the President of the United States

challenging something

that is important to Canada.

Important to Canada's business community.

[Trump] If it doesn't work out that's going to be fine for the country

for our country.

It won't be fine for Canada.

So there was a lot of Canadian pride

sort of intertwined into this story.

[Freeland] We have entered a new more intensive phase of engagement.

[Simpson] It's important to remember that these talks

they started in what? August of 2017 and

dragged out until October of 2018

[Freeland ] For Canada our focus is on getting a

good deal not just any deal

But it really picked up over the last --

It was like August when it really exploded

[Freeland] We have brought you some popcicles

[Man off camera] Thank you.

[Freeland] We'll see you guys later.

[Simpson] The weather was so brutal.

In that last stretch in August everyone was just so exhausted

and people were sweating in places they didn't know they had sweat glands

I don't have my glasses on because it's too hot to

wear your glasses here.

Hold on, I'm just going take a look around the corner

I think someone's coming.

If you ever told me it would be so hot

and I'd be on TV

and I A) wouldn't be wearing my glasses.

And B) wouldn't be wearing sleeves

I'd say you're crazy.

But that's how hot it is.

And while there's a huge level of respect between

the reporters — and we're all friends

but we do believe in friendly competition.

And you would get this sense of great dread

you know, "What if someone has something that I don't have?"

[Reporter shouting] Deal or no deal mister prime minister? Deal or no deal?

There's nothing more disappointing than that feeling of

"oh how come I didn't have that?"

So everyone really was pushing to

try and get more information

and get that information to your viewers as

quickly as possible

Senior Canadian officials tell me there

is a reasonable chance of success

some kind of deal can be reached by Friday.

[ ♪ ♪ ]

[Simpson] Now when journalists had been setting up

in front of this building there's

a staircase there and

I guess security didn't like us standing on the

staircase so we all moved on to the sidewalk

and so when Jared Kushner came

up we sort of broke the rules a few times

Oh hold on, here comes Jared Kushner

I'm just gonna step it of the way.

W e're gonna get a shot.

Maybe he'll say hello to us.

Hold on one second.

I'm just gonna go up the steps.

How things are going?

Well we tried.

And I'm not allowed to go on the steps

so I'm probably gonna not be welcome to go back

on the steps again

but we might as well try right.

So nothing from Jared Kushner.

There you go anyway. So I'll send it back inside to you.

So that was another one of those really long days in Washington

It had been terribly hot

everyone was so sun tanned and sunburned.

Actually I'm still sunburned.

My skin has not gone back to that normal tone it is

from those long days in Washington

But Chrystia Freeland and the Canadian delegation was

coming back to the U.S. Trade Representative's building

for an evening meeting.

[Simpson to Kushner] Will there be a deal tonight?

[Simpon] Of course at 8:00 p.m.

the normal security apparatus is is not

necessarily in place at these government buildings.

[Simpson to Kushner] How are things going on NAFTA with Canada?

Is it okay?

[Another reporter ask] Actually, how is it going with Canada?

Progress tonight?

[Simpson] And so when Jared Kushner arrived

for that 8:00 p.m. meeting he got to the

front door and he pulled on the door and it was locked.

Someone at security is obviously

not there hearing him sort of pull at the door.

And so he has to get on his phone

and call security to get someone to come

and let him in.

In this moment there were opportunities

for reporters to start

asking some questions

and so we did

[Simpson to Kushner] Is Canada making any compromises?

But when it was quite clear that Kushner

was not going to answer those questions we just

kind of stood back and let the moment kind of breathe.

[ ♪ ♪ ]

And it was so awkward

and so uncomfortable

one of my colleagues actually stopped recording

because it was it was so uncomfortable.

That moment, it was picked up by the

American networks and the American media.

And so they used that moment sort of as

a bigger metaphor

for some of the challenges

going on inside the White House.

So it was one of those moments

that picked up and was more than a NAFTA moment.

Rosie I just got off the phone with the senior source who said to me

just very quickly

deal is done.

It is a done deal.

It's been a year of so much

travel and so much work

and really putting yourself into the story.

I recently turned 35

and what if my friends,unbeknownst to me

she decided to

make me a NAFTA cake

or a USMCA cake.

The icing was red white and blue and

then out of fondant

she made the stairs to the USTR building.

She put Jared Kushner and Robert Lighthizer

on those front stairs.

And then she made a fondant version of me

standing at the bottom of the stairs

and there was a big door on the cake.

Just to sort of be the moment

where Jared Kushner was was locked out.

And actually, I'll tell you something funny.

A lot of journalists

were at my birthday party

and we were all tweeting photos of it because it's

kind of funny

and someone within the Canadian government

saw it and flipped it to Jared Kushner

And Jared Kushner thought it was very funny.

To which Jared Kushner asked for my email

and then emailed to wish me a happy birthday.

