hi I'm Jen and I wanted to share a revelation with you I never knew how

easy it was to make your own pickles

dill pickles are that perfect summer item to have on hand for all those

backyard barbecues I mean they go great with hot dogs so I decided to come up

with my own recipe for fridge pickles I was seeing them everywhere so this is

sort of my own little secret recipe they're really easy to make it only

takes about like 10 to 15 minutes to prep and then three days in the fridge

so here it is in a saucepan on your stove heat this up 3 cups of water one

and a half cups of vinegar white vinegar

1 teaspoon of sugar and 1 tablespoon of sea salt bring this to a boil stir it

make sure you're stirring it and then set it aside to cool

in the meantime cut up your cucumbers wash them I did some of them by to have

some of them by the quarter depending on how large they were and then I actually

used I recycle my spaghetti sauce jars or pasta sauce jars wash them out clean

them out real good and then I use those for the pickles so I filled my jars with

the pickles then I added some crushed up garlic minced garlic some fresh dill

and then I also added a little bit of onion powder and Tellicherry peppercorns

ground up in the grinder so once your liquid cools and make sure you keep

stirring that so the liquids don't separate make sure that liquid is cool

and then pour it over tops of all the cucumber's put the lids on and then

literally just put them in the fridge for at least three days and they will be

ready to go isn't that super easy and as far as cost goes these can be a bit of a

money saver a jar of pickles nice pickles at the store can be like three

to four dollars I bought a very large bag of mini cucumbers from Walmart for

298 I got some fresh dill for about a dollar ninety eight and then I also the

other ingredients are pretty minimal cost wise so I made four jars of pickles

for about eight dollars and I'm sure these are probably better too so let's

give these a try it's gonna have that nice satisfying crunch to it I can tell

mmm absolutely perfect what a great simple

and most importantly quick recipe perfect for summer try these out for

sure I'm gonna leave my recipe in the description box my husband also helped

me come up with it too so I can't take all the credit if you enjoy making

fridge pickles let me know what you think as well and if you found this

New Smoothie Recipe! Emerald Green Gem // Simple Green Smoothies - Duration: 3:10.

Hi there

I'm Jen from simple green smoothies where I'm on a mission to help you

Fuel your passion and today I want to take you inside my new book

Which is called simple green meals where there's over a hundred plant powered recipes

Snacks meals desserts that are going to help you thrive from the inside out

The recipe I want to make for you today is called the emerald green gem and yeah

It's a green smoothie recipe because that is really at my signature. Jam

and

I wanted to make sure that you can try this before it's even out so you can see if you like it and give it

A thumbs up if you do

Okay, we are gonna take one cup of fresh spinach

Which is really about one good sized

handful

so you can just grab it out of the container that way put it into the blender and

That is how you get one cup of spinach now

We are gonna add one orange that's peeled, but you don't have to worry about getting all the little pieces off of it

which is the pith go ahead and leave that in there that has the most vitamin C of the orange and we want all the

Vitamins we can get in this smoothie. Now. We're gonna add in one cup of water. I like to use filtered water

It's just cleaner tasting less impurities in it. If you're not using a high-powered blender like a KitchenAid or a Vitamix or Blendtec

Then you're gonna want to pause right now and blend your ingredients together

So this will help avoid any leafy chunks because you do not want those in your final smoothie

Or in your teeth and kids never like that either

You know

now let's add in the banana and the quarter of an avocado which has a lot of healthy fats and vitamin E in it and

Vitamin E is great for our skin and that is something that we always need more of

So if you notice that when you have a smoothie for breakfast and you're like immediately hungry afterwards

It's probably because you're not adding enough healthy fats to your smoothie

So give this one a shot and see how you feel

The last thing we're gonna add is half a cup of frozen peaches and we're using frozen peaches because it's easy. They're already cut

They're already chilled

It's kind of like the ice cube of the smoothie, but also adding this delicious summer

Refreshing peach flavor - all right. Now we're gonna put the lid on the blender turn it on and watch it blend

Depending on the blender you're using this could take two minutes to blend or it could take as little as thirty seconds

So just pay attention watch your container. And as soon as all the leafy chunks are gone. I would say it's ready to go

