Hi Metropolis viewers!
My name is Paul Shemisi.
And I welcome you to the city of Kinshasa in Congo.
In the beginning of this year, 10.000 people lost their home to a flood.
Here behind me you see a house that was damaged.
Today we are going to meet Dicap, who also lost his home in the floods.
He found another kind of roof above his head.
Although I wonder how comfortable his solution is.
Like this or like that... Until the morning.
You can also turn this way.
My name is Dicap.
I am a native of the Orientale Province.
That is where I was born and where I grew up.
I settled in the capital and learned to work as a carpenter.
I opened my own workshop and now I manufacture coffins.
I make approximately three coffins a week.
I lost my house when the rain destroyed it in January.
A flood caused damage, the walls of my house collapsed.
The water took everything. I have nothing left.
Where do you live now?
In the workshop with other homeless people.
We all sleep in the workshop.
Nowadays everything has changed.
There are many rich people with bigger workshops making coffins.
My business is not doing well anymore.
Why are you putting that in?
It is to replace the sponge.
Because there are more shops we have less income. And I have to pay the rent.
I also have to pay the workers every day...
and send money to my family and parents who live in the province.
It is not easy to make it... it is hard...
This is where I often eat.
It is the restaurant of a mother who prepares good food.
What are you going to eat today?
I am going to eat chicken.
When there are no deaths, I have to do something else.
I make furniture or I try to work on construction sites..
That is what I do when there are no deaths.
I know how to make furniture and how to paint.
Otherwise I work on construction sites.
I dream to have a house again.
I need a house, but I don not have any opportunities.
I have been sleeping in my workshop for almost four months now.
Because of the flood in January...
Dicap has serious problems to keep his head above the water.
Little work, little money and no place to live and sleep.
But he is not the only one.
And how crazy that may sound, that is also his luck:
Every night other homeless people seek a save place to spend the night.
And for a little money, Dicap offers that place in his coffins.
That way people can sleep, and Dicap can survive.
The coffins are some unusual beds...
and some of them even sting.
But you get used to it.
We miss a place to sleep. There are nails everywhere.
Yes, I see nails inside. That can hurt you.
We know how to sleep without getting hurt. Since the rain, we suffer a lot.
It does not matter. My God, look where we sleep.
It is necessary to find the right position, since the erosion gobbled up my house.
My God, who can help me...
All places are occupied.
What do I do? I have a child with me. We can take one together?
Sleeping in a coffin is not easy. I am going to lie down on the ground.
A little light, please.
I am sleeping near Dicap.
We do not have a choice.
Dear viewers, good night.
Thank you so much for watching.
I hope you will sleep better than I did last night.
Would you sleep in a coffin when you loose your house?
