2018 marked an exceptional year for vegan food fashion and beauty let's take
a look at some of the year's biggest highlights 2018 some major strides in
the welfare of animals and in compassionate living in January
Norway announced a total ban on fur farming Norway is Manning for me it's a
really momentous decision given the fact that you know around a hundred years ago
in the 1930s and 40s Norway was the number one fur producer in the world
Norway is a large fur producer with over 300 fur farms breeding and killing over
700,000 minks and a hundred and ten thousand foxes every year
simply for their fur the ban will be finalized by 2025 when all farms in the
country will be required to shut down in June a newly developed computer system
offered up more accurate safety results with artificial intelligence than with
animal testing this breakthrough can predict the toxicity of a substance
almost immediately it's also less expensive and eliminates the ethical
dilemma of testing on animals the Environmental Protection Agency is
currently working toward an end to animal testing as well the list of
countries that ban animal testing continued to expand in 2018 Canada India
Israel and Norway are among many of the countries banning the practice all
countries in the EU have as well California became the first US state to
implement a testing ban with the hope that it will influence other states to
follow suit. Ethical beauty brands had a big year in ending animal testing as
well. Lush donated close to half a million dollars in fundraising to the
cause. e.l.f cosmetics teamed up with beauty bloggers to donate a portion of
profits to end animal testing, and the Body Shop launched the biggest anti
animal testing campaign in the history of the UN.
Global beauty brands are pivoting away from animal testing altogether.
Unilever called for a global ban to the practice, as its brand Dover received PETA's
cruelty-free accreditation. Primark announced that its own brand cosmetics
line will no longer be tested on animals. Covergirl recently announced its
cruelty-free International seal of approval, marking it as free of animal
testing as well. In Buddhism, in Islam, Hinduism, Brahma Kumaris
The Thespian religion considers all of God's creations as sacred. In June, a new short film ANIMA
animals, faith, compassion, challenged traditions and misconceptions
surrounding religion, ethics and animal consumption. The film features
influencers from 12 different faiths, all of whom discuss the pressing need for
better animal welfare, dispelling myths about how their faiths religious texts
regard animals. All the people in the world have a compassion. If we can get
people to change their consciousness so they no longer see animals as objects,
then that changes everything.
In August, vegan Muslims created a new
Qurbani sacrifice tradition with compassion for animals. Eid-al-adha is a
major Islamic holiday celebrated worldwide each August. While the holiday
traditionally requires animal sacrifice, vegan Muslims honor the tradition by
sharing plant-based meals with family, donating vegan groceries to the
community, and opening the dialogue on animal ethics. During the US midterm
elections in November, California voters make Golden State
history with the passing of prop 12.
This one is about farm animals. Prop 12 would
ban the sale of meat and eggs from farm animals being kept in very small cages.
Which will grant egg-laying hens, male calves, and breeding pigs significantly
more space in the factory farming system. Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt
appeared in a PSA to get out the vote with NowThis news, urging Americans to
vote on important matters like prop 12. We the voters have the power to decide
all of this, and it starts now.
Voters also opted to ban commercial greyhound
racing in Florida. The racing greyhounds that have rounded Florida tracks for
decades are headed for their final laps, thanks to the passing of amendment 13.
Florida is home to 11 of the 17 remaining greyhound racing tracks in the US.
Owen Wilson, Ellen DeGeneres and Uzo Aduba were among dozens of celebrities
who signed a letter in support of the greyhound racing ban.
Worldwide, Portugal and the Czech Republic banned wild animal circuses
Mexico City got one step closer to ending bullfighting practices with a new initiative,
Canada is working toward a captured whale and dolphin ban,
Hanoi became the first Vietnamese city to ban the dog meat trade
and New Zealand became the first wool producing country to ban sheep mulesing.
In June, a study published in Circulation: Heart Failure
revealed that a diet high in animal products is linked to an increased risk
of heart failure in middle-aged men. The findings revealed that a higher intake
of animal protein leads to as much as 49% increased risk of heart failure.
Because I think this idea again that that we have to eat meat is just a
complete fallacy. I mean the protein when we you know when we eat that big steak
right to get our protein, where did the protein come from? The grass, right, the plant, right.
On average a person
requires 50 to 60 grams of protein a day or 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of
body weight, but many are over consuming that amount. Excess protein especially
coming from animal sources can have detrimental effects on our health.
There are there are adverse consequences for the overconsumption of protein we it can
increase your risk for heart disease diabetes certain cancers it may actually
increase your risk for osteoporosis.
Vegan American College of Cardiology
fellow dr. Kim Williams says despite its popularity a keto diet is suitable for no one.
