The MOST Simple Way To Explain The Zelda Timeline (With Lab Rats?) - Duration: 7:07.
So if you didn't know already the timeline for the Legend of Zelda Games is very complicated,
in many different aspects. and the addition of Breath of The Wild has not, helped much.
In fact it caused so much confusion for a while that there was strong theories and ideas
for it falling at the end of any 3 timelines and even merging them was an idea at one point
too, but eventually the team behind the Zelda games gave us confirmation of where the almighty
timeline confusing Breath of The Wild fits in the Zelda timeline.
Now I'm sure it's not just me that has found or still finds the timeline confusing
or intimidating to understand especially at first glance.
So whilst having to explain how the timeline works to my girlfriend I was having a very
hard time explaining it in a way she would understand but then, I came up with a simple
way to put it that I believe could solve a lot of issues regarding confusion on how the
timeline works with Breath of The Wild included.
I also tested this on a few friends who were confused.
It involves imagining some lab rats but don't worry I'll have images and animations on
screen to portray what I mean.
So let's get into what I believe is one of the most simple ways to explain the Zelda
timeline.
Firstly, let's do a quick recap on the timeline.
So from Skyward Sword down to Ocarina of Time it is 100% linear.
Simple as can be, one, two, three, four with some historical events mixed in.
However, after Ocarina of Time it splits into 3 different timelines.
On the left a timeline were the hero is defeated, the fallen timeline.
On the right the adult timeline, this is where we find all our at sea games and the one with
a train, also that one with a train takes place in a newly discovered continent.
Fun fact if you didn't know.
Then in the centre we have the child timeline, the games that have the descendants of Ocarina
of Times Link.
Another fun fact.
The Hero's shade in Twilight Princess is said to be the very Link from Ocarina of Time.

Cringy jokes aside, that was the official timeline from Hyrule historia up until Breath
of The Wild and even without Breath it was still really complicated especially if you
get into the nitty gritty stuff like the sealing war, the great flood and all of that stuff
so confusing.
Now we need to add Breath of The Wild onto all of that.
To explain how Breath fits into the timeline I will explain it as it's shown, then afterwards
use my example which I used to explain it to my girlfriend and a few friends that didn't
quite understand it as it is fairly confusing as to how it works.
So Breath of The Wild falls under all 3 timelines and before you jump to anything no it does
not merge.
Yes it would make a cool looking rupee outline if you had it merging but it sadly doesn't
work like that.
Rather it is the outcome of all 3 timelines no matter what, it's inevitable basically.
Hence why it's displayed like this with a horizontal line and not connecting lines.
This is why there is evidence in Breath of The Wild for it to be in any of the 3 splits.
Rock salt, Lynels, Dialogue and so on.

Anyway how it works is that at the end of the fallen, child and adult timeline the events
of Breath of The Wild is what's going to happen no matter at some point, it's inevitable.
Now this where I heard a lot of friends and just people online getting confused and it
was through a conversation I had that sparked this idea.
I had to put the timeline in a way that was simple to understand.
Yes it does take out elements such as historical events but it does give the concept of how
an inevitable outcome would work.
So you ready?
Alright so as mentioned it involves lab rats.
One famous example of what lab rats have done throughout the history of scientific testing
is these sorta of mazes they go through for all sorts of reasons.
So imagine you have three different mazes and by different I mean they have different
paths to follow to reach the end.
Each maze has one lab rat.
Each maze also represents one of the three timeline splits.
The lab rats are each iteration of Link, fallen, child and adult.
So here it is against the timeline itself.
A linear path at the beginning then three rats or Links split into three different timelines
or in this case mazes.
They all have their own journey and story to follow throughout the timeline but when
they reach the end of their maze or timeline they all meet the same ending, it's inevitable
where these lab rats will end up despite having different journey to get there, just like
each iteration of Link goes through a different journey but over time and history they would
all lead to what happens in Breath of The Wild.
Now yes there isn't three Links ending up at Breath of The Wild, that isn't how the
timeline works.
It's like each split is a possible way the history of Hyrule would go, depending on what
happens from Ocarina of Time.
So what do you think, is this a helpful way to understand how the timeline works with
inclusion of Breath of The Wild?
Personally I believe so as it really worked well to explain it to around 5 individual
who were very lost on it and hey if you didn't really get it until now that's great to
hear too.
My only fear regarding the timeline now is… when the next game is released.
I mean they could make it easy for themselves and create a pre or post Breath of The Wild
game but knowing the Zelda team we will definitely be in for some interesting and in depth lore
no matter where it falls.