Which I thought was unusual

and so I wrote back and I said, "Forgive

me for being skeptical

as to whether this is the real Mr. Kushner or whether

one of my friends is playing an elaborate trick on me

and he wrote back

saying this is not Mr. Kushner this is Jared.

This is not fake news.

And he wished me a happy birthday.

Which was the strangest thing

I think that really

outside of the talks

outside of the process

it was a strange moment

Skagway mayor hit, killed by bus in Washington, D.C.

WASHINGTON NBC An Alaska mayor and her mother were hit and killed by a tour bus Wednesday night in the nations capitol.

Monica Adams Carlson, 61, of Skagway, and her mother, Cora Louise Adams, 85, of Elbe Washington, were struck by the bus while walking near the National Archives Building in downtown Washington, D.C.

Carlson is listed as the mayor of the City of Skagway on the citys website.

The crash happened just before 10 p.m. at 700 Pennsylvania Avenue Northwest, police said. The two women were taken to the hospital but died from their injuries.

The company, Eyre Bus, Tour and Travel, issued a statement on the crash:

"Eyre Bus, Tour and Travel wishes to express our sorrow and sympathy to the families impacted by this accident. We are cooperating fully with authorities in the investigation of this incident. Eyre places the safe transportation of our customers as well as those we share the road with as our number one priority," a release sent through the American Bus Association said.

NBC reports that the crash is still under investigation.

Alaska Gov. Mike Dunleavy and FIrst Lady Rose Dunleavy gave their condolences.

Rose and I join the community of Skagway in mourning the tragic and unexpected deaths of Mayor Carlson and her mother Cora, Dunleavy said in a statement. Mayor Carlson was by all accounts a devoted public servant and proud of her community. Skagways loss is Alaskas loss.

Gov. Dunleavy directed state flags to fly at half staff in honor of Mayor Carlson on Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2019. U.S., and therefore state, flags are at half staff through Dec. 30 in honor of George H.W. Bush and in honor of National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day.

Two pedestrians struck by a tour bus Wednesday evening in downtown Washington have died.

D.C. police said the victims were struck about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday at Seventh Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW. They were identified as Monica Adams Carlson, 61, of Skagway, Alaska, and her mother, Cora Louise Adams, 85, of Elbe, Wash. Carlson was mayor of her town.

The two were in Washington sightseeing and had toured the White Houses Christmas decorations on Wednesday, according to family members.

Police said an initial investigation showed the bus was northbound on Seventh Street, then turned left onto Pennsylvania Avenue when it hit the women, both of whom were in the crosswalk. The victims were taken to a hospital, where police said Thursday morning they had succumbed to their injuries.

Two D.C. police officials familiar with the investigation, which is in a preliminary stage, said the pedestrians had a walk light as they crossed. Police said the two pedestrians were walking northbound on Seventh Street, crossing Pennsylvania on the west side of the street.

Their deaths bring the number of traffic related fatalities in the District this year to 35 — which includes 14 pedestrian deaths — up from 30 people who died in traffic crashes in 2017. The number of deaths this year is the highest since 2008, when 39 people died in traffic crashes.

The bus involved in Wednesday nights crash was operated by Eyre Bus, Tour and Travel, based in Howard County, Md. On Thursday, an executive at Eyre Bus didnt immediately return requests seeking comment.

Melanie Hinton, a spokeswoman for the American Bus Association, said in an email Thursday that she was speaking on behalf of Eyre Bus, Tour and Travel. She wrote that Eyre wishes to express our sorrow and sympathy to the families impacted by this accident. Hinton said Eyre is cooperating fully with authorities in the investigation.

Eyre places the safe transportation of our customers as well as those we share the road with as our number one priority, Hinton said in an email.

Hinton said the driver was seasoned and had been with the company for 18 years. She said there were no passengers aboard the bus at the time.

The bus driver was interviewed and cooperated with police, authorities said, and a drug test of the driver came back negative. No arrest has been made and the investigation is ongoing.

The collision occurred just north of the Mall, near the National Archives and Navy Memorial.

The two women were in the nations capital to visit the monuments and see Christmas decorations. They arrived Tuesday and toured the White House and Arlington National Cemetery. Carlsons husband, Robert, said their only child, Maxwell, 27, is a Marine who served in Afghanistan.

Cora was a pretty patriotic lady, Robert Carlson said in a phone interview shortly after learning of the deaths. He was in Washington state on his way to the District to claim the bodies and pick up their belongings.

Monica Carlson and Adams stayed at the Willard InterContinental Hotel a block from the White House. Robert Carlson said he got a good deal for the elegant hotel, noting his wife was quite frugal.

The couple raised their son in Skagway, a town of about 800 people in the southeast corner of Alaska, 90 miles north of Juneau, and a port for cruise ships. Monica Carlson served as mayor and operations director for the Skagway Street Car Co., which has a fleet of two dozen former school buses that give tours around the town.