Alright now that we've finished blending the Emerald Green Gem smoothie

We're gonna pour it into the glass and this recipe makes one serving

So it's about a 16 ounce mason jar full of green goodness

If you want to make more for a friend just double the recipe and you can do it that way, too

This is just one of over a hundred recipes that you can get in my new book called Simple Green Meals if you love this

Recipe I have a love for you to give it a thumbs up

If you have any questions or want to leave a comment below

I would appreciate that so much and make sure to subscribe to my channel where I'm gonna keep sharing recipes

That I drink and eat for me and my family so that I can do the things that matter most to me

alright, peace love and leafy greens

How Beliefs Shape Reality (3 SIMPLE TIPS TO CHANGE HOW YOU THINK | CHANGE YOUR LIFE) - Duration: 6:33.

Jen Omohundro: Want to know how your beliefs shape reality and learn three tips to change

how you think and change your life?

Watch this video, and I'll share with you just how I've done that for myself and how

you can, too.

I'm Jen Omohundro, from twominuteswithjen.com.

I post weekly with tips and strategies to help you go from the "no, I can't" to

the "no one can stop me" mindset.

Be sure to subscribe to my channel and hit the bell to be notified when I post a new

video every Tuesday.

If you're feeling stuck, frustrated with life, or simply not fully in love with where and

who you are in life right now, I'm going to share with you three super simple tips that

you can start right now to begin to turn everything around.

I've used this for myself, as well as have many, many other super successful people,

and now it's your turn.

Jen Omohundro: Okay, so before we dive into this, I want to be completely transparent

with you.

In the past, I used to be one of those people, who would think the tips like I'm about to

share with you were a bunch of BS.

To me it was just like, okay, that's not logical.

That's not the way that life is.

Reality is ... Reality is not everything that we think and we see, and we are actually able

to change our beliefs and change our life.

Jen Omohundro: If you're one of those people, who is like the old Jen, I totally get it.

You're in good company.

Stick with me.

Hear me out.

Try these super simple tips, and I think you'll be pleasantly, pleasantly surprised, as well.

Jen Omohundro: Tip number one is to show gratitude daily.

Yes, it is that simple to start.

Show gratitude daily to start to change your beliefs, how you feel and how you think, and

change your life.

What happens here is you're using the Law of Attraction.

The Law of Attraction is basically what you put out, you're going to get back.

I like to start my morning every morning with writing in a gratitude journal.

Mine is nothing fancy.

It's a simple little journal.

I just fill it generally with the same core things initially, which is I'm most grateful

for my family, our health, our home, that sort of thing.

Jen Omohundro: The rest, for me ... Because I do it in the morning, I usually like to

reference what I'm grateful for the day before.

You can do this at any time of day.

The point is to do it, to get in the habit of appreciating all the things that are around

you, that you do have now, that you love.

Comment below, and let me know.

Do you have a gratitude journal that you're already using?

If so, do you have a particular one that I should give a shot.

Again, mine's just basic and simple.

I'd love to hear it.

Jen Omohundro: Tip number two is to give love.

I'm not just talking about the way that you love a partner, but love in general.

When we give positive energy, we are giving love.

When we give negative energy, it's simply a lack of love.

There's not any in between, whether we go through stages of the amount of love that

we are giving.

Think about it this way.

In tip number one, when you're showing gratitude, that is an expression of love.

That is how you are evoking the Law of Attraction, because the Law of Attraction actually is

a law of love.

That's all we're talking about, so the thoughts, the feelings, and the energy that we are giving

out, and what we are attracting back to us.

Jen Omohundro: Be very aware, and give love to everything that you love around you.

Now, I'm not talking about you have to go nuts and talk to the trees and hug the trees

and do all that mess, but be aware of it.

Be thankful for it.

Love it.

When you're going out to dinner with a friend, be in the moment.

Love that moment.

Love that food.

Think about it.

Jen Omohundro: If you're surrounded by things that you don't love, simply do your best to

give them no thought.

We don't want to be putting out the negative energy with giving a lack of love, okay?

We want to work on putting out the positive energy by giving love, and then watch all

these amazing feelings and things come right back to you.

Jen Omohundro: Tip number three is to use your imagination.

I know you're probably thinking I'm totally strange right now, not normal at all, and

you know what I say?

Thank you.

I don't want to be normal.

I don't want to have a normal life.

I want to have a fabulous life.

