If you're looking for the best headphones for traveling that has supreme comfort,
impressive sound quality and smart noise cancellation,
stay tuned to hear our review on the Sony
Wh-1000xm3. The predecessors to these headphones are Sony 1000xm2. A
lot of people complained about the headband cracking and having a bulky
appearance on their ears, including myself. Just to give you a general summary of what
these headphones do, they're made for people who travel or commute to places and they
have a list of smart features, for making the journey more enjoyable.
For the price tag of $348,
these headphones will need a proper review
if you're thinking about purchasing these headphones. In this video
you'll find out everything from how these headphones work and how you can benefit
from the features
they offer besides just good sound quality.
Hey guys Dom here from BeatPerformance.com with yet another review of the famous
Sony
Wh-1000xm3. Now
this will be a long video,
but for a good reason. You'll be getting a detailed, yet honest review that includes
everything
you need to know before getting these.
Everything is time stamped down in the description box below for you to skip to
any section but I encourage you to watch the entire video because I don't want you to miss
out on any important information.
Let's begin unboxing them.
There's four things inside, you get a carrying case a USB type-c cable, a 3.5mm
cable and a plug adapter.
The carrying case is a hard shell which makes it good for protection while
traveling plus it's free. Some of the headphones out there expected to pay for
good case and instead you just get a pouch like Skullcandy does for example. USB
type-c charges are better than your standard charges.
They're reversible which means they'll plug in either way, which makes it
smoother to connect.
To charge them you can either plug it into a computer or head adapter and plug them
normally. If you're traveling for a few days and you want to maximize your battery
life,
I recommend getting a portable adapter so you can charge it on the go.
I'll link that down below. The connection cable is long enough for you to connect to
your phone or your laptop.
The only problem I have here is the L-shaped plug-in. Sony,
why would you do this?
Anyway... The plug adapter is still good. You're able to listen to in-flight
entertainment and watch movies by plugging the cable into
the adapter and then plugging it into an airline Jack.
Now, let's touch on the build quality and the style of these headphones. We'll
also rate the overall comfort and discuss any weak points.
You can get them in either black or silver. Black is more subtle, but silver looks
nicer with clothes. The primary use of these headphones is for traveling and
commuting to place.
So for this reason they're made to be light on your head, comfortable for long periods
of time and long-lasting. The enclosure of this model is over-ear, which means they
completely surround your ears. Over ear fits are best for noise cancellation due to the
ears completely being surrounded and they're more comfortable.
They also produce the least amount of sound leakage. The headphones look really
high-end as well.
I've tried them on with various types of clothing and they look good with anything
that I wear.
For portability, they swivel,
so this allows you to store them away into a case or you can even let them hang
around your neck.
They're one of the lightest head phones on the market. Weight is important because if
you're wearing them while travelling, you want light headphones for extra comfort. A
huge downside to the overall build is the use of plastic which is kind of shocking
considering the price tag. The previous model had leather material, so it's
surprising why they resorted to plastic.
However, this design does make them more lightweight and plenty high-end
headphones have this similar build.
The pads are foamed and evenly distributes pressure.
When you first put them on they feel so soft, it's unreal.
The only issue I have with the pads is the depth.
I mean, even though there's a lot of room, it isn't that deep.
So your ears would be quite close to the driver, which may be a con for some people.
Also when you wear them for a couple of hours at a time, they heat up your
ears a bit causing some sweat, but it's not a huge problem.
This is the common issue with most over-ear headphones,
they will heat up your ears. On the left ear cup,
you have a 3.5mm port. Next to it
you have a power button and a Noise Cancellation / Ambient sound button. On
the right side,
you have a USB port and a light next to it to show you when it's charging.
You may have noticed they're aren't any control buttons, but the controls
are actually on touch pad and they have different functions.
I'll show you more on how to use this later on. The previous model had issues
with the headband. They would have a cracking noise, which was annoying for some people.
The newer model though has some improvements to prevent the headband from cracking such
as, reducing the gap between the headband and the driver and other things as well.
The headband is made from premium leather, filled with cushion and it sits gently
on your head without any discomfort.
There are also indicators inside to show you how to put them on and you can adjust
the headband according to your head shape.
The clamping force is subtle and feels comfortable when pushed up against your
ears.
I've done a flexibility test on these to test out any weak points and there wasn't
any cracking or popping,
so it's all good.
I also always recommend getting a warranty when purchasing headphones in this price
range because you can get a new pair if they break down within a couple of years.
The overall comfort easily gets a 9.5/10.
They feel lightweight, extremely comfortable but they do heat up your ears
after a while so keep that in mind.
It's not major drawback, but I'm just putting out there.
Now
let's touch on features and benefits of 1000xm3 to give the
expensive price tag some real justice.
I'm going to explain what each of the features are and how they can benefit you
compared to your standard headphones when traveling. The first feature will be
wireless connectivity.
The 2 most common connectivity types in headphones are wired and wireless.
1000xm3 has the capability of doing both so you can use wires or Bluetooth.
