X Factor winner Matt Cardle has been reduced to singing at a hotel alongside acts including a Cilla Black tribute

Seventeen million viewers watched him win the ITV talent show – but he is now performing for guests who get a free ticket if they book a three-night stay

A source told the People: "Matt had a decent start to his career but this is a very long way from headlining at Wembley

" Also appearing with the 35-year-old at the Alvaston Hall hotel in Nantwich, Cheshire, are Rod Stewart and Abba tributes

Details of Matt's new gig come days after Simon Cowell revealed a string of changes to future X Factor series

The show boss, 59, will introduce celebrity specials in a bid to boost falling ratings

Reports claim there will also be a special series where previous winners compete against each other

Matt, who grew up in Halstead, Essex, won the seventh series of the show in 2010

He got a £1million recording contract with Cowell's Syco Music and later signed a deal with Columbia Records

Debut single When We Collide reached number one and became the second biggest-selling single of 2010 — with 815,000 copies snapped up in two weeks

And his first album Letters, in 2011, reached number two — but then things began to go wrong

Matt parted ways with Syco Music and Columbia Records, claiming his management were too busy with One Direction

After a spell in rehab, battling addiction to prescription drugs, he reinvented himself on the stage and won the Best West End Debut award for his role in Memphis in 2015

Last year, he appeared in Strictly Ballroom: The Musical. In a recent interview, he admitted he had been addicted to a cocktail of drugs, saying he was "eating" a daily mix of prescription pills Valium and Tramadol

Matt, now clean, said: "I got lucky on a number of occasions not to have been found f***ing cold

" He revealed he even "downed pills and whiskey on the way to rehab" before he got the help and came close to dying a "number" of times due to binges

He said: "I would wake up in various parts of my flat, in the toilet, in my bedroom, on the bed, off the bed, in the lounge, and it would always be like, 'Oh that's where it ended'

I was never suicidal but I honestly didn't care about myself. "You don't wind up in The Priory if you're looking after yourself

I ­really didn't." Matt attributed his addiction problems to his "frustrations" over how his career was going

He added: "I was being rejected left, right and centre for a record, for all of this kind of stuff

"I was still coming down hard from a place where I didn't have a label, I didn't really have any management at the time, I didn't have a steady place

"And none of it was bitterness but it's just frustration about my fall from grace

" Meanwhile, Matt has not given up on a recording career and is still writing and recording music

His spokesman said: "Matt has re-signed with Sony Music. He features on the new Trevor Horn album and will be appearing on The Jonathan Ross Show next month

"