You are going to thank me, too, when you start really implementing these three simple tips.

Jen Omohundro: What do I mean by imagination?

What do you want most in life?

Is it to travel?

Is it a dream job that feels completely out of touch right now?

Is it to own a house on the beach, where you can sit with your bum in the sand, sipping

on coconut drinks all day?

Ah, that one does sound pretty nice.

Jen Omohundro: Well, imagine it, and you can have it.

Here's the thing.

The Law of Attraction does not know the difference between real and imagination.

What it reacts to is our feelings and our thoughts.

Imagine yourself as the person that you want to be, as though you are that person right

now.

Do this fun little game at least twice per day, for five minutes each time.

That's going to give you enough time to really evoke those amazing, powerful feelings that

will put the Law of Attraction into order for you.

I want you to play and pretend as though you have it now.

Jen Omohundro: If you had that dream job, for instance, how would you feel?

How would you dress?

Dress like you have it.

You would probably stand a little bit taller, shoulders back a little bit more.

Definitely you would be more confident.

Jen Omohundro: Why is using your imagination so important?

Well, two reasons: One, because those positive thoughts and feelings are putting that energy

out there that, like we've discussed, is going to bring that positive energy right back to

you, and, number two, because truly if you can imagine it and you can believe it, you

can have it.

Now you know the three simple tips that you can start right now to begin changing your

life through awareness of your beliefs and how you feel and how you think.

Jen Omohundro: What happens when life happens, when negativity comes around or you get a

Negative Nancy trying to bring you down?

Three Simple Journal Entries - Duration: 4:38.

Okay here's the buzz, here's the deal, here's what's happening: Journal entries

are what we use as accountants to record transactions and we think of the world

in terms of debits and credits. So before we go any further let's do three simple

journal entries together to make sure that we have a good handle on how to

record transactions. So Marx Industries had the following transactions. They

borrowed $5,000 from the bank. They paid $3,100 for a new computer and they

purchased $860 worth of supplies on account.

So remember that assets increase with debits. Liabilities and owner's equity accounts increase with credits.

Expenses are debits, expense are debits, expenses are debits.

The opposite of expenses is revenue or sales. Those accounts increase with credits and

drawing starts with D. That reminds us that owner's drawings are recorded with debits.

Or you can look at the way the book looks at it. The book has the

accounting equation laid out and reminds us that assets increase with debits and

decrease with credits. Liabilities increase with credits and decrease with

debits. Aand basically owner's equity increases with credits and decreases

with debits. So both types of accounts on the right-hand side of the balance sheet

increase with credits and decrease with debits. And more specifically the owner's

equity account increases with revenue accounts which are recorded with credits

and decrease with expenses which are recorded with debits.

So the first transaction (they didn't give us a date) but let's put in January first because

we're learning about how journal entries work and we debit Cash. Cash is an asset.

This asset is increasing because we borrowed money from the bank. Assets increase with debits.

so we're debiting Cash. We credit an

account called Notes Payable and it might also be called, uh, Short-term Debt

or Long-term Debt. It depends on whether this note is due this year or over a

year from now. And so the exact title isn't important whether you say Debt or

Notes Payable it doesn't really matter the important thing is that you use an

account title and not a phrase. You don't say "borrowed cash" You don't say "signed a

note payable" You debit and credit specific accounts.

And if you insist on a phrase or a sentence by all means stick it down here

in the memo section where I assume we borrowed this money from Chase Bank.

The next transaction: we got a new computer. Computer is an asset. Assets increase

with debits we know that from our chart. We also know it from our book's scenario

they have laid out for us down there. You could have also called this Office

Equipment or Office Computer. The important thing, again, is to use an

account title. Cash is an asset. It increases with debits and decreases with

credits. So we credit cash for $3,100 and again these are exact account titles. The

only place we put a phrase or sentence is in this memo section here and I

pretended like we bought Bob his new computer. All right why don't you pause

this video and see if you can do the third journal entry?

So I hope you got it! Supplies is an asset. Assets increase with debits. "On account" means an account payable that's

a liability account. Any account that has the word "payable" "accrued" or "unearned" in

it is a liability account it means you owe somebody something. In this case we

owe somebody some cash. Those liability accounts always increase

with credits. So our third journal entry, again let's pretend like it's January

1st, we debit the account Supplies. We credit the account Accounts Payable and

we put a little note down here and I pretended like we bought it from Staples.