Monica Carlson didnt run for mayor, but won on a write in campaign. Her husband said she had been grappling with a dispute between a railroad company — the towns biggest employer — and cruise ships over access to the towns waterfront.

This weeks trip to Washington was a short getaway and holiday break from a busy schedule. Planes werent flying out of Skagway because of snow and wind, so Carlson took a ferry to Juneau before flying to Seattle.

Her mom had never been to Washington, Robert Carlson said.

He stayed in touch with his wife and mother in law during their visit to the District. He was waiting for his wife to call, when instead, he got a call from police. Carlson and Adams were scheduled to return to Alaska on Saturday.

Robert Carlson described his mother in law as a lively 85 year old who ran a hamburger stand in Elbe, Wash., a town of fewer than 100 residents west of Mount Rainier National Park. The stand was made out of an old highway truck weigh station and was called Scales Burgers.

She was a person a lot younger in spirit and in action, Robert Carlson said. She was the rock of her town.

Adams had four children, including his wife, and five grandchildren; her husband of 68 years is still living.

She was strong hearted. There is a big hole in the little town of Elbe today. She came across as a grumpy old lady, but she had a heart of gold, Robert Carlson said.

Blaine Mero, the office administrator of the Skagway Chamber of Commerce, knew Monica Carlson for 30 years as he worked with her on various issues in town. He said she liked the outdoors and enjoyed hiking, as well as traveling with her mother.

They liked each others company, Mero said. They were good friends, very close.

Mero said he heard about their deaths from a friend and went online to learn more.

Its a sad, somber day here. None of us can believe it, he said. She was tenacious. She knew her stuff. She truly wanted the best for the community.

Mero said Carlson would sometimes stop into the office to chat. He said the news of the deaths was shocking to the community, especially given its close knit feel. The town is four blocks wide and 22 blocks long, with no traffic light.

But it does have a busy tourism season for about six months of the year, Mero said. The fact the women died after being hit by a tour bus struck hard.

Its just so shocking, Mero said. Were surrounded by tour buses six months out of the year. We dont have things like this happen.

The intersection where the collision occurred was the site of another crash involving a bus that killed two people nearly 12 years ago. On Valentines Day in 2007, the driver of a Metrobus struck and killed two women in the crosswalk along Pennsylvania Avenue at Seventh Street NW.

The two women — Martha S. Schoenborn, 59, and her co worker Sally Dean McGhee, 54, both from Alexandria — were leaving work at the Federal Trade Commission when they were struck by the bus.

The intersection allows pedestrians 26 seconds to cross the eight lanes of traffic, with two bike lanes along Pennsylvania Avenue at Seventh Street NW.

On Thursday, pedestrians crossed the intersection as they would any other day. One person became stranded on the median, caught there as the 26 second walk period ended before making it to the north side of the street.

Michael Smith, who works at FedEx and lives in the area, said he thought pedestrians didnt have enough time to cross eight vehicle lanes and two bike lanes.

Its short, he said. The light changes every two seconds.

Rachel Maisler, a biking advocate and Ward 4 representative on the D.C. Bicycle Advisory Council, said she planned to reach out to the office of Mayor Muriel E. Bowser D about the rising number of traffic deaths in the city.

We have a crisis on our hands right now, Maisler said. We have an administration that says it is doing everything we need to do to prevent traffic fatalities. But this keeps happening.

ITS ACTUALLY part of what you do when you sign up for any public service position. So Rep. Mark Meadows R N.C. when asked about the hundreds of thousands of federal workers who will have to work without pay or be furloughed without pay over the holidays in a partial government shutdown. You wont get any argument from us about the willingness of those who go into public service to make sacrifices. But they do so hoping to accomplish some good for their fellow citizens, not to be pawns in pointless political gamesmanship.

As it became apparent Friday that no agreement could be reached on a stopgap spending measure, President Trump that a shutdown would last for a very long time. Affected is about a third of the government workforce — about 800,000 employees — in key departments, including Homeland Security, State and Justice. Because of the weekend and upcoming Christmas holidays, the impacts of a shutdown may not immediately be felt, but there should be no mistake that curtailment of these government agencies will impose costs across Washington and the country.

That seemed to be of little matter to Mr. Trump, who last week he would be proud to shut down the government, glad to take the mantle. I will be the one to shut it down. He changed his tune on Friday in trying to shift the blame to Democrats for not going along with his demand for money to build a border wall he once promised would be financed by Mexico. Nothing better illustrates the needless stupidity of the shutdown than Mr. Trumps claim to be taking a stand for border security when one of the agencies is Customs and Border Protection.

Any doubt that it is politics — not principle — driving Mr. Trump was erased when he flip flopped this week on the stopgap spending bill. He signaled he would sign on to a measure, passed by both House and Senate, without wall funding, but then buckled to criticism from the conservative media. Instead of standing up to him — and doing their job of keeping the government running — House Speaker Paul D. Ryan R Wis. and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell R Ky. — went along, once again enabling the worst instincts of a bad president.