Though keto totes a host of health related benefits,
the low-carb diet relies heavily on animal fat and protein as sources of
energy. While this may lead to short-term weight loss, the keto diet's high fat
content is also a concern, especially if it's heavy in saturated animal fats.
If you compare any reduction of animal products with a standard American diet
okay, you will see a progressive decline in the frequency of diabetes,
hypertension and obesity.
Vegan cardiologist dr. Joel Kahn also
recommends avoiding meat altogether due to these severe health risks.
Protein activates aging pathways and it is animal protein rich in an amino acid
called leucine as the main trigger and you can't get around at grass-fed beef
free-range chicken and line-caught fish all have tremendously more leucine than
the amino acid structure of plants. They have it, but they don't have nearly the same amount.
In July, the consumption of omega-3 fish oil supplements to prevent
heart disease was debunked by a new study led by the University of East Anglia
It concluded that omega-3 fats from fish do little if anything to
protect the heart. The review studied 112 thousand randomly selected people and
found that roughly 9% of the subjects died, whether they had taken the
supplement or not. However, the systematic review did find
moderate evidence that ALA fats found in plant oil and nuts may be slightly
protective of some diseases of the heart and circulation.
Additionally, vegan sources of omega-3 are a more sustainable nutrient source than fish.
There's omega-3 fats in walnuts, soybeans, green leafy vegetables and legumes and a whole host
of plant foods again the problem in Western countries is that we have too
much of the refined omega-6 fats in our body and that actually prevents our
bodies from utilizing omega-3s effectively.
In August hundreds of doctors standing in front of the White House
told America to ditch dairy and go vegan..
What simple step can you take right now
that will protect your health, reduce your risk of diabetes, obesity and heart
disease, cut health care costs and protect the environment? Go VEGAN!
The Physicians Committee for Responsible medicine
is a prevention driven nonprofit organization
of plant based medical professionals who organized the gathering. The committee has
also created new initiatives such as bringing preventative plant-based
nutrition to 11 medical schools in India.
Also in August,
vegan Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams launched a vegan nutrition program.
Called the plant-based lifestyle program, the new initiative will service at least
a hundred patients per week with conditions such as heart disease, high
cholesterol, diabetes and high blood pressure. Doctors, nurses and dietitians
will help patients adopt healthy eating patterns.
In November, a new research
review conducted at the University of London showed that those living with
type 2 diabetes can improve their physical symptoms and their mental
health by following a plant-based diet. Researchers reviewed the results of 11
clinical trials published between 1999 and 2017, which compared plant-based
diets with other eating habits. People who consumed a plant-based diet have a
decreased risk of developing type 2 diabetes compared with people who
regularly consume animal products.
And the study showed that depressive symptoms
improved significantly only in groups eating plant-based.

after his heart attack in February. Um did I tell ya that I had a heart attack?

[MUSIC] Where Is The Love - Black Eyed Peas
Black Eyed Peas frontman Will.i.am revealed at the beginning of 2018 that
he too has switched to a vegan diet. Why the mission? Here's why.
I'm tired of being pimped by food companies
and then eating bad poisonous food and then feeling horrible in the morning.
Yo I told my friends that 'imma become a vegan
and live that plant-based diet. The singer was told by his doctor that
he was suffering from both high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Following
the diagnosis, he cut all meat and dairy from his diet. In a more recent Facebook
video Will.I.Am told fans that his vegan diet was a big mistake.
Now that I hear it man we was making so many mistakes
like we love mistakes you know why
because I'm vegan and I don't miss steaks, you know what I'm saying
I don't miss steaks, I don't miss chicken. It turns out the singer actually just
doesn't miss steaks.
At the box office in April, the Avengers Infinity War was a huge hit, but did you
know that many of its leading stars are vegan or vegetarian?
Benedict Cumberbatch who plays Dr. Strange has mentioned his vegan
lifestyle in several interviews. During the filming of Avengers and Thor, actor
Chris Hemsworth also adopted a vegan diet to stay in shape. Danai Gurira who
plays Okoye in the film, acknowledged world vegan day on her Twitter account.
Chadwick Boseman, the Black Panther, recently described himself as mostly
vegan. Actor Peter Dinklage plays Eitri, and has been vegetarian for 15 years
with a recent switch to veganism.
But this is what you pay for every time you
buy meat eggs and dairy products. That's why tens of millions of kind
people just in the United States alone, have decided to leave animal products
off their plates for good.
In May, wedding bells were ringing as the world was
tuning in to watch the Royal Wedding. The new Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle
donned a dress by cruelty free fashion designer Stella McCartney for the royal
wedding reception, following her marriage to Prince Harry. I think it was the last
moment probably that she could reflect sort of the other side to her.