All right so whether you think of the basic six rules or you think of this

little chart here or you think of the book's accounting equation expanded down

here you should be starting to get a good handle on exactly how debits and

credits work. And notice that they always balance - $5,000 worth of debits $5,000 worth of credits

and that we always use account titles. The only time we use

phrases or sentences is down in the memo section to remind us and, more

importantly, the next person exactly what happened. All right. I hope that helps.

SIMPLE TIPS ON HOW TO UNDERSTAND ENGLISH MOVIES [Subtitles] - Duration: 9:43.

Hi, I'm Jennifer certified the English teacher and communications expert. In today's video

I'm going to share three tips on how to understand English movies. At the end of the video,

I'll share with you a bonus

exercise that you can do to instantly improve your listening skills.

Alright, let's get started.

So let's make it simple. When you're listening to an english movie,

You don't need to understand every single word in order to understand the overall

idea. And in fact, this is how native English speakers watch movies.

I don't listen to every single word, and I don't

understand

every single word. In fact,

many times when I'm watching a movie, I'll turn to my friends and I'll say what they say:

My friends will say I don't know. We both didn't hear what they said.

Now do you think we're going to pause the movie,

rewind,

turn on

subtitles or start saying Ohh, I guess we'll never know how to do it.

No, of course not you know what we do. We keep watching the movie. We don't care. The

only time I would rewind the movie is if it was the

vital moment

They just revealed a big secret or a big plot twist. And I didn't

understand. That's the only time I would rewind and listen again.

So don't worry if you don't understand every single idea.

But you should be able to follow the overall plot. The overall

movie. If you're watching a movie and you realize you don't understand it, well

then likely that movie is just too complex for you at this time

and I would suggest stop watching it and try something different or try a short TV show instead.

Okay

Subtitles are a band-aid fix which means they don't actually solve the problem. They just

temporarily

cover up the problem. But, your problem is

you're not able to understand fast English.

Natural English. When you use subtitles, you're actually not improving your listening skills

anymore. At that point you've switched and your brain is not focusing on reading. Your brain

cannot focus on two different things at once. So while is focusing on reading, it is not

focusing on your listening skills.

So, to be honest,

I think relying on subtitles is the worst thing you could do and it doesn't solve the problem.

It's an easy fix, a quick fix, but not a long-term solution.

Because the reason why you want to understand English movies is so you can also understand

fast-paced English conversations. Because the language they use in movies is the same

language that's used in everyday situations like a business meeting,

ordering food at a restaurant,

going to a networking event. All of these use the same style of English in movies.

So when you're at a business meeting you cannot ask for subtitles.

When you're at a restaurant,

you cannot ask the waiter to write down everything they're saying and give it to you. So because of that

don't rely on titles. It doesn't solve the problem.

Because I said you can't rely on subtitles, at the beginning

watching a two-hour movie is probably going to overwhelm you. It's just

too long. It's too much practice.

It's like if you were starting to speak English and instead of just having a short 30 second

conversation you gave a two-hour speech. That's just too much. It's

overwhelming so instead find a short clip on YouTube.

So maybe it could be the movie trailer.

The movie trailer is going to be about three minutes long and it's going to be a combination of

graphics and

speaking so that three minutes is not speaking the entire time.

Or you can just watch a clip of an older movie. That's now

posted on YouTube and just watch a very short portion and at that point

you can watch it again and again and really study it and become

familiar with this type of language they're using. Listen for the expressions. Listen for the pronunciation

changes. Hear those reductions. And from there, if you can understand a short clip,

there's no reason why you can't understand longer and longer clips. But first start small,

become comfortable with the style of English and then work your way up towards longer and longer

clips until you're finally able to watch a full movie without subtitles

and be able to understand the overall

idea. That's your goal.

Okay

This is the best thing you can do to improve your listening skills.

that uses natural

English. So a fast paced clip I recommend using the TV show friends because there are so many

different friends episodes available on YouTube and the language they use and Friends is the same language you'll hear in

everyday English. That's it.

Just 10 seconds, but step 3 write down exactly

what you hear, word for word. That's

transcribe.

Transcribe the clip. Write it down word for word.

