Good Samaritan picks up hotel tab for 70 homeless as Chicago flirts with all time cold record Chic

A good Samaritan has offered to spring for hotel rooms for 70 people who were camped out in tents overnight after their propane tanks were confiscated, leaving them without any source of heat.

Isnt that wonderful? At least theyre warm and theyre safe, said Salvation Army spokeswoman Jacqueline Rachev.

The 70 people had set up tents and spent the night in a makeshift camp on Roosevelt Road near the Dan Ryan Expressway. By 6 a.m. Wednesday, the with a wind chill of 49 degrees below zero.

But on Wednesday afternoon, one of about 100 donated propane tanks the group was using exploded, according to Rachev.

The incident caused a hazardous materials response by the Chicago Fire Department, but no one was injured, said department Chief Walter Schroeder.

Ducking under a blue tarp hung across an opening in a wire fence, Richard Vargas and Mimi Hristova shuffled through mounds of snow, pausing at each of close to a dozen tents in a small lot near Roosevelt Road and the Dan Ryan Expressway.

Salvation Army, hats gloves scarves socks! Vargas bellowed....

We responded to a fire, Schroeder said. When we got there, the fire was extinguished and they found all these propane cylinders. Thats when we escalated it to a Level I Hazmat.

The chief understood the act of kindness to help those in need, but urged against the use of the tanks.

There was a significant amount of propane there, and with that many cylinders, thats like a bomb going off, Schroeder said.

The city immediately notified Rachev, who began preparations for those in the makeshift camp to move to the Salvation Armys warming center, 825 N. Christiana Ave.

Then, about an hour later, the city called again and informed them of the gesture.

Only one man decided not to take them up on the offer, and he has checked into the warming center on Christiana, known as the Freedom Center.

Rachev was not sure of the identity of the good Samaritan and only knew the hotel was on the citys South Side.

All the folks there, some wonderful citizen is going to put all of them up at a hotel for the rest of the week, she said.

Doctors and other volunteers visited homeless encampments amid the bitter temperatures, trying to help anyone who needed assistance.

Dr. Ralph Ryan, a retired cardiologist, is a volunteer with a street medicine van operated by nonprofit Night Ministry. The group rolled out on Tuesday to check on homeless people across the city.

Ryan moved from tent to tent and asked if anyone needed anything. If he got no response, he told the , he was prepared to break protocol and open the tent to make sure those inside were alive.

One 53 year old woman, Karen, who was staying in a tent, told Ryan what clothes she was wearing.

Pants, sweatpants, long underwear, a long sleeve shirt, two sweatshirts, a jacket, two pairs of socks. And sneakers, she said. And five blankets when I sleep, she said.

She said her feet felt numb and that she might have to go to a shelter. But Ryan said that many homeless people say what they believe the volunteers want to hear.

They tell us what they think we want to hear a lot of the time, Ryan said.

Mum makes 'traumatising' discovery in hotel room with 'blood on the sheets' - News Live - Duration: 2:27.

A mum made a horrifying discovery in her hotel room over the weekend, after discovering blood stains and some unwanted guests on the bed sheets.

Kali Powell from Austin, Texas, wrote on Facebook that she was visiting the Drury Inn and Suites in San Antonio with her family when she made the unpleasant find.

She wrote on the social media platform: "Let me tell you about how we spent the last hour at the AMAZING bedbug infested Drury Inn & Suites in San Antonio!

"Safe to say that Carter who loves going to hotels is officially traumatized."

Kali said in a further that she only noticed the bugs after her children fell asleep, and saw them "crawling all over" her little ones.

"Poor kids were laying in the beds with these things crawling all over eating away at them", she wrote.

She uploaded a series of skin-crawling pictures showing the bugs all over the bed, the headboard and in the sheets.

The post was shared over 1,400 times and dozens of people commented sympathising with the grim experience, saying it looked "nasty" and "disgusting".

Others warned her to be vigilant about checking her luggage and clothes so she doesn't bring any of the pests home with her.

Speaking to WOAI News on Monday, Kali said that she was "traumatised" by the incident, as were her children and her mother, adding that it was the most "nasty thing".

She added that there was "blood on the sheets" from the bugs being squashed as she "flipped the sheets".

A spokesperson for Drury Hotels said to WOAI News: "No hotel can prevent bedbugs from being introduced, but we are extremely vigilant and take proactive steps to check on a daily basis and treat any issues as soon as they are discovered.

"We are currently treating one room in our hotel. Surrounding rooms and areas have been thoroughly inspected and no evidence of bedbugs has been detected.

"Upon finding out about the incident, we immediately moved the guest to another room and did not charge for the stay. We are sorry for the inconvenience this caused our guest."

Mirror Online has contacted Drury Hotels for comment.
