oh hey Happy Thanksgiving #DadSquad hope you had a great Thanksgiving yesterday
with your family and loved ones I'm sure as I did that you had some serious food
and with it probably some serious calories maybe you're still picking out
your teeth like I am here today but right along with that if you're if
you're looking to be fit you're probably thinking right now gee I need to go do
some serious running to take care of some of those calories and the question
arrives how far do I need to go we're going to talk about that today here on
the run with my son show my name is gideon dave newell and like you i'm a
dad who is determined not to let the headwinds of life push me off the path
to a lifelong heart to heart relationship with my son's and I do that
through something we call #Runversations which are these deliberate
conversations we have while we're out there running it's a great way to
connect it's great way to be fit and as I said today we're going to be talking
about we're going to convert those calories that you ate we're going to
talk about what their values are and what the typical person will need to
actually run in order to offset some of that intake so touchy topic I realize
here let me start off with a question this would be a little bit easier in all
of that meal that you had yesterday here in the United States we celebrated
Thanksgiving maybe you didn't know that but um perhaps you picked out on one
thing tell me what that one thing was was it a veggie Yeah right
was it a dessert was it the macaroni and cheese I'll be talking about that was an
up dog whatever it was go ahead and type it in the comments here share it with us
we'll talk a little bit about what that was like I see we got Barry here this
morning morning Barry we want to talk about what we need to do in order to
offset those calories so whatever it was that you ain't go ahead there's no shame
let us know what it was as we progress here you're gonna find that even though
the most innocent-looking side dish on there actually takes up a little bit of
space on your lauric chart here of what you've
allocated so Thanksgiving is one of those you know once a year things for a
reason and we're gonna get into that all right well without further ado let me
run it for you here we got 13 different foods that have spaced out here oh I do
see this is a bear who's telling us for him it was a veggie blackened Brussels
sprouts yes he then follows up with the fact that he thinks he's boring I don't
know I don't think you're boring we had plenty of those at our table too at the
the Newell family Thanksgiving where we actually joined family we joined the
Davises and yeah black and Brussels sprouts were there they didn't all go I
think there's still some left over so you're welcome to come join us I don't
know if they're last til next Thanksgiving but they're there for me it
actually was the macaroni and cheese it is every single year you know that was
pretty predictable and so that's why I included it on this list here not
knowing if any of you dads eat the macaroni and cheese but because I did I
had to make certain it made the list alright the list anywhere number one the
first and starting item is always going to be Turkey so a 3-ounce modest portion
of Turkey you'd have to run 1.14 miles and if you add that to two ounces of ham
you've already hit a 5k there's another two miles you'll need to run to work off
that baked ham gravy is a great one it's not a meal without half a cup of gravy
right you're going to be putting in some miles for that too and here's what I did
I didn't actually have one cup I had closer to two so that is that's like 10k
worth the macaroni and cheese anyway sweet potato casserole is a
favorite in a lot of households we don't really do it but stuffing now you know
there's a reason why they call it stuffing dads look at that three and a
third mile just for a little bit of stuff right I thought it was gonna be
lower than the potatoes but the potatoes turn out to be more natural food I guess
alright Barry there's your Brussels sprouts so you can pat yourself on the
back and eat it as you want because you're barely going
to keep up with the rest of us kind of distances we're eating
all right butternut squash is one to skip I don't think I've ever tasted a
butternut squash I'm sure they're delicious put brown sugar and butter on
it as six miles six plus miles cranberry sauce I don't
understand that one either I grew up where these are grown on Cape Cod and a
1/4 cup is like a mile green beans you can eat all the green beans you want and
and I will typically I think I need a bunch of those apple pie I also had some
of this it's about the one time of year we do get any pumpkin pie is the same
2.7 miles for either one of those two things but here's the number you're
really looking for the whole meal the whole feast 29 and a half miles so if
you eat the same modest portions that we just outlined for all those different
dishes that's kind of the equivalent of running a marathon plus a 5k which is
like I said pretty nuts so a little bit of disclaimer stuff that I probably
should have jumped into at the top but for our comparisons we and these these
are all perfectly normal ranges that will vary from person to person from man
to woman depending on your body mass index and your age and your fitness
level but we used as a rough number a 10-minute mile pace and for that number
we were getting around 100 calories per mile so that's what you were seeing in
all those food numbers there and my wife dr. Rebecca Newell she reminds me that
it's actually not quite so simplistic you know a mile earned in exercise
doesn't exactly equal you know 100 calories earned in that exercise doesn't
exactly equate to 100 calories that you can then budget and go eat there's some
efficiencies lost having to do with resting metabolism and things that I
didn't understand but I'm not a health expert I just play one on the internet
but yes she's a lot better at than I am so I wanted to make that known too but
if you use that rough number of 100 calories per mile and you're eating that
typical meal you know that maybe that's not typical but I don't
know it's that's a little bit of everything I think everyone's trying to
do least some of everything on Thanksgiving you're easily in the
marathon plus range so the short answer which you already knew you know is to
eat less now you can make an exception you can have a cheat day a once-a-year
Thanksgiving that's what it's for in fact the heart of Thanksgiving and I
hope you spent it the same way we did surrounded by family
you know spending quality individual time trying to talk to each and every
person there and I really connect and make that connection and that's what
we're about here on the run with my son show connecting reconnecting with your
son and we use Fitness if you're watching this video and it hasn't
already passed if Thanksgiving is if you're from the future if you're
watching this video you know months after I upload it first of all do I
still have my hair and second of all do you have an opportunity to be modest and
to cut back and to not fill your plate quite as dramatically as I did so if you
have the opportunity to cut back that's your easy answer your second answer is
to get into a fitness focused lifestyle and to pick up you know I have a new
year's resolution if you will of working you know routine running and exercise or
you know whatever your particular sport is get it on the calendar and make it a
regular thing don't make it a once-a-year thing like Thanksgiving is
and we've got an easy way for you to do that we've talked about in the past up