Listen to the prepositions, the pronunciation changes, get everything.

You're not going to be able to transcribe a 10 second clip the first time you watch it. In fact when I do this exercise

with English clips, it takes me

3 4 5 times to hear every single word.

and see how close you were to the actual clip and then watch again and

listen along with the subtitles. So you're listening to subtitles as

practice. It's okay to use subtitles when you're practicing

English but not in a real situation when you're just watching a movie for a leisurely activity.

That's when subtitles do more harm than good. But when you're practicing

absolutely use the subtitles. Do this exercise every single day. It will only take you five minutes.

But you're going to learn so much your brain is going to pick up on all these

pronunciation changes,

expressions used, you're going to train your ear to hear the natural reductions,

and the expressions, and it is such great practice. And it only takes five minutes.

So there you have it. You're well on your way to understanding

English movies.

Alright, so I'm dying to know what's your favorite English movie?

Let me know in the comments. If you found this video helpful, please hit the like button share it with your friends

And of course subscribe, thank you so much for watching and until next time happy studying.

Pronunciation - VERBS + -ED | Simple Past Tense | Three ways of pronouncing -ed, [t], [id], & [d] - Duration: 17:24.

Hey, what's going on? In the previous video, you learnt about the Past simple tense.

Today, you're gonna learn three possible ways of pronouncing -ed. Let's get started.

The past simple is the form of a verb used to describe an action that happened before the present time

and is no longer happening. It is usually made by adding -ed.

That's what you learnt from the previous lessons, right?

Do you know that when we add -ed to verbs ending in different sounds,

we will pronounce -ed variously as well?

In fact, there are three possible ways of pronouncing -ed.

The first one is [t], T sound.

To ensure you guys can hear me clearly, I'm gonna pronounce this sound as [T], much louder than usual.

The second one is [id].

I'm sure you won't have any problem with this because it's quite easy.

Lastly, the third way of pronouncing -ed is [d], D sound.

I'm gonna pronounce this sound as [D], much louder than usual, especially in this lesson,

so that you can distinguish this one with [T], T sound.

Many students don't actually understand when they should pronounce -ed as [T]

and when they should pronounce -ed as [D].

I admit this is quite complicated.

Therefore, I'm gonna do my best to keep this simple and clear things up for you.

First of all, let's talk about [T]. When should we pronounce -ed as [T]?

Well, we pronounce -ed as [T] when we add -ed to verbs ending in the sounds:

[p], [k], [f], [s], [ʃ], [tʃ], [θ].

It's quite hard for you guys to distinguish those sounds, right?

So, to explain better, I'd like to pronounce these sounds much louder than usual.

Listen to the sounds again: [P], [K], [F], [S], [ʃ], [tʃ], [θ].

In the reality, of course, we don't pronounce the ending sounds like that.

For instance, we just say "hope". We don't say "hoPe".

I just pronounce those ending sounds that way for better explanation in this particular lesson.

Please keep that in mind.

Let me give you some examples so that you can understand more. Look at this table.

The first column is "Ending sounds". Let's say we have [P].

In the second column, let's put one verb, hope. The ending sound of "hope" is [P].

Please don't confuse between the ending sound of a verb and the last letter of that verb.

The ending sound of the verb "hope" is [P], while the last letter of that verb is "e".

We're talking about the ending sound, not the last letter.

Next, when we add -ed to the verb "hope" which has the ending sound [P], we're gonna pronounce -ed as [T].

hoped [t], hoped [t]

For example, I hoped [t] he could pass the exam.

Now, let's check out the other ending sounds. [k], [K].

risk [k], risk [k]

When we add -ed to "risk", we're gonna pronounce it as risked [t], risked [t].

The rescuers risked [t] their lives to save her.

Next, [f], [F]

laugh [f], laugh [f]

When we add -ed to "laugh", we're gonna pronounce it as laughed [t], laughed [t].

They laughed [t] at her jokes.

Then,

[s], [S]

miss [s], miss [s]

missed [t], missed [t]

I missed [t] the beginning of the show.

Let's move on

[ʃ], [ʃ]

wash [ʃ], wash [ʃ]

When we add -ed to "wash", we're gonna pronounce it as washed [t], washed [t].

David washed [t] his face and combed his hair.

