With awards season upon us, it's difficult not to contemplate how the political landscape
of today might affect the Oscars race. A powerful example of how politics can affect a
film's success is the right-wing outrage that stemmed from the revelation that Universal's
'First Man' had omitted a real-life scene - that of Neil Armstrong planting the American
flag on the moon. First Man subsequently made just $44 million at the domestic
box office. Writes THR's Stephen Galloway,
According to Galloway, any major studio release must grapple with the conundrum
of wanting to draw in audiences, thereby going easy on the political overtones,
but wanting to win an Oscar, thereby needing to draw on the issues of the day.
And if you think that politics have no bearing on the Oscar's race, Galloway says
think again, citing examples where liberal contenders beat out more conservative ones.
This year, several liberally skewed films will need tread a tricky line if they wish to be
in the running for a statuette - namely they will need to run one campaign appealing
to moviegoers and one for 9,000 Academy members. Netflix's 'Roma' is a prime
example. Says Galloway,
Likewise for Universal's 'Green Book' - about a white chauffeur and a black musician
touring the segregationist South. Such fare would once have been an Oscar no-brainer,
but Galloway proffers that linking the film to the current rise in racist violence and rhetoric
might turn off theatergoers. And two recent releases will have to navigate a
particularly treacherous course says Galloway.