Vegan designer Stella McCartney designed Met Gala dresses for Miley Cyrus and Paris Jackson this year too.
I'm here so excited to be a part of this because I think this moment
can be about so many different things and for me I want to
bring a message which is veganism and that there doesn't have to be torture
in fabulous fashion.
McCartney also teamed up with adidas to launch
the first vegan leather Stan Smith's, the shoes gaining praise from stars like
Madonna and the tennis legend the shoes were named after.
In June, vegan shoes got even more colorful
as vegan star Miley Cyrus launched a new pride converse collection
to support her LGBTQIA+ charity the Happy Hippie Foundation.
Happy Hippie's mission is to fight injustice in our world, specifically focusing on
LGBTQ youth.
Leonardo DiCaprio invested in vegan milk brand Califia farms
adding to his roster of vegan investments that include Beyond Meat and Hippeas.
In November, he also teamed up with environmentalist Jane Goodall to
release a vegan line of clothing to support ape conservation.
Called don't let them disappear the campaign was available in a two-week flash sale.
Former president of Ireland and environmentalist Mary Robinson
urged Ireland to fight climate change by reducing meat consumption.
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change released a report in October
calling for governments to make immediate radical changes to prevent
worsened climate conditions by 2030. This is an issue that requires complete human
solidarity. Human solidarity, if you like, based on self-interest, because we are
all in this together and we have to work together. And addressed the report by
saying that Ireland needs to do more. We will have to change our behavior. We have
to become aspiring vegetarians, eat less meat. What is undermining food security?
And we know that climate change is one of the great underminers and it's
undermining human rights.
In late October, vegan Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton
took home his fifth World Champion title. The British racecar driver drove to
victory in a race in Mexico City, making him the third driver to win five world
champion titles. I do feel the best I've ever felt in my life, in like 32 years, physically.
The athlete went vegan in 2017 taking to social media: Going to
watch What the Health tonight. I'm on a mission to go vegan people. Animal
cruelty, global warming and our personal health is at stake.
2018 was a big year for vegan food innovation, as companies set out to prove
that innovation is the key to sustainable and delicious vegan food options.
2018 kicked off with Don Lee Farms organic vegan burgers becoming
available at Costco. The 36 year old family-run company said that its new
burger was a breakthrough product, made from certified organic beans and seeds.
It's free from GMOs, artificial ingredients and preservatives.
In March, Beyond Meat announced that its best- selling Beyond Burgers were available at
select US target locations. The company requires stores to merchandise its
burgers in the meat section, where it has been gaining popularity with meat eaters,
as well as vegans. The product acts like meat in every way. Beyond Meat CEO Ethan Brown
did not set out to create another mushy veggie burger - he wanted the real thing
but without animal cruelty and environmental degradation
In addition to being available at supermarkets,
the Beyond Burger can also be ordered at a variety of restaurants.
It hopped the pun to the UK this year too and is also
available in Hong Kong and Singapore. Giving beef burgers a run for their money.
In May, fast food chicken chain KFC, announced a plan to overhaul its menu to
feature healthier options, including trialing a vegetarian option in the UK.
The fast food chain known for its deep fried chicken and fries
is aiming to reduce its entire menus calories
by 20% per serving by 2025.
Magnum Almond. Take pleasure seriously.
In August, leading ice cream brand Magnum announced the launch of two vegan ice cream bars.
Magnum's first-ever range of vegan ice cream includes Magnum vegan classic
and Magnum almond. The bars are made from pea protein-based ice cream
and smooth vegan chocolate.
In September, Bay Area Food Tech brand JUST launched
its vegan egg which outsold liquid whole chicken eggs in its first week.
If you served this to me and did not tell me, I would think this is real egg.
Derived from mung beans, the JUST vegan egg looks and tastes like a chicken egg
It's available in a growing number of grocery chains in the Midwest and began hitting
shelves at Gelson's in Southern California earlier this year.
In December, JUST made headlines when it announced that its vegan egg will launch in China,
rivaling its gigantic chicken egg industry.
And we think it's an incredible
opportunity to do so much good, to bring this idea of eating well to more people.
And in another major announcement, JUST recently partnered with Japanese beef
producer Toriyama to develop the first lab-grown Wagyu steaks. Growing meat is
achieved through cellular agriculture, a process that is better for the
environment, with no animal sacrifice required.
I'm proud to unveil the world's
first ever poultry products ever grown from animal cells without the full animal.
JUST joins other food tech companies like Memphis Meats which aims
to bring down the cost of its cruelty-free poultry and make it
available to the masses by 2021.
What will 2019 bring?