Next,

[tʃ], [tʃ]

watch [tʃ], watch [tʃ]

Here is how we pronounce this verb when we add -ed to it, watched [t], watched [t]

I watched [t] TV for a couple of hours.

Finally,

[θ], [θ]

froth [θ], froth [θ]

When we add -ed to "froth", we're gonna pronounce it as frothed [t], frothed [t].

The waves frothed [t] as they crashed [t] onto the beach.

That is how we pronounce -ed as [T] when we add -ed to verbs. Let's move on to the second one.

[id]. When should we pronounce -ed as [id]? Well, this is really really simple.

We pronounce -ed as [id] when we add -ed to verbs ending in the sounds: [d], [t].

To explain better, I'd like to pronounce these sounds much louder than usual.

Listen to the sounds again: [D], [T].

Let me give you some examples so that you can understand more. Look at this table.

Let's say we have [D] in the first column, Ending sounds.

In the second column, let's put one verb, end. The ending sound of "end" is [D].

Next, when we add -ed to the verb "end" which has the ending sound [D], we're gonna pronounce -ed as [id].

ended [id], ended [id]

For example, the game ended [id] in a draw.

Let's look at the next ending sound. [t], [T]

accept [t], accept [t]

When we add -ed to "accept", we're gonna pronounce it as accepted [id], accepted [id].

She accepted [id] the job offer.

That is how we pronounce -ed as [id] when we add -ed to verbs.

If you're with me this far, that means you have completed around 95% of the road.

The rest is too easy. Let's move on to the last one and I'll tell you why.

When should we pronounce -ed as [D]?

The answer is we do that when we add -ed to verbs ending in voiced sounds.

There is a long list of voiced sounds.

Fortunately, you don't have to remember them at all. Let me show you how.

We pronounce -ed as [D] when we add -ed to all other verbs. What do I mean by "all other verbs"?

Remember there are three possible ways of pronouncing -ed.

Let's say there are three groups, 1, 2 and 3.

When we add -ed to verbs ending in the sounds in group 1, we pronounce -ed as [T].

When we add -ed to verbs ending in the sounds in group 2, we pronounce -ed as [id].

"All other verbs" mean the ones which do not have the ending sounds in groups 1 and 2.

When we add -ed to verbs in group 3, we pronounce -ed as [D].

Thus, your task is just to remember the ending sounds in groups 1 and 2. Why is that?

The reason is if a verb doesn't have the ending sounds in groups 1 and 2, then it must be in group 3.

It's that simple. Hence, you don't have to remember the ending sounds in group 3 anymore.

Let me give you some examples. Look at this table.

Let's say we have [n], N sound, in the first column.

I'm gonna pronounce this sound much louder than usual for better explanation, [N].

In the second column, let's put one verb, phone. The ending sound of "phone" is [N].

Next, when we add -ed to the verb "phone" which has the ending sound [N], we're gonna pronounce -ed as [D].

phoned [d], phoned [d]

Why is that? The reason is the ending sound [N] does not belong to groups 1 and 2.

Therefore, it must be in group 3.

For example, she phoned [d] just after lunch.

Let's look at the next ending sound. [v].

For better explanation, I also pronounce this sound much louder, [V].

move [v], move [v]

When we add -ed to "move", we're gonna pronounce it as moved [d], moved [d].

Share prices moved [d] up slowly yesterday.

That is how we pronounce -ed as [D] when we add -ed to verbs.

Some people may ask "how do I know the ending sound of a verb

if I don't even have any idea how to pronounce the infinitive form of that verb correctly?"

Do you have that question as well? If so, it's time for you to get the answer.

All you need to do is to open an English dictionary, Cambridge dictionary for example.

Then you can type a verb. Let's say we're gonna type "announce".

After that, you can find the pronunciation of that verb easily. You can also see the ending sound of the verb.

For instance, the ending sound of the verb "announce" is [S]. You can see it right here.

Remember we need to know the ending sound of the verb, not the last letter of that one.

The last letter of "announce" is "e". However, the ending sound of "announce" is [S].

That is the one you're looking for.

As you know the ending sound of a verb, you can check whether it belongs to group 1, 2 or 3.

Then, you know how to pronounce -ed when you add -ed to that verb. In this situation, [S] is in group 1.