The benefits of Bluetooth is that you have total freedom from wires and you can
connect to different devices for example computers and gaming consoles, such as PS4.
The Bluetooth version is 4.2 and the range is up to 30ft.
The connection is strong enough for you to walk around the house without having your
device right next to you.
You also have NFC which makes the Bluetooth pairing process a lot easier.
You can touch your phone to the ear cup and it can pair instantly. The only issue
with this though,
is that your phone or device also needs NFC. You can find out which phones have NFC
down below. Sony uses their own Bluetooth codec called LDAC. This transmits
nearly 3 times more data than other codecs.
This means that the sound quality will be high resolution audio.
However, I must mention if you don't have an Android phone you will not be able to
select this feature because Android have settings that enable you to preset this. On
iPhone you're not be able to do this.
I have an iPhone myself and the sound quality is still good, but it will be optimal
with an Android phone.
Sony also uses something called DSEE HX, which is software that up scales your
existing sound source to a higher resolution file.
This means that if you're downloading movies or music online and they have a poor
quality file, 1000xm3 will automatically make it high quality.
This is very useful for entertainment as you can watch anything and the sound will
automatically be better.
Latency is the main cause for concern in Bluetooth's headphones. This describes how
bits of data sync. For example watching movies, the audio has to sync with the
video. Lower latency means the audio and video will be in sync and higher latency
will cause the sound to play first followed by video delay. On Sony
Wh-1000xm3.
The latency is really low while watching movies or listening to music.
I haven't experienced any issues with the audio syncing.
This means you enjoy watching movies without any audio delay and the high
resolution audio will give you a great experience.
The battery life is 30 hours with noise cancellation on and 38 hours with no
cancellation off. This is extremely long and they beat a lot of other competitors on the
market.
This should last you for the whole day including long flights and commuting
long distance.
Now,
keep in mind this battery life is if you were playing music continuously. If you
were to play music on and off, the average battery life will be max 30 hours with
noise cancellation on and 200 hours with the noise cancellation off which is insane. A
full charge takes 3 hours and you have a quick charge feature as well.
If you're ever in a hurry to charge you can charge it for just 10 minutes and you
can get 5 hours of playback time, which is incredibly useful. The 1000xm3
comes with an app called Sony Connect.
You can use this app for different noise cancellation features when you're
traveling. For example, you can use Adaptive Sound Control to adjust ambient
sound depending on your activity.
If you're traveling and you want to maximize noise cancellation, you can cancel
out all the background noise.
Noise cancellation is also optimized for flight use. They have a unique Atmospheric
Pressure Optimizing feature which delivers optimal sound at a high altitude.
So you can enjoy the noise cancellation at its best when you fly. The HD Noise
Cancellation Processor called QN1 ensures that noise cancellation power is
greatly enhanced and the music is never compromised.
So this produces maximum sound quality, even when the ANC is on.
You can also use the Personal Optimize feature on the app.
This takes into account characteristics such as head size, glasses and hair then
optimizes the noise cancellation for you.
Also,
if you're ever on board or commuting by train, you can use something called Quick
Attention Mode. This process involves placing your hand on the right ear cup and
gently pushing. When you do this your music or audio will stop playing and the
sound in your environment will amplify.
This comes in handy when you don't want to take your headphones off, but you want to
quickly hear someone talking.
I would give the overall rating for features a 10/10.
There's almost nothing you can't do with these headphones.
I'll be giving you a demo to show you just how much detail there really is. First,
you will need to know how to pair the device.
You'll need to hold the power button down for 7 seconds to activate pairing
mode and the blue light will flash. If you're connecting to your phone, you'll
need to go to your Settings and make sure the Bluetooth is on.
From there,
You should see the Sony Wh-1000xm3 on the list and you simply connect. If
you're connecting to a laptop or gaming console or TV you will need to get a
Bluetooth adapter because your device might not recognize your headphones. The
1000xm3 comes with a Google Assistant.
If you don't know what Google Assistant is, it's like your own personal robot.
Every day people are searching on Google for answers and instead of typing all the
time,
you can use your own personal assistant to find answers for you.
You can also automate things such as alarms and reminders. To do this,
you'll need to download the Google app on your phone. Open it and make sure your
headphones are in Bluetooth pairing mode.
You'll see the headphones show up on the app and then you must connect them.
Once they're connected you'll need to sign in using your Google account. From
there,
you can begin using your own personal assistant.
Just click the noise cancellation button
whenever you want to bring it up. On the right ear cup you have controls via a
touch pad as I mentioned earlier.
The functions are as follows:
1. If you tap X2 - you can pause/play music, take/end calls and hold to switch
the device. Swipe forward to skip tracks, swipe backwards to go back, swipe forwards
and hold it to fast-forward, swipe backwards and hold to the re-wind.
Swipe upwards to increase the volume and swipe downwards to decrease the volume. To
be honest,
the touchpad is really annoying and it didn't do some things that I wanted
it to. Most of the functions worked,
but the play/pause was a real issue.
This isn't a major drawback because it's only one thing that doesn't work, but it
needs to be improved. The next thing I'll show you is how to control all the
features on the Sony app. First
you'll need to download the app.
