We have mentioned France, Italy, and other european countries.

It's obvious that they are many years ahead, even centuries,

when it comes to history and culture.

But is there any other country to which we could compare,

and which has already passed through this change of thinking,

and which we coud use as an example or as an inspiration?

Maybe another east european country

that has similar to our history?

Yes, that's very interesting.

I have returned not long ago

from the Biennale di architettura di Venezia.

This year the theme was the "Freespace".

In this Biennale take part countries from all over the world.

What has really impressed me was that Bulgaria was the only country from Eastern Europe

hat was not present there.

What I mean is that there are many countries in Eastern Europe

that have followed the same path as us, and that are already in this process of development

of a new thinking.

I see how those countries are opening to Europe and to the rest of the world.

They are upgrading according to the rest of the world.

And they work with an international spirit.

Today everything is connected, and we have difficulties

to speak about styles in contemporary architecture

especially on a large scale like Europe.

There is a natural process of unification

which is due to the permanent exchange of information.

So I see a lot of these countries passing through this process,

and that's why I would love to see Bulgaria join them,

and start to offer a more adequate architecture.

Does this depend on architects?

On one side it depends on architects.

We have to look around us and get interested in what our colleagues abroad do.

And I'm not talking about looking at any architects, but only the best ones.

We must know that there are bad architects as well.

So we have to constantly bring our critical look when it comes to choosing who to follow.

We have to study their methods,

and try to find out how can we interprate them here, according to our context.

We have to start changing our way of working architecture.

At the same time, this also depends on society

because it has to ask for this change.

We have to show it the various aspects of this change,

and it has to realize the need of this change.

It is only then that society will demand a better quality of projects

and architects will start helping each other in order to meet their clients' needs.

I propose we go back to the subject of Simple.Architecture.

Do you concentrate on projects in Bulgaria

or do you also work abroad?

We also work abroad, mainly in France,

because it's for a long time that I have contacts there.

But since this year

we have started with the Simple. studio.

So for now we are looking for projects in Bulgaria,

being new to this market.

And we try to offer a different regard on architecture, like the one I tried to describe previously.

What type of projects have you done, or are you currently working on?

We mainly work on individual houses,

we also do some interiors

of apartments, of restaurants, of offices.

We don't have a specific preferred type of project.

We also work on competition etries,

mostly international competitions.

We take part in competitions for new monuments, housing projects,

and public buildings.

So I could say that we are not specialized in only one type of building.

And by the way, if you study the greatest architects

you will find out that there isn't an architect that works on one type of projects only.

The architect must be able to meet peoples' needs,

in a specific moment and for a specific context.

And we try to intervene wherever our work is needed.

If we go beyond the architecture, the interior design and the urbanism,

and we continue to talk about Bulgaria,

do you think that it's rather easy or difficult to do business here?

What are the challenges, what are the assets?

I believe that the main obstacle is the misunderstanding of our job in general.

And this is not just about architecture.

I think this is the big challenge.

The lack of communication, and transparency in the activity of professionals.

This prevents people's awareness for the need of professionals,

and consequently the dialogue can not be done.

We are quite quickly in a moment of confrontation:

"I have to go through that person, and that's the only reason I'm going there."

So I do not go by choice, but it's just that somewhere it's written that I have to do it.

And when people will change that attitude,

and that they will start to take an interest in each other's profession,

and that they will be aware that the person in front of them has invested time

to study something and to be useful to society.

At that time, this respect will help us to progress and change the current situation.

Let's recall again the event of September 18th.

Yes, it's next Tuesday. From 18.30h in the "Slaveikov" room at the French Institute of Bulgaria.

The workshop will last nine weeks?

Yes, it will last at least nine weeks.

We hope to have generated enough interest to continue more than that.

You will build links between France and Bulgaria. And between Europe in general and Bulgaria.

Okay. Thank you very much. Alexander Yonchev, our guest.

We will take a break and we will continue with our next guest.