Thus, we're gonna pronounce -ed as [T] when we add -ed to "announce".

announced [t], announced [t]

Let's check another one. "investigate". As you can see, the last letter of "investigate" is "e".

However, the ending sound of "investigate" is [T]. That's what we need to know.

Since [T] is in group 2, we're gonna pronounce -ed as [id] when we add -ed to "investigate".

investigated [id], investigated [id]

Let me give you one more example. "rob". The ending sound of "rob" is [B].

Can you find [B] in group 1? No, it's not there. How about group 2? No, it's not there either.

So, it must be in group 3 then. When we add -ed to verbs in group 3, we pronounce -ed as [D].

robbed [d], robbed [d]

That's quite enough for theory, right? It's time for you to practice.

In this first assignment, listen and match how -ed is pronounced for these verbs (1-3) with the symbols (a-c).

Here we go.

Have you finished? Let's check out the answer.

Remember there are three possible ways of pronouncing -ed

depending on the ending sounds of the verbs you're adding -ed to.

Look at number 1, the ending sound of the verb "ask" is [K]. It is in group 1.

Therefore, we pronounce -ed as [T] in this case.

asked [t], asked [t].

Number 2, the verb "mend" has the ending sound [D]. It is in group 2. Thus, we pronounce -ed as [id].

mended [id], mended [id].

The third verb, "call", doesn't have the ending sound in groups 1 and 2. Hence, it must be in group 3.

We pronounce -ed as [D] when we add -ed to verbs in group 3.

called [d], called [d].

Now, let's move on to the second assignment.

Listen and write each of these verbs in the correct column of the table below,

according to how -ed is pronounced.

Have you finished? Let's check out the answer.

Look at the first column where we're gonna pronounce -ed as [T] for the following verbs:

asked, finished, hoped, liked, looked, watched, wished.

Those verbs have the ending sounds in group 1.

In the second column, we're gonna pronounce -ed as [id] for the following verbs:

ended, invented, needed, started, wanted.

Those verbs have the ending sounds in group 2.

Finally, in the third column, we're gonna pronounce -ed as [D] for all other verbs

which do not have the ending sounds in groups 1 and 2.

appeared, enjoyed, improved, occurred, played, remembered

Please practice by saying the verbs in this assignment as many times as possible.

Let's go to the last assignment of the day. Read these sentences aloud as many times as possible.

Then say if they are true or false for you. If they are false, make a sentence about the topic which is true.

Use this table to help you with -ed pronunciation.

I'm gonna read all of these sentences aloud one time. You can practice with me.

1 I never watched television when I was a child.

2 My parents wanted me to study medicine.

3 I started studying English when I was 11.

4 I usually enjoyed myself at school.

5 I never worked hard for exams when I was a child. I just studied a little the night before.

6 At school, when I got high marks, I was surprised.

7 When I couldn't do homework, I asked my parents to help me.

8 When the school holidays came, I felt excited.

There's one thing I'd like to remind you guys.

The words "surprised" in number 6 and "excited" in number 8 are both adjectives.

However, the way we pronounce -ed in those words

are just exactly the same as what you have learnt so far in this lesson.

Well, let's see whether these sentences are true or false for me. I think number 1 is false.

Actually, I watched television a lot when I was a child.

Alright, it's your turn to practice now.

That's it for today. I hope I've cleared things up a little bit for you

and helped you understand how to pronounce -ed correctly.

If you've got any questions, please post those in the comment.

-------------------------------------------

The simple solution to the AFL's big problem - Duration: 10:13.

I'm really torn about this whole debate on rule changes. After Tuesday's news that one of the likely recommendations of the AFL's new Competition Committee is a 6-6-6 formation at centre bounces, I did some thinking

Better still, I thought I would try to demonstrate visually what I'm talking about

To that end, I got on YouTube and randomly selected a home and away game from the mid-'80s, this one a Collingwood v Essendon clash at Victoria Park in Round 15 of 1985

It's a 10-minute clip. Watch it and see what you think. If you have the patience, I think two things stand out, and to me they're both pivotal to the current discussion

One is the almost non-stop nature of the action. Far, far fewer stoppages, plenty of space

And players taking the game on. There's not a heap of scoring, but it's still exciting, fast and in my view, the sort of football most people would like to watch

To me, that's an argument for some form of rule change in a game which in recent years is a lot more congested and as a result, slower overall

