Nerve Agent Destruction in the United States - Duration: 1:56.

>>Narrator: There are two types of nerve agent

stored in the United States, VX and GB, also known as sarin.

In the U.S., nerve agent was first developed following World War II, for use in weapons

such as rockets and projectiles.

However, in 1986, Congress passed a law requiring the destruction of the U.S. chemical weapons

stockpile, rendering nerve agent obsolete.

In its pure liquid state, VX is odorless and clear to amber-colored.

GB is an odorless and colorless liquid.

Both are fast-acting compounds, similar to insecticides, that inhibit or suppress nerves

in the body.

There is one remaining storage location in the United States containing nerve agent.

That stockpile is safely stored and monitored at the Blue Grass Army Depot in Kentucky.

The U.S. previously destroyed nerve agent stockpiles stored at six other locations.

The Assembled Chemical Weapons Alternatives, or ACWA program, will oversee the safe and

environmentally sound destruction of the nerve agent, which is contained in rockets and projectiles.

At the Blue Grass Chemical Agent-Destruction Pilot Plant, the munitions will undergo a

two-step destruction process: neutralization followed by supercritical water oxidation.

The nerve agent will be eliminated, leaving carbon dioxide, water and salts.

Water will be recycled at the plant, and secondary wastes will be transported to a permitted

treatment, storage and disposal facility.