Once that's done, you'll need to register your headphones.
All the settings are on one page which makes it very easy to navigate through.
The Ambient Sound Control can be set to be either automatic or manual. Automatic will
analyze your background and choose the appropriate noise cancellation.
It will also show you what mode it's in. Manual mode gives you more control to
choose the level of noise cancellation at any time.
Click the drop down here and you can increase or decrease the level on the
slider.
Level 0, is max noise cancellation to hear the least amount of background noise
and level 20 is max ambient sound to hear more background noise such as cars or loud
speech.
So the higher you go the more the background noise you'll hear. If you're in a
situation
where you need to hear someone talking,
for example, if you're on a train and you need to know when your next stop is, you can set
the ambient sound to like a level 5 and "click focus on voice" and this will
emphasize vocals more so you can hear what's being said.
My recommendation is that you set the Ambient Sound Control to automatic
but also modifying the presets. There are 4 presets here, which will
automatically be set depending on your environment.
There's staying, walking, running and transport. Make sure you leave walking and
running how it is because you'll be crossing roads and you want to be able to
hear the background noise,
so you're aware of your surroundings.
For the Noise Cancelling Optimizer,
I encourage you to use this as early as possible because when you put them on for
the first time, you might feel a bit of pressure on your eardrums and some people
can find this really uncomfortable after wearing them for a while.
So by optimizing this, it will set the noise cancellation according to your ears
physical characteristics.
This process only takes 10 seconds so make sure you do this so you don't experience
any cabin pressure.
Next you can choose the direction you want the sound to come from, just as you can
with a wireless speaker.
For example, you can play from the rear or from the front.
If you want the sound to just sound normal, then you can leave this off and
this is what I recommend for casual use.
You can also select different environments. The Surround VPT is Sony's software for
making music and videos sounding more airy or spacious.
You can choose things like Arena, Club, Outdoor Stage or Concert. It's supposed to
emulate being at a live performance.
I suggest leaving this off
if you're someone who prefers the original sound. The EQ lets you choose
presets according to your preferred genre of music.
You have presets like Bright, Relaxed, Vocals, Bass Boost etc.
So if you're into Hip-Hop, for example, you want to set the EQ to Bass Boost.
You can use the presets but only set it to manual if you know what you're doing. And the
last few settings should be left how it is.
The one thing I recommend is to set the Noise Cancellation Sound button to Google
Assistant
so you don't have to go to your app all the time. Also set the automatic timer to
turn your headphones off when not in use so you can save battery.
I've done a noise cancellation test and I want to explain to you what you can expect
from these headphones.
When no music is playing and max noise cancellation is on, you'll hear some brief
noise but it will sound quite muffled. Speech for example will sound muffled and a plane
engine will sound like a whisper. Now for the part that you've probably been waiting for
which is sound quality. As I mentioned earlier, Sony has their own codec called LDAC,
but unfortunately only some phones or computers will give you the ability to use
this feature.
Android users can maximize the high resolution audio whereas Apple users will
miss out on some good audio quality.
With that said, different devices will produce different frequency responses.
I've been using the Bass Boost for my preference in music
and I also have an iPhone. The sound quality is A1(A+ grade). The EQ gives you the
ability to enjoy all types of music whether it's Trap, Hip-Hop or Classical and
there isn't any hissing noises or any interference as far as I'm concerned.
I mean some audiophiles may have a few complaints about the soundstage, but
honestly for the average person, the level of sound quality does the price tag
justice. I can't imagine what it would sound like with Android considering
they already sound good with an iPhone.
You can pretty much hear every layer in songs and all the background effects.
They both sound more or less the same wired or wireless.
However, when you used wires, the sound quality is slightly more accurate and they
sound louder.
I must also mention that the noise cancellation doesn't work
when you're in wired mode.
You can only use all the noise cancellation features when you're connected
via Bluetooth. The last few things
I want to go over before I wrap up
this review is a few tests.
I tested the call quality and also watching movies.
The call quality is really clear.
I have no issues with that at all.
I was able to hear who I was talking to when I was at home and also in public. The
person on the other side could also hear me as well.
The mic isn't the best and it could do with some improvement, but you can still
make good quality calls. For watching movies these headphones are where it really
shines.
I honestly love watching movies with these headphones.
The sound is so clear
and when I have max noise cancellation on, I sometimes forget what's even going on
around me. One little tip I have for you if you're watching a Marvel film, set the EQ
to Bass Boost and you'll will love it,
trust me.
My pros and cons for the 1000xm3 is as follows. The pros are - It's extremely
comfortable,
it's got amazing noise cancellation, great sound quality,
it's got the Quick Attention mode feature which is really handy and it's got long
battery life.
The cons are: It's only got small tweaks compared to the 1000xm2, the touch
pad can be really annoying, the microphone could be better
and the last one is, it doesn't have multiple.
If you'd like to get them for the lowest price available today, I'll be leaving a
link down below to get them for a discount instead of paying for the full retail price.