We know the indicators like contested possession, tackles and stoppages continue to rise or stay around the same mark

They're not being reversed. I just don't think natural evolution is going to take care of the problem

But there's also two important moments in the clip which to me demonstrate the potential problem with rushing through rules on "started positions", "designated areas", "zones", whatever you like to call them

Or, for that matter, extended goalsquares. My problem isn't with the philosophy, but I think the fact that there are simpler, less dramatic changes which could be made to current umpiring guidelines which could actually have a bigger impact on play than the zones being discussed, which, were they to be implemented only at centre bounces, would still occupy only a fraction of game time

So, those two moments? Blink and you'll miss them, but watch particularly for two ball-ups which are called at about the 4:50 mark in the clip, and then again at 6:05

In the first incident, a ground ball is converged upon by just two players, Essendon's Alan Ezard and Collingwood's Gordon Sumner (no, not Sting from The Police)

They wrestle for the ball for no more than one second before umpire Denis Rich blows the whistle, runs in and bounces the ball to restart play

Three other players circling don't even have time to enter the scramble before the whistle blows, play starts again, and the ball is cleared

In the second incident, Essendon's Tim Watson is lucky not to be pinged for holding the ball, but as the ball hits the deck, he manages to dive on it at the same time as Collingwood's Tony Shaw

It's another stalemate, and the ball doesn't come free, but again, within no more than one second, umpire Ian Robinson calls for a ball-up well before any other players can encroach into the area, the game restarts, and we're off and away again

Contrast those two moments with any disputed ball in an AFL game now. A two-man scramble quickly becomes, three, four, half-a-dozen as umpires allow play to continue, the throng often getting so large it really does resemble a rugby union rolling maul

There is the beginning of your congestion. And the continued improvement in players' pressure and tackling skills is such that once it develops, it's proving even harder to break free from

The "bees around the honeypot" disputed ball stuff has been going on so long now we've become conditioned to and not shocked by the spectacle of it

But contrast it with this footage from 1985 and the difference is stark, to say the least

My point here is this. If that cluster of players around the ball is the start of the problem, is there a more effective way of nipping it in the bud than preventing them converging at the contest in the first place? I reckon I first had this debate with then umpires' director Jeff Gieschen around 2005-06

His contention (and I'm not rubbishing him for it) was that umpires' felt that by allowing play to continue, there was a reasonable chance the ball would spill free, and that was preferable to the chance of a secondary stoppage

In short, there was a belief that blowing the whistle for more stoppages would cause more congestion and take more time than allowing the ball to come free naturally

Maybe that was the case in 2005. But it's certainly not now. Imagine if those 1985 standards of when to call for a ball-up were applied in 2018

Look at how quickly umpires Rich and Robinson blow the whistle and restart the game

Would that not have an obvious impact on keeping the game open and keeping it flowing? Surely it would

It's such a simple suggestion and yet we really don't seem to have discussed it much, if at all

There has been talk about the time umpires take to throw the ball up, complicated by indicating the direction in which they're heading once they do throw it up, and of course the silly (in my view) nomination of ruckmen for each contest

Clearly, that has to be dispensed with. But this is more than that. It's not just about how long it takes once the ball-up has been called for, it's about for how long play should unfold before the ball-up is called

And I sincerely believe were that to be reduced dramatically, back to the standards of the mid-80s, we would be a long way towards improving the game's aesthetic

I've always been sceptical about the impact further reductions of the interchange cap would have in opening the game up

And this latest idea of starting points might be OK, but I'm also pretty confident that if it is only at centre bounces, the impact will be minimal, if any

I defy anyone to watch that short 10-minute sample of a run-of-the-mill game from 1985 and conclude it isn't a lot more entertaining as a spectacle than a lot of the football we see now

It's how we get there that obviously is the issue. And if we can a long way towards that goal with a very simple tweak not even of rules, but merely one umpiring interpretation, surely that is preferable to wholesale, fundamental changes to the rules

In summary, I'm saying yes, we do need to do something to get football back to a better place, but no, we don't need to go as far as we appear to be, particularly without sufficient length trials

Can't we at least give this a go first? It could well be the solution that pleases both sides of the current debate, freeing the game up, but at the same time not tampering with its fundamentals

Surely that's worth a try?
